< 주님께서 여러분의 임금이신데도, “임금이 우리를 다스려야 하겠습니다.” 하고 말하였소(1사무 12,12). >
해설) 판관 시대에는 아직 왕이 없습니다. 이스라엘 백성의 참 지도자는 주님입니다. 이스라엘의 진정한 왕은 오직 주님입니다. 인간이 주님의 백성을 다스릴 수는 없습니다. 오직 주님만이 당신 백성의 왕입니다. 주님께서 주시는 왕의 자리가 아니면 인간이 스스로 왕이 되어서 그 권세를 누릴 수 없습니다.
그 무렵 6 스켐의 모든 지주와 벳 밀로의 온 주민이 모여, 스켐에 있는 기념 기둥 곁 참나무 아래로 가서 아비멜렉을 임금으로 세웠다. 7 사람들이 이 소식을 요탐에게 전하자, 그는 그리짐 산 꼭대기에 가 서서 큰 소리로 이렇게 외쳤다. “스켐의 지주들이여, 내 말을 들으시오. 그래야 하느님께서도 그대들의 말을 들어 주실 것이오. 8 기름을 부어 자기들의 임금을 세우려고, 나무들이 길을 나섰다네. ‘우리 임금이 되어 주오.’ 하고 올리브 나무에게 말하였네. 9 올리브 나무가 그들에게 대답하였네. ‘신들과 사람들을 영광스럽게 하는 이 풍성한 기름을 포기하고, 다른 나무들 위로 가서 흔들거리란 말인가?’10 그래서 그들은 무화과나무에게 ‘그대가 와서 우리 임금이 되어 주오.’ 하였네. 11 무화과나무가 그들에게 대답하였네. ‘이 달콤한 것, 이 맛있는 과일을 포기하고, 다른 나무들 위로 가서 흔들거리란 말인가?’12 그래서 그들은 포도나무에게 ‘그대가 와서 우리 임금이 되어 주오.’ 하였네. 13 포도나무가 그들에게 대답하였네. ‘신들과 사람들을 흥겹게 해 주는 이 포도주를 포기하고, 다른 나무들 위로 가서 흔들거리란 말인가?’14 그래서 모든 나무가 가시나무에게 ‘그대가 와서 우리 임금이 되어 주오.’ 하였네. 15 가시나무가 다른 나무들에게 대답하였네. ‘너희가 진실로 나에게 기름을 부어 나를 너희 임금으로 세우려 한다면, 와서 내 그늘 아래에 몸을 피하여라. 그러지 않으면 이 가시나무에서 불이 터져 나가, 레바논의 향백나무들을 삼켜 버리리라.’”

6 All the citizens of Shechem and all Beth-millo came together and proceeded to make Abimelech king by the terebinth at the memorial pillar in Shechem. 7 When this was reported to him, Jotham went to the top of Mount Gerizim and, standing there, cried out to them in a loud voice: "Hear me, citizens of Shechem, that God may then hear you! 8 Once the trees went to anoint a king over themselves. So they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us.' 9 But the olive tree answered them, 'Must I give up my rich oil, whereby men and gods are honored, and go to wave over the trees?' 10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'Come; you reign over us!' 11 But the fig tree answered them, 'Must I give up my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?' 12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'Come you, and reign over us.' 13 But the vine answered them, 'Must I give up my wine that cheers gods and men, and go to wave over the trees?' 14 Then all the trees said to the buckthorn, 'Come; you reign over us!' 15 But the buckthorn replied to the trees, 'If you wish to anoint me king over you in good faith, come and take refuge in my shadow. Otherwise, let fire come from the buckthorn and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'"
묵상) 정권을 탈취하려는 욕망은 예나 지금이나 한 나라의 불행을 초래하는 엄청난 죄악을 낳습니다. 어떻게 왕이 되는가 하는 것이 중요한 것이 아니라, 각자가 자신의 특성을 키워가며 어떻게 주님을 찬미하는가 하는 것이 중요합니다. 주님의 백성이 진정 자유로워지려면 독재자의 노예가 되는 것을 거부해야 합니다.

< 내가 후하다고 해서 시기하는 것이오? >
해설) 선한 포도밭 주인의 비유는 하느님의 처신을 밝히는 이야기입니다. 우리의 하느님은 공덕에 비례하여 보상하시는 하느님이실 뿐 아니라, 공덕에 상관없이 은혜를 베푸시는 하느님이시기도 합니다. 오후에 한 시간 일한 사람의 품삯을 온종일 뙤약볕 아래서 고생한 일꾼의 품삯과 똑같이 쳐주는 주인처럼 너그러운 하느님입니다.
그때에 예수님께서 제자들에게 이런 비유를 들어 말씀하셨다. 1“하늘 나라는 자기 포도밭에서 일할 일꾼들을 사려고 이른 아침에 집을 나선 밭 임자와 같다. 2 그는 일꾼들과 하루 한 데나리온으로 합의하고 그들을 자기 포도밭으로 보냈다. 3 그가 또 아홉 시쯤에 나가 보니 다른 이들이 하는 일 없이 장터에 서 있었다. 4 그래서 그들에게, ‘당신들도 포도밭으로 가시오. 정당한 삯을 주겠소.’ 하고 말하자, 5 그들이 갔다. 그는 다시 열두 시와 오후 세 시쯤에도 나가서 그와 같이 하였다. 6 그리고 오후 다섯 시쯤에도 나가 보니 또 다른 이들이 서 있었다. 그래서 그들에게 ‘당신들은 왜 온종일 하는 일 없이 여기 서 있소?’ 하고 물으니, 7 그들이 ‘아무도 우리를 사지 않았기 때문입니다.’ 하고 대답하였다. 그러자 그는 ‘당신들도 포도밭으로 가시오.’ 하고 말하였다. 8 저녁때가 되자 포도밭 주인은 자기 관리인에게 말하였다. ‘일꾼들을 불러 맨 나중에 온 이들부터 시작하여 맨 먼저 온 이들에게까지 품삯을 내주시오.’9 그리하여 오후 다섯 시쯤부터 일한 이들이 와서 한 데나리온씩 받았다. 10 그래서 맨 먼저 온 이들은 차례가 되자 자기들은 더 받으려니 생각하였는데, 그들도 한 데나리온씩만 받았다. 11 그것을 받아 들고 그들은 밭 임자에게 투덜거리면서, 12 ‘맨 나중에 온 저자들은 한 시간만 일했는데도, 뙤약볕 아래에서 온종일 고생한 우리와 똑같이 대우하시는군요.’ 하고 말하였다. 13 그러자 그는 그들 가운데 한 사람에게 말하였다. ‘친구여, 내가 당신에게 불의를 저지르는 것이 아니오. 당신은 나와 한 데나리온으로 합의하지 않았소? 14 당신 품삯이나 받아서 돌아가시오. 나는 맨 나중에 온 이 사람에게도 당신에게처럼 품삯을 주고 싶소. 15 내 것을 가지고 내가 하고 싶은 대로 할 수 없다는 말이오? 아니면, 내가 후하다고 해서 시기하는 것이오?’16 이처럼 꼴찌가 첫째 되고 첫째가 꼴찌 될 것이다.”

Jesus told his disciples this parable: 1 "The Kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 Going out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and he said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.' 5 So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o'clock, and did likewise. 6 Going out about five o'clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' 7 They answered, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard.' 8 When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.' 9 When those who had started about five o'clock came, each received the usual daily wage. 10 So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, 12 saying, 'These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat.' 13 He said to one of them in reply, 'My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? 14 Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? 15 Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?' 16 Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last."
묵상) 예수님께서는 율법을 모르거나 지키지 못하는 세리와 죄인들과도 어울려 먹고 마십니다. 바리사이와 율사들은 예수님의 처신을 비난합니다. 예수님의 처신은 하느님의 선한 처신을 본받아 가난하고 소외된 사람들을 끌어안으시며, 바리사이와 율사들도 공덕과 보상만 바라지 말고 이들을 반겨야 한다는 것을 알리십니다.
하느님께서 성모님을 예수님의 어머니로 택하십니다. 하느님의 뜻입니다. 하느님은 우리 모두를 사랑하시며 각자에게 필요한 은총을 베푸십니다. 스스로 생각하는 자신과 하느님께서 보시는 우리의 모습이 다를 수 있습니다. 그러나 성모님처럼 하느님의 말씀에 순종하고 겸손한 마음으로 따른다면 하느님 앞에 첫째로 세우실 것입니다.

선한 포도밭 주인의 비유
+ 마태오 20,1-16
1. 포도밭 주인의 셈에 대해 나는 어떻게 생각합니까? 세상적인 논리로 볼 때 불공평해 보이는 포도밭 주인의 태도는 무엇입니까? 아침부터 하루 종일 일한 일꾼과 한 시간밖에 일하지 않은 일꾼의 삯이 어떻게 같을 수 있습니까?
2. 일꾼들은 각자 다른 시간에 부름을 받습니다. 나는 언제 부름을 받습니까? 나는 정해진 시간 네에서 주님을 위해 얼마나 수고를 하고 있습니까? 하느님은 우리와 같은 셈을 하시는 분이 아니고 '사랑'이라는 잣대로 셈을 하시는데 자주 나는 수고에 대한 보상을 인간적인 방법으로 계산하려하지 않았습니까?

Parable of the landowner and the workers
Giuseppe Sarto was born in north east Italy in 1835 and was ordained priest in 1858. He was made Bishop of Mantua in Lombardy, northern Italy, in 1884 and eight years later was created Cardinal Patriarch of Venice. In 1903 he was elected Pope. During his pontificate he urged daily communion and facilitated the communion of children and the sick. He encouraged Bible reading and tackled Modernism. He died two weeks after the outbreak of World War I in 1914 and was canonized forty years later.
In our first reading we see that the people have proclaimed Abimelech as their king despite the fact that the Lord was their king. In his story about trees, Jotham suggests that Abimelech will not be a good king and that in fact a king is not what the people need at all.
In the Gospel text from St Matthew, we see Jesus using a parable in which a landowner pays all of his servants the same wages though some had worked only an hour while others worked for the full day. The workers are, naturally, unhappy though he paid them according to the agreement he made with each one. The Lord has made an agreement with each one of us which is that if we keep his commandments and live according to the Gospel then we will inherit eternal life. What is important is that we look after ourselves and not be worrying or be nosey about others and what they are doing or not doing as the case may be. The Lord deals with each person individually and while we worship collectively and live as members of one family we must look after ourselves and make sure that we are truly living out the Gospel values.

Lord, I pray that I, too, will be called and that I shall show proper gratitude for what I have been given. Amen.

1835년 6월 2일 이탈리아 북부 베네치아(Venezia)의 리에세(Riese)에서 우체부인 아버지와 재봉사인 어머니 사이의 10남매 중 둘째로 태어난 주세페 멜키오레 사르토(Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto)는 어머니의 신앙에 많은 영향을 받아 1850년에 파도바(Padova)에 있는 신학교에 들어갔다. 1858년 9월 18일 사제가 된 그는 향후 17년 동안 본당 사목자로서 활동하다가 1884년 9월 쇠락한 교구인 만토바(Nantova)의 주교로 임명되어 교구 활성화에 전념했다. 1893년 6월 교황 레오 13세(Leo XIII)는 그를 베네치아의 총대주교 겸 사제급 추기경으로 임명하였다. 베네치아 정부와의 문제로 인하여 18개월 간 부임이 늦춰지기는 했지만 10년 동안 지혜롭게 정부와 협력하며 사회주의에 대항하고 신자들에게 헌신했다.
그는 1903년 8월 4일 교황 레오 13세를 계승하여 교황으로 선출되었다. 그는 교회법 개정에 착수했고, 불가타 성경 개역위원회를 만들었으며, 시편과 성무일도서 개정을 명하였다. 특히 그는 매일 영성체할 것을 명하고, 첫영성체 연령을 낮추고, 병자들의 영성체를 완화해주는 교령을 발표했다. 그의 재임기간은 '근대주의'(Modernism)와의 투쟁이 많았고, 1910년에는 프랑스 좌파 정치 이념에 가톨릭시즘을 조화시키려던 마크 상니에르(Marc Sangier)의 '르 시용'(Le Sillon) 운동을 단죄하였다. 교황 성 비오 10세는 제1차 세계대전이 발발한 지 22일 후인 1914년 8월 20일, 전쟁으로 인해 수많은 사람들이 생명을 잃는 것을 개탄하면서 숨을 거두었다. 생전에 이미 성인으로까지 불렸던 그는 1951년 6월 3일 복자품에 올랐고, 1954년 5월 29일 교황 비오 12세에 의해 시성되었다. 그럼으로써 1712년 비오 5세가 시성된 후 처음으로 시성된 교황이 되었다.
