The Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
너희는 하느님과 재물을 함께 섬길 수 없다.
오늘은 연중 제25주일입니다. 오늘 성경 말씀의 주제는 충실성입니다. 지극히 작은 일에 충실한 사람은 큰일에도 충실하며 지극히 작은 일에 부정직한 사람은 큰일에도 부정직합니다. 인간은 주님과 재물을 동시에 섬길 수 없습니다. 주님께 충실한 사람은 절대로 세상의 재물을 섬기지 않습니다.
제1독서는 아모스서의 말씀입니다. 아모스 예언자는 북부 이스라엘 사람들에게 사회적 불의와 종교적 불의를 고발하고 주님을 대변하여 예언을 합니다. 아모스의 예언은 주님의 심판이 이방인 민족에게만이 아니라 선택된 백성에게도 내릴 수 있다는 것입니다. 많은 재산을 쌓으면서도 가난한 사람들과 나누지 않고 호화로운 집과 별장에 살고 있는 부자들, 도둑질과 착취를 일삼으면서도 기도하러 성소에 드나들고 십일조를 바치고 마음에 위안거리로 자선을 베푸는 자들, 돈 받고 불의한 재판을 하는 재판관들, 거리낌 없이 가난한 사람들을 속여먹는 장사꾼들을 아모스는 고발합니다. 주님께 충실하지 않은 사람은 세상의 작은 일에도 충실하지 못합니다.
제2독서는 티모테오 1서의 말씀입니다. 하느님은 사랑이십니다. 사랑 자체이신 하느님께서는 모든 사람이 구원받기를 원하십니다. 하느님의 구원 계획에 어느 누구도 배제되어 있지 않습니다. 그렇기 때문에 참 그리스도인의 공동체 기도는 세상 모든 사람을 위한 보편적인 기도이어야 합니다. 기도는 하느님에 대한 사랑에서 시작됩니다. 하느님을 사랑하는 사람은 진정 하느님께 기도합니다. 기도하는 사람은 하느님 안에서 내적인 기쁨과 참된 평화를 얻습니다. 예수 그리스도께서도 우리를 위해 기도하십니다. 참 그리스도인은 예수 그리스도를 따라 충실하게 기도해야 합니다. 예수 그리스도 안에서 충실하게 기도하는 사람은 주님을 기쁘게 해드리는 사람입니다.
오늘 복음은 루카 복음입니다. 청지기가 주인의 재산을 낭비한다는 말을 듣고 그 주인은 자기 청지기를 해고합니다. 청지기는 실직 위기에 처한 것입니다. 청지기 직분을 잃은 불의한 청지기는 약삭빠르게 실직 대책을 세웁니다. 청지기의 행위는 부정직하지만 주인은 앞날을 대비한 그의 약삭빠름과 준비성을 칭찬합니다. 우리도 종말에 대비해서 슬기롭게 준비해야 하며 서둘러 회심해야 합니다. 지극히 작은 일에 충실한 사람은 큰일에도 충실하며 지극히 작은 일에 부정직한 사람은 큰일에도 부정직합니다. 세상의 재물을 다스리는데도 충실하지 못하면 주님께서 참 재물을 맡기지 않을 것입니다. 충실한 인간은 주님과 재물을 동시에 섬기지 않습니다.

해설) 아모스 예언자는 불의한 부자들을 고발하고 있습니다. 아모스는 가난한 백성들의 아픔을 열거하며 불의한 장사꾼들과 부정부패에 물든 관리들을 비판합니다. 물질적 풍요로움의 뒤편에는 가난한 자의 고통과 슬픔이 있습니다. 정직하지 못한 상거래가 가난한 사람들의 마음을 아프게 하고 공동체를 좀먹게 합니다.
4 빈곤한 이를 짓밟고 이 땅의 가난한 이를 망하게 하는 자들아 이 말을 들어라! 5 너희는 말한다. “언제면 초하룻날이 지나서 곡식을 내다 팔지? 언제면 안식일이 지나서 밀을 내놓지? 에파는 작게, 세켈은 크게 하고 가짜 저울로 속이자. 6 힘없는 자를 돈으로 사들이고 빈곤한 자를 신 한 켤레 값으로 사들이자. 지스러기 밀도 내다 팔자.” 7 주님께서 야곱의 자만을 두고 맹세하셨다. “나는 그들의 모든 행동을 결코 잊지 않으리라.”

해설) 주님에 대한 사랑의 표현은 기도입니다. 기도는 주님 사랑에서 시작하며 믿음의 표현이기에 기도는 그 자체로 기쁨과 평화를 줍니다. 모든 사람들을 위해서 간구와 기원과 간청과 감사의 기도를 드려야 합니다. 모든 이들을 위한 기도는 주님을 기쁘게 하는 입니다. 기도는 주님과 하나 되게 하고 진정 이웃을 사랑하게 합니다.
사랑하는 그대여, 1 나는 무엇보다도 먼저 모든 사람을 위하여 간청과 기도와 전구와 감사를 드리라고 권고합니다. 2 임금들과 높은 지위에 있는 모든 사람을 위해서도 기도하여, 우리가 아주 신심 깊고 품위 있게, 평온하고 조용한 생활을 할 수 있도록 하십시오. 3 그렇게 하는 것이 우리의 구원자이신 하느님께서 좋아하시고 마음에 들어 하시는 일입니다. 4 하느님께서는 모든 사람이 구원을 받고 진리를 깨닫게 되기를 원하십니다. 5 하느님은 한 분이시고 하느님과 사람 사이의 중개자도 한 분이시니 사람이신 그리스도 예수님이십니다. 6 당신 자신을 모든 사람의 몸값으로 내어 주신 분이십니다. 이것이 제때에 드러난 증거입니다. 7 나는 이 증거의 선포자와 사도로, 다른 민족들에게 믿음과 진리를 가르치는 교사로 임명을 받았습니다. 나는 진실을 말할 뿐, 거짓말을 하지 않습니다. 8 그러므로 나는 남자들이 성을 내거나 말다툼을 하는 일 없이, 어디에서나 거룩한 손을 들어 기도하기를 바랍니다.

(해설) 우리는 주님과 재물을 함께 섬길 수 없습니다. 주님을 섬기는 사람은 재물을 사랑하지 않습니다. 재물을 사랑하는 사람은 주님을 섬기지 않는 사람입니다. 인간은 주님과 재물을 동시에 섬길 수 없습니다. 주님을 진실하게 올바로 섬기고 사랑하는 사람은 주님이 아닌 것들을 절대 섬기지 않습니다.
그때에 1 예수님께서 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. “어떤 부자가 집사를 두었는데, 이 집사가 자기의 재산을 낭비한다는 말을 듣고, 2 그를 불러 말하였다. ‘자네 소문이 들리는데 무슨 소린가? 집사 일을 청산하게. 자네는 더 이상 집사 노릇을 할 수 없네.’ 3 그러자 집사는 속으로 말하였다. ‘주인이 내게서 집사 자리를 빼앗으려고 하니 어떻게 하지? 땅을 파자니 힘에 부치고 빌어먹자니 창피한 노릇이다. 4 옳지, 이렇게 하자. 내가 집사 자리에서 밀려나면 사람들이 나를 저희 집으로 맞아들이게 해야지.’ 5 그래서 그는 주인에게 빚진 사람들을 하나씩 불러 첫 사람에게 물었다. ‘내 주인에게 얼마를 빚졌소?’ 6 그가 ‘기름 백 항아리요.’ 하자, 집사가 그에게 ‘당신의 빚 문서를 받으시오. 그리고 얼른 앉아 쉰이라고 적으시오.’ 하고 말하였다. 7 이어서 다른 사람에게 ‘당신은 얼마를 빚졌소?’ 하고 물었다. 그가 ‘밀 백 섬이오.’ 하자, 집사가 그에게 ‘당신의 빚 문서를 받아 여든이라고 적으시오.’ 하고 말하였다. 8 주인은 그 불의한 집사를 칭찬하였다. 그가 영리하게 대처하였기 때문이다. 사실 이 세상의 자녀들이 저희끼리 거래하는 데에는 빛의 자녀들보다 영리하다. 9 내가 너희에게 말한다. 불의한 재물로 친구들을 만들어라. 그래서 재물이 없어질 때에 그들이 너희를 영원한 거처로 맞아들이게 하여라. 10 아주 작은 일에 성실한 사람은 큰일에도 성실하고, 아주 작은 일에 불의한 사람은 큰일에도 불의하다. 11 그러니 너희가 불의한 재물을 다루는 데에 성실하지 못하면, 누가 너희에게 참된 것을 맡기겠느냐? 12 또 너희가 남의 것을 다루는 데에 성실하지 못하면, 누가 너희에게 너희의 몫을 내주겠느냐? 13 어떠한 종도 두 주인을 섬길 수 없다. 한쪽은 미워하고 다른 쪽은 사랑하며, 한쪽은 떠받들고 다른 쪽은 업신여기게 된다. 너희는 하느님과 재물을 함께 섬길 수 없다.”

To the first he said, 'How much do you owe my master?' 6 He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.' 7 Then to another the steward said, 'And you, how much do you owe?' He replied, 'One hundred kors of wheat.'The steward said to him, 'Here is your promissory note; write one for eighty.' 8 And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently."For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9 I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. 10 The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. 11 If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? 12 If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours? 13 No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon."
자기가 맡은 분야에서 성실하게 오래 일한 사람은 달인이 됩니다. 세상에는 여러 가지 직업이 있으나 귀천을 따질 수는 없습니다. 그러나 주님의 정의와 뜻을 펴는 일이라면 더 큰 의미가 있을 것입니다. 일을 하는 사람의 마음과 노력하는 자세가 중요합니다. 주님께 대한 충실성으로 일을 하면 진정 기쁘고 복된 삶을 살 것입니다.

약은 집사의 비유
+ 루카 16,1-13
1. 나는 '빛의 자녀'입니까? 아니면 '세상의 자녀'입니까? 이 단어는 구체적으로 무엇을 의미합니까? 주님께서 나에게 어떤 소명을 주셨습니까? 나는 주님께서 내게 맡기신 일들을 어떻게 관리하고 또 처리합니까? 나는 주인의 것을 마치도 내 것인 양 함부로 사용하지 않았습니까?
2. 오늘 하루 구체적으로 나는 어떤 것에 최선을 다하고 또 어떤 일에 소홀했습니까? 왜 그것에 소홀했습니까? 나는 주인인 주님께서 돌아오셔서 시비를 따지실 때 까지 기다리고 있을 것이 아니라, 주님 마음에 들 수 있도록 맡겨놓으신 일들을 서둘러 마쳐놓아야 하지 않을까요?

The dishonest manager
In our first reading, the prophet Amos speaks to the people on behalf of God and warns them to be honest and upright in their dealings with people, especially with the poor and those who have no voice, and to protect them from the unscrupulous. He warns against being pious on the one hand and then carrying out sinful deeds on the other, especially at the expense of the vulnerable in society. In all things, God sees everything and will deal with people according to what they have done.
Our gospel passage sees Jesus warning us about the dangers of money and wealth. In the parable, an absentee landlord has been told that his steward was not doing his job properly. The landlord believes the story and is about to sack the steward and so the steward tries to protect his future while also getting even with the landlord. The landlord hears of this, too, and praises the steward which seems rather odd, but it conforms to the idea that in the Kingdom there is no retaliation. Jesus affirms that money is necessary but also says that those who are dishonest when it comes to money will also prove themselves dishonest when it comes to real treasure, which is the Kingdom of God. Money and wealth are important and necessary but they have the ability to corrupt, as is shown in the text. The passage finishes with Jesus reminding the people that, in reality, they can only serve one master and so they have a choice to make: to serve God or to pay lip-service to God while serving the material things of this world. One will lead to eternal life while the other will lead to death.
In the second reading, advice is given to Timothy about the ordering of the Christian community. In the passage, the author says that the community should pray for their fellow men and women through ‘petitions, intercessions and thanksgiving’ so that all people may come to the true knowledge of God and so inherit the Kingdom. These prayers are not confined to those who already believe but extend to all peoples and to those in authority (in his day that would have included the Romans who worshipped their own gods) and, in this way, allow the community to live in peace and to grow. Timothy is reminded that it is the will of God that all people should be saved, which is achieved through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

"Lord, all that I have is a gift from you. May I love you freely and generously with all that I possess. Help me to be a wise and faithful steward of my time, finances, and possessions. May I regard all that I have as yours. Free from greed and possessiveness and fill me with generosity in giving liberally to others, especially those in need, and to the work of the gospel." -Amen
성 엑스수페리오 (Saint Exsuperius)

프랑스 리옹(Lyon)의 주교인 성 에우케리우스(Eucherius)가 동료 주교인 살비우스(Salvius)에게 보낸 편지에 의하면, 막시미아누스 황제 치하에서 테반의 부대는 상부 이집트(Upper Egypt)에서 온 천여 명의 그리스도인으로 구성되어 있었다. 이 부대의 지휘관인 성 마우리티우스(Mauritius)와 많은 동료 군인들은 갈리아 지방에서 일어난 바가우데(Bagaudae)의 반란을 격퇴한 승전 축하연에서 이방신에게 희생제물 드리는 것을 거절했을 뿐 아니라 다른 그리스도인들을 괴롭히라는 명령 또한 거부했다. 거듭 같은 명령이 떨어졌지만 그들은 요지부동이었다. 결국 반란을 두려워한 황제는 일단의 테반 부대원들을 아가우눔(Agaunum, 오늘날 스위스의 생 모리스 Saint-Maurice) 일대에서 전멸시키고 말았다. 이들의 지도자는 성 마우리티우스와 성 엑스수페리우스(또는 엑스수페리오) 그리고 성 칸디두스(Candidus)였다고 한다. 또한 이름이 전해지는 군인 순교자로 성 비탈리스(Vitalis), 성 빅토르(Victor), 성 인노켄티우스(Innocentius) 등이 있다. 후일 전기 작가들은 독일의 쾰른(Koln)에서 이탈리아 북부 파엔차(Faenza)에 이르기까지 무수한 무명의 테반 부대 순교자들이 있었다고 기록하고 있고, 오늘날 생 모르스 앙 발래(Saint-Maurice-en-Valais)에 있는 수도원은 이때 죽은 순교자들을 기념해 건립되었다고 한다. 이들은 보통 아가우눔의 순교자들로 기억되고 있다.
