Monday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time

< 저 혼자서는 이 백성을 안고 갈 수 없습니다. >
해설) 이집트를 탈출한 이스라엘 백성의 광야 생활은 힘듭니다. 광야에서의 굶주림과 목마름은 이집트 노예 생활의 빵과 고기를 그리워하게 합니다. 이집트의 노예 생활을 탈출한 이스라엘 백성은 자유와 해방을 위하여 극복해야만 하는 굳은 의지가 부족하며 고난을 이겨낼 만한 참 신앙도 부족합니다.
그 무렵 이스라엘 자손들이 4 말하였다. “누가 우리에게 고기를 먹여 줄까? 5 우리가 이집트 땅에서 공짜로 먹던 생선이며, 오이와 수박과 부추와 파와 마늘이 생각나는구나. 6 이제 우리 기운은 떨어지는데, 보이는 것은 이 만나뿐, 아무것도 없구나.” 7 만나는 고수 씨앗과 비슷하고 그 빛깔은 브델리움 같았다. 8 백성은 돌아다니며 그것을 거두어서, 맷돌에 갈거나 절구에 빻아 냄비에다 구워 과자를 만들었다. 그 맛은 기름과자 맛과 같았다. 9 밤에 이슬이 진영 위로 내리면, 만나도 함께 내리곤 하였다. 10 모세는 백성이 씨족끼리 저마다 제 천막 어귀에 앉아 우는 소리를 들었다. 주님께서 대단히 진노하셨다. 모세에게도 그것이 언짢았다. 11 그래서 모세가 주님께 여쭈었다. “어찌하여 당신의 이 종을 괴롭히십니까? 어찌하여 제가 당신의 눈 밖에 나서, 이 온 백성을 저에게 짐으로 지우십니까? 12 제가 이 온 백성을 배기라도 하였습니까? 제가 그들을 낳기라도 하였습니까? 그런데 어째서 당신께서는 그들 조상들에게 맹세하신 땅으로, 유모가 젖먹이를 안고 가듯, 그들을 제 품에 안고 가라 하십니까? 13 백성은 울면서 ‘먹을 고기를 우리에게 주시오.’ 하지만, 이 온 백성에게 줄 고기를 제가 어디서 구할 수 있겠습니까? 14 저 혼자서는 이 온 백성을 안고 갈 수 없습니다. 저에게는 너무나 무겁습니다. 15 저에게 이렇게 하셔야겠다면, 제발 저를 죽여주십시오. 제가 당신의 눈에 든다면, 제가 이 불행을 보지 않게 해 주십시오.”

4 The children of Israel lamented, "Would that we had meat for food! 5 We remember the fish we used to eat without cost in Egypt, and the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. 6 But now we are famished; we see nothing before us but this manna." 7 Manna was like coriander seed and had the color of resin. 8 When they had gone about and gathered it up, the people would grind it between millstones or pound it in a mortar, then cook it in a pot and make it into loaves, which tasted like cakes made with oil. 9 At night, when the dew fell upon the camp, the manna also fell. 10 When Moses heard the people, family after family, crying at the entrance of their tents, so that the LORD became very angry, he was grieved. 11 "Why do you treat your servant so badly?" Moses asked the LORD. "Why are you so displeased with me that you burden me with all this people? 12 Was it I who conceived all this people? Or was it I who gave them birth, that you tell me to carry them at my bosom, like a foster father carrying an infant, to the land you have promised under oath to their fathers? 13 Where can I get meat to give to all this people? For they are crying to me, 'Give us meat for our food.' 14 I cannot carry all this people by myself, for they are too heavy for me. 15 If this is the way you will deal with me, then please do me the favor of killing me at once, so that I need no longer face this distress."
묵상) 지도자로서 자신의 한계점을 깨달은 모세는 주님께 하소연합니다. 주님께 드리는 모세의 기도는 마치 아버지께 드리는 아들의 하소연 같습니다. 아버지께 불만을 터뜨리는 말처럼 보이지만 실상은 아버지의 사랑을 확신하며 드리는 기도입니다. 모세는 주님께서 불가능을 가능케 해 주실 수 있는 분으로 확신합니다.

< 예수님께서 하늘을 우러러 찬미를 드리신 다음 빵을 떼어 제자들에게 주시니 제자들이 그것을 군중에게 나누어 주었다. >
해설) 엘리야는 사렙타 과부에게 밀가루와 기름이 떨어지지 않도록 기적을 행하고, 엘리사는 보리떡 스무개로 백 명을 먹이는 기적을 행합니다. 그러나 예수님은 엘리야나 엘리사보다 훨씬 탁월하신 분입니다. 모세가 시나이 광야에서 이스라엘 백성을 만나로 먹인 것처럼 예수님께서도 같은 이스라엘 백성을 기적적으로 먹이십니다.
그때에 세례자 요한의 죽음에 관한 소식을 13 들으신 예수님께서는 배를 타시고 따로 외딴곳으로 물러가셨다. 그러나 여러 고을에서 그 소문을 듣고 군중이 육로로 그분을 따라나섰다. 14 예수님께서는 배에서 내리시어 많은 군중을 보시고 가엾은 마음이 드시어, 그들 가운데에 있는 병자들을 고쳐 주셨다. 15 저녁때가 되자 제자들이 예수님께 다가와 말하였다. “여기는 외딴곳이고 시간도 이미 지났습니다. 그러니 군중을 돌려보내시어, 마을로 가서 스스로 먹을거리를 사게 하십시오.” 16 예수님께서 “그들을 보낼 필요가 없다. 너희가 그들에게 먹을 것을 주어라.” 하고 이르시니, 17 제자들이 “저희는 여기 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리밖에 가진 것이 없습니다.” 하고 말하였다. 18 예수님께서는 “그것들을 이리 가져오너라.” 하시고는, 19 군중에게 풀밭에 자리를 잡으라고 지시하셨다. 그리고 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 손에 들고 하늘을 우러러 찬미를 드리신 다음 빵을 떼어 제자들에게 주시니, 제자들이 그것을 군중에게 나누어 주었다. 20 사람들은 모두 배불리 먹었다. 그리고 남은 조각을 모으니 열두 광주리에 가득 찼다. 21 먹은 사람은 여자들과 아이들 외에 남자만도 오천 명가량이었다.

13 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. 14 When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves." 16 He said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves." 17 But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here." 18 Then he said, "Bring them here to me," 19 and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over–twelve wicker baskets full. 21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.
묵상) 유다인들은 종말에 큰 잔치가 벌어지리라 기대합니다. 오천 명을 먹인 잔치가 종말론적 잔치라면 예수님은 종말론적 인물입니다. 오천 명을 먹인 잔치는 일종의 유다인 식사 예절입니다. 예수님도 최후의 만찬 때에 그렇게 하십니다. 그러니 오천 명을 먹이신 기적은 만찬 예식, 곧 미사의 풍요로움을 밝히는 이야기입니다.
주님께서 이스라엘 백성을 광야에서 만나로 배부르게 하십니다. 예수님께서는 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리로 주님께 감사를 드리고 사람들에게 나누어 주십니다. 그러자 오천 명이 넘는 사람들이 모두 배불리 먹을 수 있습니다. 우리를 살리시는 분은 주님이십니다. 늘 주님께 감사하며 사는 사람은 항상 풍요로울 것입니다.

오천 명을 먹이시다.

1. 왜 군중들은 예수님을 따라갔습니까? 그들은 어떤 모습들이었으며 예수님께서는 어떤 마음으로 그들을 바라보고 계십니까? 나는 왜 예수님을 따라가고 있습니까? 내가 필요한 물질을 청하기 위해서입니까? 아니면 예수님을 통해 진리를 얻고 구원받기 위함입니까? 이런 나의 모습을 바라보고 계신 예수님께서는 내게 무슨 말씀을 하고 계십니까?
2. 쪼개면 쪼갤수록 더 풍성해지는 예수님의 '빵의 기적'을 나는 일상 속에서 언제 발견할 수 있습니까? 내가 다른 이들에게 내어줄 수 있는 것은 무엇입니까? 나는 이미 넘칠 만큼 갖고도 항상 부족하다고 생각하는 이유는 나눔의 삶을 살지 않기 때문은 아닙니까?

First miracles of the loaves
In our first reading from the Book of Numbers we have the account of the people complaining that all they have to eat is manna which they have now grown tired of. The Lord is angry but Moses pleads with him out of fear. We can also sense Moses’ frustration at the constant whining of the people who still prefer their life of servitude under the Egyptians to their life of freedom under God.
In the Gospel we see Jesus feeding the multitude from five loaves and two fish. The people came wishing to listen to him even as he mourned for John the Baptist and they received more than they had expected. Those who turn to the Lord in faith and openness of heart will be fed and strengthened by him for their earthly journey.
Prayer :
"Lord Jesus Christ, you satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts and you feed us with the finest of wheat (Psalm 81:16). Fill me with gratitude for your blessings and give me a generous heart that I may freely share with others what you have given to me." Amen.
성녀 아프라(Saint Afra)

로마 아우크스부르크의 초기 순교자 명단에 성녀 아프라가 나타나지만 역사적인 근거는 희박하고 전설로만 전해온다. 그녀는 디오클레티아누스 황제 치하의 박해 때 그리스도인으로 체포된 매춘부였다고 한다. 감옥에서 그녀는 하느님을 포기하라는 심문에 대하여 “내 몸은 죄를 지었으니 벌을 받아 마땅하나, 내 영혼을 이런 우상으로 파멸시킬 수는 없다”고 대답하여 주위 사람들을 놀라게 하였다고 전한다. 아프라는 사형 언도를 받고 레흐(Lech) 강의 섬에서 화형에 처해졌다. 그녀의 어머니가 시체를 거두어 장례를 치렀다고 전해온다.
