The Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
그들에게는 모세와 예언자들이 있으니 그들의 말을 들으면 된다.
오늘은 연중 제26주일입니다. 오늘 성경 말씀의 주제는 하느님의 정의입니다. 그리스도인은 세상 사람들과 다른 새로운 가치관을 가져야 합니다. 그리스도인의 최고의 가치는 하느님이며, 그 절대가치는 예수 그리스도입니다. 하느님은 정의 그 자체이십니다. 참된 정의는 오직 하느님 안에 있습니다.
제1독서는 아모스 예언서의 말씀입니다. 아모스는 주님의 심판이 이방인 민족에게만이 아니라 주님의 선택된 이스라엘 백성에게도 내릴 수 있다고 예언합니다. 아모스 예언자는 헛된 우상을 숭배하고 도둑질을 일삼으면서도 기도하려 성전에 다니는 불의한 자들을 보며 북 이스라엘의 멸망을 예언합니다. 많은 재산을 가지고도 가난한 사람들과 나누지 않은 부자들, 착취를 일삼으면서도 기도하러 성소에 드나드는 자들, 예루살렘 성전만을 믿고 마음 놓고 불의한 일을 저지른 자들, 가난한 사람들을 속이는 장사꾼들을 아모스 예언자는 고발합니다. 주님 안에서 정의롭지 못한 사람들은 주님을 등지고 헛된 우상을 섬겨 결국 멸망하게 될 것입니다.
제2독서는 티모테오 1서의 말씀입니다. 대부분의 사람들은 세상의 보물을 찾고 있지만 그리스도인은 세상 사람들과 다른 새로운 가치관을 가져야 합니다. 재물보다 귀하고 돈보다 가치 있는 것이 있다는 것을 그리스도인은 알아차려야 합니다. 세상 모든 사람들은 세상과 재물을 최고의 가치로 여기지만, 그리스도인은 그보다 더 큰 가치를 알고 세상의 가치보다 더 좋은 가치를 전해야 합니다. 그리스도인의 최고의 가치는 하느님이며, 그 절대가치는 예수 그리스도입니다. 참 그리스도인이 추구해야 할 최고의 절대가치는 바로 예수 그리스도의 삶입니다. 참 그리스도인이 진정 그리스도를 따르는 삶을 살 때 주님의 참된 정의가 그 안에서 드러날 것입니다.
복음은 루카 복음입니다. 부자는 늘 화사하고 값진 옷을 입고 날마다 즐겁고 호화로운 생활을 합니다. 거지 라자로는 그 부자의 식탁에서 떨어지는 부스러기로 주린 배를 채웁니다. 거지는 죽어서 천사들의 인도를 받아 아브라함의 품에 안기게 되고, 부자는 죽어서 죽음의 세계에 떨어집니다. 부자는 죽음의 세계에서 고통을 받다가 아브라함에게 도움을 청합니다. 형제들에게 이 죽음의 세계에 오지 않도록 경고를 부탁합니다. 부자의 형제들에게는 모세와 예언자들의 말씀이 있기 때문에 그 말씀 안에서 살아가면 됩니다. 그러나 주님 말씀 안에 머무르지 않는 사람은 주님의 정의를 믿지 않으며 그래서 주님의 참된 정의의 삶을 살지 않습니다.

해설) 아모스는 우상 숭배하고 도둑질과 착취를 일삼으면서도 기도하러 성소에 다니는 불의한 자들을 보며 북왕국의 멸망을 예언합니다. 아모스 예언자는 주님의 심판이 선택된 민족에게도 내릴 것이라고 예언합니다. 예루살렘 성전만을 믿고 마음 놓고 불의한 일을 저지른 자들에게 이제 곧 주님께서 벌을 내리실 것입니다.
전능하신 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. 1 “불행하여라, 시온에서 걱정 없이 사는 자들, 사마리아 산에서 마음 놓고 사는 자들! 4 그들은 상아 침상 위에 자리 잡고, 안락의자에 비스듬히 누워, 양 떼에서 고른 어린 양을 잡아먹고, 우리에서 가려낸 송아지를 잡아먹는다. 5 수금 소리에 따라 되잖은 노래를 불러 대고, 다윗이나 된 듯이 악기들을 만들어 낸다. 6 대접으로 포도주를 퍼마시고, 최고급 향유를 몸에 바르면서도, 요셉 집안이 망하는 것은 아랑곳하지 않는다. 7 그러므로 이제 그들이 맨 먼저 사로잡혀 끌려가리니, 비스듬히 누운 자들의 흥청거림도 끝장나고 말리라.”

해설) 많은 사람들이 세상과 재물을 최고의 가치로 생각합니다. 대부분의 사람들은 세상의 보물을 찾고 있습니다. 그러나 그리스도인은 새로운 가치관을 지녀야 합니다. 그리스도인은 재물과 돈보다도 더 높은 가치를 알아차려야 합니다. 그리스도인의 최고 가치는 주님이며, 참 그리스도인의 절대가치는 예수 그리스도입니다.
11 하느님의 사람이여, 의로움과 신심과 믿음과 사랑과 인내와 온유를 추구하십시오. 12 믿음을 위하여 훌륭히 싸워 영원한 생명을 차지하십시오. 그대는 많은 증인 앞에서 훌륭하게 신앙을 고백하였을 때에 영원한 생명으로 부르심을 받은 것입니다. 13 만물에게 생명을 주시는 하느님, 그리고 본시오 빌라도 앞에서 훌륭하게 신앙을 고백하신 그리스도 예수님 앞에서 그대에게 지시합니다. 14 우리 주 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때까지 흠 없고 나무랄 데 없이 계명을 지키십시오. 15 제때에 그 일을 이루실 분은, 복되시며 한 분뿐이신 통치자, 임금들의 임금이시며 주님들의 주님이신 분, 16 홀로 불사불멸하시며, 다가갈 수 없는 빛 속에 사시는 분, 어떠한 인간도 뵌 일이 없고, 뵐 수도 없는 분이십니다. 그분께 영예와 영원한 권능이 있기를 빕니다. 아멘.

<너는 좋은 것들을 받았고 라자로는 나쁜 것들을 받았다. 그래서 그는 이제 여기에서 위로를 받고 너는 고초를 겪는 것이다.>
(해설) 부귀영화도 결국 죽고 난 다음에는 아무 소용이 없습니다. 온갖 권력도 주님 앞에서는 아무것도 아닙니다. 부자들은 자신의 풍요로움을 누리고 살기에만 정신이 없습니다. 그러나 가난한 이들은 주님만을 신뢰하고 그분께 기도를 바칩니다. 먹고 마시기만 하고 소외된 사람들과 나누지 않는 사람을 주님께서는 외면하실 것입니다.
그때에 예수님께서 바리사이들에게 말씀하셨다. 19 “어떤 부자가 있었는데, 그는 자주색 옷과 고운 아마포 옷을 입고 날마다 즐겁고 호화롭게 살았다. 20 그의 집 대문 앞에는 라자로라는 가난한 이가 종기투성이 몸으로 누워 있었다. 21 그는 부자의 식탁에서 떨어지는 것으로 배를 채우기를 간절히 바랐다. 그러나 개들까지 와서 그의 종기를 핥곤 하였다. 22 그러다 그 가난한 이가 죽자, 천사들이 그를 아브라함 곁으로 데려갔다. 부자도 죽어 묻혔다. 23 부자가 저승에서 고통을 받으며 눈을 드니, 멀리 아브라함과 그의 곁에 있는 라자로가 보였다. 24 그래서 그가 소리를 질러 말하였다. ‘아브라함 할아버지, 저에게 자비를 베풀어 주십시오. 라자로를 보내시어, 그 손가락 끝에 물을 찍어 제 혀를 식히게 해 주십시오. 제가 이 불길 속에서 고초를 겪고 있습니다.’ 25 그러자 아브라함이 말하였다. ‘얘야, 너는 살아 있는 동안에 좋은 것들을 받았고, 라자로는 나쁜 것들을 받았음을 기억하여라. 그래서 그는 이제 여기에서 위로를 받고, 너는 고초를 겪는 것이다. 26 게다가 우리와 너희 사이에는 큰 구렁이 가로놓여 있어, 여기에서 너희 쪽으로 건너가려 해도 갈 수 없고, 거기에서 우리 쪽으로 건너오려 해도 올 수 없다.’ 27 부자가 말하였다. ‘그렇다면 할아버지, 제발 라자로를 제 아버지 집으로 보내 주십시오. 28 저에게 다섯 형제가 있는데, 라자로가 그들에게 경고하여 그들만은 이 고통스러운 곳에 오지 않게 해 주십시오.’ 29 아브라함이, ‘그들에게는 모세와 예언자들이 있으니, 그들의 말을 들어야 한다.’ 하고 대답하자, 30 부자가 다시 ‘안 됩니다, 아브라함 할아버지! 죽은 이들 가운데에서 누가 가야 그들이 회개할 것입니다.’ 하였다. 31 그에게 아브라함이 이렇게 일렀다. ‘그들이 모세와 예언자들의 말을 듣지 않으면, 죽은 이들 가운데에서 누가 다시 살아나도 믿지 않을 것이다.’”

The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.’ 25 Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. 26 Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’ 27 He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ 30 He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’”
주님께서 부자에게 재산을 많이 주신 것은 그 재산을 어떻게 쓰는지 보시려는 것입니다. 그 재물을 자신의 욕심을 채우는 일에만 쓴다면 그 재물이 오히려 독이 될 것입니다. 재산을 이용해서 주님의 정의를 드러내는 일에 기여해야 합니다. 가난하고 소외된 사람들에 대한 관심과 사랑은 주님께서 가장 반기시는 일입니다.

부자와 라자로의 비유
+ 루카 16,19-31
1. 나는 자비로운 사람입니까? 인색한 사람입니까? 평소에 무시하거나 하찮게 여긴 사람은 없었습니까? 내가 다른 이들에게 자비롭지 못하다면 왜 입니까? 나는 내가 바르게 살고 있는지 어떻게 알 수 있습니까? 내 삶 속에서 나의 잘못을 지적하거나 충고하는 사람은 없었습니까? 그들은 내게 어떤 말들을 해주고 있습니까?
2. 현재 내가 누리고 있는 풍요가 영원히 나와 함께 할 것이라고 생각하지는 않습니까? 죽을 때 죽더라도 나만 잘 먹고 잘살면 된다는 모순된 생각을 하고 있지는 않습니까? 더 많은 것을 갖기 위해 집착한 나머지 다른 사람의 고통이나 불행을 무시하지는 않았습니까? 고통 받던 라자로처럼 내가 무시하던 사람은 주님과 함께 천국에 있고, 나는 불가마속에서 끝도 없는 고통 받고 있다고 상상해보십시오. 이승의 짧은 부귀영화를 위해 영원한 고통과 맞바꿀 수도 있다는 미련한 생각을 하고 있지는 않습니까?

The Rich man and the Lazarus
Through the prophet Amos in the first reading we see the Lord warning the people that they will suffer destruction because of their faith in earthly things and their disloyalty to him – all that they have will be taken from them because of their fickleness. The text focuses on the wealthy who are living a life of pleasure and are unconcerned with the plight of the nation. Because they are wealthy, they will be the first to be punished.
In the second reading from the first letter to Timothy, we see Timothy being encouraged to be faithful to the teaching to which he has dedicated his life so that he may secure for himself eternal life. A previous section in the letter spoke against false prophets whereas, here, Timothy is being encouraged to be a true prophet of Jesus Christ and to live up to the profession of faith he made at his baptism. Like Jesus, Timothy is to be an active witness to the Truth and is not to flinch or compromise.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the Pharisees a story. I stop short of saying “a story about” since that answer depends on one’s perspective. Is this a story about a rich man? Or is this a story about a poor man, Lazarus? Let’s start with the former.
The unnamed rich man in this story is surrounded by every material comfort he could want. Food, drink, clothing. He seemingly wants for nothing. And at his door is Lazarus, a poor man. Hungry, thirsty, sore-ridden. What’s more, the rich man sees him and knows he is deprived of even the most basic human needs. After both men have died, the rich man asks Abraham to “Send Lazarus” to comfort him. He knows by name the man who sat at his door, whom he chose not to help. Abraham has no pity on the rich man.
By contrast, seeing this as the story of the poor man, Lazarus, offers a different perspective. Wanting for even the most basic things, Lazarus seeks not even a meal at the rich man’s table but, rather, the scraps that fall. That dogs lick his sores seems to position these dogs as more caring of Lazarus than the rich man. Lazarus is meek, receives whatever may come his way, and is received into Heaven. So, who is this story about? I submit that this story is not about one or the other. Instead, I read this story as being about each of us.
Each of us may find ourselves as the rich man at certain times in our life and as Lazarus at others. Indeed, at their death the two men in this story switch places and experience one another’s previous state, in a way. In this story as well as others, the question of who is our neighbor – and how we should treat them – is fundamental. The Gospel is clear that we are all neighbors. Once we take ownership of this reality, internalizing it, action must follow. Jesus modeled and preached a way of worshipping God that was far from theoretical and certainly far from comfortable. While we may worship God in many ways, among them must be through our concrete actions in love for one another. Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me. (Mt 25:40)
Let us embrace this calling and embrace all whom we encounter as our neighbor.

카롤루스(Carolus, 또는 가롤로)는 1320년에 프랑스 블루아의 백작인 귀도 드 샤티용의 아들로 태어났고, 1337년에 결혼하였다. 그는 힘이 세고 매우 용감한 사람이었다. 그는 브르타뉴(Bretagne)의 요안나(Joanna)와 결혼했는데, 이 결혼을 미끼로 하여 브르타뉴의 작위를 요구하였으나 거절을 당하자 전쟁을 일으켰다. 그는 자기 휘하의 사병들로 구성된 부대를 진두지휘하다가 낭트(Nantes)에서 포로가 되었다가 풀려났다.
그때부터 그는 가난하고 고통받는 사람들을 위하여 모든 힘을 기울였고, 한적한 곳을 찾아 고독한 생활을 시작하였다. 그는 사실 군인보다는 수도자가 될 사람이었다. 그래서 그는 트레귀엘이 있는 성 이보(Ivo)의 경당까지 맨발로 순례여행을 하였다. 그 후 다시 군인으로 돌아와서 프랑스를 위해 싸우다가 포로가 되었고, 잉글랜드(England)로 호송되었다. 그는 런던탑에 갇혔고, 그의 몸값 또한 엄청났다. 결국 9년 동안 감옥생활을 하다가 석방되었다.
그는 그 동안에 참으로 많은 기도를 하였고 또 인내심을 길렀으므로 아주 비범한 인물로 변하였다. 그 후 그는 어느 들판에서 살해되었는데, 수많은 기적이 일어났다고 한다. 그의 시성에는 반대자들이 많았으나 교황 그레고리우스 11세(Gregorius XI)가 그를 시성하는 칙서를 발표하려다가 아비뇽(Avignon)으로 귀양 가는 와중이라 취소되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 수많은 사람들이 그를 공경하였고, 마침내 1904년에 교황 비오 10세(Pius X)는 그를 복자품에 올려 그에 대한 공경을 승인되었다.
