나는 의인이 아니라 죄인을 부르러 왔다.
12사도의 한 사람. 복음에서 그를 레위라고 부르고 있습니다. 알패오의 아들(마르 2,14)이고, 예수님에게 불림받기 전까지 로마 제국을 위해 세금을 징수하는 카파르나움의 세금 관리원이었으며(마태 9,9), 주님을 따르라는 소명을 받은 후 자기 집에서 예수님을 위해 연회를 베푼 것으로 보아 상당히 부유했던 것 같습니다(루카 5,29). 팔레스티나에서 선교활동을 하였으며 에티오피아·페르시아·파르티아 등에서도 복음을 전했다는 설이 있습니다. 그는 마태오 행록에서 화형·돌에 의한 순교했다고 전해지고 있습니다.

해설) 감옥에 갇혀 있으면서도 바오로는 에페소 신도들이 어떻게 일치하여 지내야 하는지를 설명하며 일치를 호소하고 있습니다. 일치의 기본 원리는 각자가 하느님께서 불러 주신 목적에 합당하게 살아가는 것이며, 겸손과 온유와 인내로써 서로 너그럽게 대하는 것입니다. 그렇게 하면 성령께서는 평화의 끈으로 일치를 이루어 주십니다.
형제 여러분, 1 주님 안에서 수인이 된 내가 여러분에게 권고합니다. 여러분이 받은 부르심에 합당하게 살아가십시오. 2 겸손과 온유를 다하고, 인내심을 가지고 사랑으로 서로 참아 주며, 3 성령께서 평화의 끈으로 이루어 주신 일치를 보존하도록 애쓰십시오. 4 하느님께서 여러분을 부르실 때에 하나의 희망을 주신 것처럼, 그리스도의 몸도 하나이고 성령도 한 분이십니다. 5 주님도 한 분이시고 믿음도 하나이며 세례도 하나이고, 6 만물의 아버지이신 하느님도 한 분이십니다. 그분은 만물 위에, 만물을 통하여, 만물 안에 계십니다. 7 그러나 그리스도께서 나누어 주시는 은혜의 양에 따라, 우리는 저마다 은총을 받았습니다. 11 그분께서 어떤 이들은 사도로, 어떤 이들은 예언자로, 어떤 이들은 복음 선포자로, 어떤 이들은 목자나 교사로 세워 주셨습니다. 12 성도들이 직무를 수행하고 그리스도의 몸을 성장시키는 일을 하도록, 그들을 준비시키시려는 것이었습니다. 13 그리하여 우리가 모두 하느님의 아드님에 대한 믿음과 지식에서 일치를 이루고 성숙한 사람이 되며 그리스도의 충만한 경지에 다다르게 됩니다.

Brothers and sisters: 1 I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, 3 striving to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace: 4 one Body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. 11 And he gave some as Apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ.
묵상) 그리스도의 몸은 하나이고, 성령도 하나이며, 희망도 하나요, 주님도 한 분이며, 믿음도 하나이고, 세례도 하나이며, 만인의 아버지이신 하느님도 한 분이십니다. 우리가 서로 각기 다른 능력을 지닌 것은 하나이신 그리스도의 몸인 교회를 위한 것입니다. 우리는 경쟁 상대가 아니라 서로 협력하고 보완해야 할 친교의 사람들입니다.

< “나를 따라라.” 그러자 마태오는 일어나 예수님을 따랐다. >
해설) 예수님께서 그를 부르실 때 마태오는 세리였습니다. 예수님 당시의 세리는 돈은 많이 벌지만 유다 동족들로부터 멸시받고 따돌림 받는 천한 직업입니다. 그래도 예수님께서는 마태오를 불러 당신 제자로 삼으십니다. 성한 사람에게는 의사가 필요하지 않으나 병자에게는 의사가 필요하기 때문입니다.
그때에 9 예수님께서 길을 가시다가 마태오라는 사람이 세관에 앉아 있는 것을 보시고 말씀하셨다. “나를 따라라.” 그러자 마태오는 일어나 그분을 따랐다. 10 예수님께서 집에서 식탁에 앉게 되셨는데, 마침 많은 세리와 죄인도 와서 예수님과 그분의 제자들과 자리를 함께하였다. 11 그것을 본 바리사이들이 그분의 제자들에게 말하였다. “당신네 스승은 어째서 세리와 죄인들과 함께 음식을 먹는 것이오?” 12 예수님께서 이 말을 들으시고 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “튼튼한 이들에게는 의사가 필요하지 않으나 병든 이들에게는 필요하다. 13 너희는 가서 ‘내가 바라는 것은 희생 제물이 아니라 자비다.’ 하신 말씀이 무슨 뜻인지 배워라. 사실 나는 의인이 아니라 죄인을 부르러 왔다.”

He said to him, "Follow me."And he got up and followed him. 10 While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. 11 The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 12 He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. 13 Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."
묵상) 예수님께서 마태오를 부르시자 그는 즉시 회개하고 주님의 부르심에 기쁘게 응답합니다. 그래서 그는 주님의 제자가 된 것입니다. 예수님께서는 우리 모두를 부르십니다. 우리가 자격이나 능력이 있어서 부르시는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 우리에게 당신의 능력을 주시기 위해서 부르십니다. 부르심에 기쁘게 응답하는 것은 은총입니다.
예수님께서 마태오를 부르십니다. 마태오는 세리이며 죄인입니다. 예수님께서는 그를 통해 큰일을 이루십니다. 주님 사도로서의 자격은 예수님께서 선택하시고 그 사명을 부여하십니다. 우리에게 필요한 것은 응답이며 회개이고 전적인 순명입니다. 주님께서는 당신 사명에 맡는 은총을 함께 주십니다.

마태오를 부르심
+ 마태오 9, 9-13
1. 마태오는 자신의 삶의 자리에서 주님의 부르심을 받았습니다. 나는 나의 삶에서 언제 "나를 따르라"는 주님의 부르심을 받았고, 그때 나의 응답은 어떠하였습니까? 나도 마태오처럼 내 모든 것을 내려놓고 주님을 따라 나설 수 있습니까?
2. 왜 예수님은 사람들이 가까이 하지 않는 부족한 사람들을 찾아가 친구가 되어주십니까? 나의 주변에 있는 세리와 죄인들은 누구입니까? 나도 차별하지 않고 사랑으로 그들과 함께 나눌 수 있습니까?

Jesus calls Matthew
Very little is known about Matthew other than what is recorded in the Gospels and that is that he was a tax-collector who was called by Jesus himself. Matthew is the author of one of the Synoptic Gospels which he wrote in Hebrew as a Jew writing to his fellow Jews. He emphasises the Kingship of Jesus and the Christian belief that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah or Anointed One of the Jewish Faith. Where St Mark focused on the events of the life of Jesus, St Matthew focuses on the Lord’s teachings. Where Matthew preached is unknown and accounts of his martyrdom are unconfirmed.
Our first reading today from the letter to the Ephesians reminds us that, as Christians, we are to live selflessly and with patience. It reminds us that there must be unity among us for there is only one baptism and one God. The second part of the reading speaks of the different gifts which have been given to the baptised by God. Each of us has a role to play in the building up of the Kingdom and the spread of the Good News and each role is specific. First among those are the apostles who gave their lives for the building up of the Kingdom, with St Matthew being today’s example.
The gospel passage tells of the call of Matthew who was a tax collector and therefore an outcast in Jewish society, because he worked for the Roman occupiers. Matthew followed the Lord and later we read that the Lord had dinner with a number of tax collectors and those whom people regarded as sinners, which suggests that Matthew wasn’t the only one to believe in Jesus but that his encounter with Jesus was an occasion to allow his colleagues to meet the Lord. Jesus’ teaching reminds us that God’s ways are not our ways and that sinners too have a right to hear the Good News and so be converted by it. The Lord’s call to ‘Follow me’ doesn’t simply mean that we follow where he walks, but that we must follow by our lifestyle which must imitate his.

"Lord Jesus, our Savior, let us now come to you: Our hearts are cold; Lord, warm them with your selfless love. Our hearts are sinful; cleanse them with your precious blood. Our hearts are weak; strengthen them with your joyous Spirit. Our hearts are empty; fill them with your divine presence. Lord Jesus, our hearts are yours; possess them always and only for yourself.” - Amen.

성 마태오(Matthaeus)는 원래 카파르나움에서 로마 제국을 위해 세금을 걷는 세리였으나, 그리스도의 부르심을 받고 제자가 되었다(마태 9,9-13). 그는 갈릴래아 태생인 듯 하며, 마르코 복음에 의하면 알패오의 아들로 원래 이름은 레위였다(2,13-17). 시몬에게 베드로라는 이름을 주신 것처럼, 레위 역시 예수님으로부터 마태오라는 새 이름을 받은 것으로 보고 있다. 마태오는 '하느님의 선물'이라는 뜻이다. 열두 사도 중의 한 명인 성 마태오는 일찍부터 마태오 복음서의 저자로 알려져 왔다. 그는 70년에 로마 군대에 의해 예루살렘 성이 함락된 후, 80-85년경 시리아의 안티오키아에서 첫 번째 복음서를 집필한 것으로 여겨진다. 그는 특별히 유다교에서 그리스도교로 개종한 동료 유다인들을 위해 복음서를 저술하였다.
전승에 의하면 마태오 사도는 유대 지방을 순회하다가 에티오피아와 페르시아까지 갔고, 그곳에서 복음을 선포하다가 화형 또는 돌에 맞아 순교한 것으로 전해진다. 로마 순교록은 그가 에티오피아에서 순교했다고 기록하고 있다. 그의 유해는 에티오피아에 묻혔다가 10세기경에 이탈리아 남부의 항구도시인 살레르노(Salerno)로 옮겨져 공경을 받고 있다. 4복음서를 동물로 상징할 때 마태오 복음서는 글 쓰는 사람이나 천사의 모습으로 표현되고 있다. 이는 예수님의 족보로 복음서를 시작한 데서 기인한다. 그는 은행원과 장부 기장자, 회계사와 세무 직원들의 수호성인이다. 동방 교회에서는 11월 16일에 그의 축일을 지낸다.
