해설) 기근이 온 세상을 휩쓸고 있기에 사람들은 양식을 얻으려고 이집트의 요셉에게 몰려듭니다. 야곱의 아들들도 이집트로 양식을 구걸하러 옵니다. 이집트의 재상 자리에 있는 요셉은 초라하게 구걸하러 온 형들을 알아보고, 그들에게 보복하려는 마음보다 만남의 기쁨이 넘칩니다. 요셉은 의로운 주님의 사람입니다.

그 무렵 55 이집트 온 땅에 기근이 들자, 백성이 파라오에게 빵을 달라고 부르짖었다. 그러자 파라오는 모든 이집트인에게 말하였다. “요셉에게 가서 그가 시키는 대로 하여라.” 56 기근이 온 땅에 퍼지자, 요셉은 곡식 창고를 모두 열고 이집트인들에게 곡식을 팔았다. 이집트 땅에 기근이 심하였지만, 57 온 세상은 요셉에게 곡식을 사려고 이집트로 몰려들었다. 온 세상에 기근이 심하였기 때문이다. 42,5 가나안 땅에도 기근이 들었기 때문에, 이스라엘의 아들들은 이집트로 곡식을 사러 가는 다른 사람들 틈에 끼어 그곳으로 들어갔다. 6 그때 요셉은 그 나라의 통치자였다. 그 나라 모든 백성에게 곡식을 파는 이도 그였다. 그래서 요셉의 형들은 들어와서 얼굴을 땅에 대고 그에게 절하였다. 7 요셉은 형들을 보자 곧 알아보았지만, 짐짓 모르는 체하며 그들에게 매몰차게 말하면서 물었다. “너희는 어디서 왔느냐?” 17 그러고 나서 그들을 사흘 동안 감옥에 가두었다. 18 사흘째 되던 날 요셉이 그들에게 말하였다. “너희가 살려거든 이렇게 하여라. 나도 하느님을 경외하는 사람이다. 19 너희가 정직한 사람들이라면, 너희 형제들 가운데 한 사람만 감옥에 남아 있고, 나머지는 굶고 있는 너희 집 식구들을 위하여 곡식을 가져가거라. 20 그리고 너희 막내아우를 나에게 데려오너라. 그러면 너희 말이 참되다는 것이 밝혀지고, 너희는 죽음을 면할 것이다.” 그들은 그렇게 하기로 하였다. 21 그들이 서로 말하였다. “그래, 우리가 아우의 일로 죗값을 받는 것이 틀림없어. 그 애가 우리에게 살려 달라고 애원할 때, 우리는 그 고통을 보면서도 들어 주지 않았지. 그래서 이제 이런 괴로움이 우리에게 닥친 거야.” 22 그러자 르우벤이 그들에게 말하였다. “그러기에 내가 ‘그 아이에게 잘못을 저지르지 마라.’ 하고 너희에게 말하지 않았더냐? 그런데도 너희는 말을 듣지 않더니, 이제 우리가 그 아이의 피에 대한 책임을 지게 되었다.” 23 그들은 자기들과 요셉 사이에 통역이 서 있었기 때문에, 요셉이 알아듣는 줄을 알지 못하였다. 24 요셉은 그들 앞에서 물러 나와 울었다.

55 When hunger came to be felt throughout the land of Egypt and the people cried to Pharaoh for bread, Pharaoh directed all the Egyptians to go to Joseph and do whatever he told them. 56 When the famine had spread throughout the land, Joseph opened all the cities that had grain and rationed it to the Egyptians, since the famine had gripped the land of Egypt.57 In fact, all the world came to Joseph to obtain rations of grain, for famine had gripped the whole world.42.5 The sons of Israel were among those who came to procure rations. 6 It was Joseph, as governor of the country, who dispensed the rations to all the people. When Joseph's brothers came and knelt down before him with their faces to the ground, 7 he recognized them as soon as he saw them. But Joseph concealed his own identity from them and spoke sternly to them. 17 With that, he locked them up in the guardhouse for three days. 18 On the third day Joseph said to his brothers: "Do this, and you shall live; for I am a God-fearing man. 19 If you have been honest, only one of your brothers need be confined in this prison, while the rest of you may go and take home provisions for your starving families. 20 But you must come back to me with your youngest brother. Your words will thus be verified, and you will not die." To this they agreed. 21 To one another, however, they said: "Alas, we are being punished because of our brother. We saw the anguish of his heart when he pleaded with us, yet we paid no heed; that is why this anguish has now come upon us." 22 Reuben broke in, "Did I not tell you not to do wrong to the boy? But you would not listen! Now comes the reckoning for his blood." 23 The brothers did not know, of course, that Joseph understood what they said, since he spoke with them through an interpreter. 24 But turning away from them, he wept.

묵상) 요셉은 자기를 팔아넘긴 형들이 자기네 잘못을 뉘우치고 있는지를 확인하기 위해 그들을 엄하게 다루고 계속 시련을 겪게 합니다. 요셉은 형들이 회개하여 형제애로 행동하는지 알고 싶어 합니다. 형들로부터 버림받아 노예로 팔려간 요셉이 이제는 형들의 구원자가 된 것입니다. 형들의 속죄하는 대화를 엿들은 요셉은 물러가서 웁니다.

< 이스라엘 집안의 길 잃은 양들에게 가라. >

해설) 마태오 복음 5-7장의 산상 설교에서는 참된 의로움에 대해 밝히고 있고, 10장의 파견 설교에서는 참된 제자상을 밝히고 있으며, 13장의 비유 설교에서는 7가지 비유로 하느님 나라를 밝히고 있고, 18장의 공동체 설교에서는 참된 형제애에 대해, 그리고 24-25장의 심판 설교에서는 하느님 심판에 대해 밝혀 주고 있습니다.

그때에 1 예수님께서 열두 제자를 가까이 부르시고 그들에게 더러운 영들에 대한 권한을 주시어, 그것들을 쫓아내고, 병자와 허약한 이들을 모두 고쳐 주게 하셨다. 2 열두 사도의 이름은 이러하다. 베드로라고 하는 시몬을 비롯하여, 그의 동생 안드레아, 제베대오의 아들 야고보와 그의 동생 요한, 3 필립보와 바르톨로메오, 토마스와 세리 마태오, 알패오의 아들 야고보와 타대오, 4 열혈당원 시몬, 그리고 예수님을 팔아넘긴 유다 이스카리옷이다. 5 예수님께서 이 열두 사람을 보내시며 이렇게 분부하셨다. “다른 민족들에게 가는 길로 가지 말고, 사마리아인들의 고을에도 들어가지 마라. 6 이스라엘 집안의 길 잃은 양들에게 가라. 7 가서 ‘하늘 나라가 가까이 왔다.’ 하고 선포하여라.”

1 Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. 2 The names of the Twelve Apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; 4 Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus. 5 Jesus sent out these Twelve after instructing them thus, "Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, make this proclamation: 'The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.'"

묵상) 예수님께서는 말씀으로 하느님 나라의 기쁜 소식을 전하시고, 당신의 행적으로 하느님 나라가 이미 현재 여기에 와 있음을 알리십니다. 예수님께서는 비유 말씀으로 하느님 나라를 암시하시고, 기적으로 하느님 나라의 구원 능력을 보여 주십니다. 하느님 나라는 예수님을 통해서 이미 시작되고 있으며 당신 제자들에 의해 지속적으로 선포될 것입니다.

예수님께서는 나병환자를 낫게 하시고, 중풍병자를 일으키시고, 소경의 눈을 뜨게 하시고, 벙어리를 말하게 하십니다. 예수님께서는 말씀으로 하느님의 나라를 가르치시고 기적으로 하느님 나라의 능력을 보여 주십니다. 그리고 당신 제자들을 세상에 파견하십니다. 하느님 나라의 기쁜 소식을 전하는 것이 제자인 우리의 사명입니다.

열두 사도를 뽑으시고 파견하시다

+ 마태오 10, 1-7

1. 예수님은 당신을 따르던 사람들 중에서 12명을 뽑아 제자로 삼고 그들을 사도라고 부르십니다. 열 두 제자는 치유의 능력과 불림을 받고 복음을 설교하고 회개를 선포하도록 세상에 파견되었습니다. 제자들은 예수님께서 주신 사명을 어떻게 받아들였습니까?

2. 우리는 하느님의 섭리 안에 각자 다른 소명과 다른 쓰임새로 불림을 받습니다. 나는 삶 안에서 언제 주님의 불림을 받고 보내어짐을 체험할 수 있습니까? 나는 하느님께로 부터 어떤 능력을 받았고 그것을 어떻게 사용하고 있습니까? 나는 이 능력을 나만을 위해 사용하고 있지는 않습니까?

Jesus calls twelve to be his apostles

In our reading from Genesis we now move ahead several years and see Joseph in Egypt as the pharaoh’s main steward. Israel’s sons had sold Joseph into slavery because they were tired of his perfect ways and the fact that their father appeared to love him more than all of them put together. So they sold Joseph as a boy to some traders and Joseph ends up in Egypt where he becomes one of the chief stewards to the Pharaoh. Years later his brothers come to Egypt to buy grain for there is a famine in their own country. They do not recognise Joseph but he recognises them and has them detained for some days.

In our Gospel reading we have the naming of the twelve apostles and these Jesus sends out to proclaim the Good News. What is the kingdom of God? It is that society of men and women who submit to God and who honor him as their King and Lord. In the Lord's prayer we pray for God to reign in our lives and in our world: May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Jesus' preaching of God's kingdom was accompanied by signs and wonders. People were healed not only spiritually, but physically as well. Jesus' words are just as relevant today, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. We cannot buy heaven; but those who know the love and mercy of Jesus already possess heaven in their hearts! Do you believe in the power of God's kingdom? Jesus commissioned his disciples to carry on the works which he did -- to speak God's word and to bring his healing power to the weary and oppressed. In the choice of the twelve apostles we see a characteristic feature of God's work: Jesus chose very ordinary people. They were non- professionals, had no wealth or position. They were chosen from the common people who did ordinary things, had no special education, and no social advantages. Jesus wanted ordinary people who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not think we have nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom. Do you believe that God wants to work through and in you for his glory? We are the successors to the Twelve and it is our duty to proclaim the Good News in all that we do and say.

Prayer "Lord, you have chosen me to be your disciple. Take and use what I can offer, however meager it may seem, for the greater glory of your name." - Amen

성 알렉산데르(Alexander)는 6세기 초 교황 성 심마쿠스(Symmachus, 7월 19일)에 의해 로마 미사경본에 이름이 추가된 순교자에 속한다. 그러나 그의 역사성은 분명하지 않다. 그는 이탈리아 로마의 살라리아(Salaria) 가도에 있는 묘지에 7명의 순교자 중 한 명으로 묻혀 있었다. 이 7명의 순교자들은 안토니우스 피우스 황제 때 이교도의 신상에 희생제물 바치기를 거부하고 순교한 성녀 펠리치타(Felicitas, 11월 23일)의 아들들로 별 근거 없이 주장되었다. 그들은 네 번의 재판을 받고 서로 다른 방법으로 처형되었다. 이 7명의 순교자들의 이름은 성 알렉산데르와 성 비탈리스(Vitalis), 성 마르티알리스(Martialis), 성 야누아리우스(또는 야누아리오), 성 펠릭스(Felix), 성 필리푸스(Philippus) 그리고 성 실바누스(Silvanus)로 전해졌다. 그들은 모두 로마 순교록 7월 10일자에 기록된 진정한 순교자들로 로마에 있는 네 개의 묘지에 묻혀 있다. 그러나 그들 서로간의 그리고 성녀 펠리치타와의 연관은 없다. 이 이야기는 구약성서 마카베오 하권 7장에 나오는 ‘어머니와 일곱 아들의 순교’를 본떠서 인위적으로 각색한 것으로 보인다.
