해설) 안티오키아 공동체는 예루살렘과 유다와 갈릴래아와 사마리아를 포함한 팔레스티나 지역에 복음이 전파된 뒤에 처음으로 팔레스티나 밖에 설립된 헬라계 그리스도교 공동체입니다. 당시 안티오키아는 로마와 알렉산드리아에 이어 로마 제국에서 세 번째로 큰 도시이고 많은 디아스포라 유다인들이 살고 있습니다.
그 무렵 21 많은 수의 사람이 믿고 주님께 돌아섰다. 22 예루살렘에 있는 교회는 그들에 대한 소문을 듣고, 바르나바를 안티오키아로 가라고 보냈다. 23 그곳에 도착한 바르나바는 하느님의 은총이 내린 것을 보고 기뻐하며, 모두 굳센 마음으로 주님께 계속 충실하라고 격려하였다. 24 사실 바르나바는 착한 사람이며 성령과 믿음이 충만한 사람이었다. 그리하여 수많은 사람이 주님께 인도되었다. 25 그 뒤에 바르나바는 사울을 찾으려고 타르수스로 가서, 26 그를 만나 안티오키아로 데려왔다. 그들은 만 일 년 동안 그곳 교회 신자들을 만나며 수많은 사람을 가르쳤다. 이 안티오키아에서 제자들이 처음으로 ‘그리스도인’이라고 불리게 되었다. 13,1 안티오키아 교회에는 예언자들과 교사들이 있었는데, 그들은 바르나바, 니게르라고 하는 시메온, 키레네 사람 루키오스, 헤로데 영주의 어린 시절 친구 마나엔, 그리고 사울이었다. 2 그들이 주님께 예배를 드리며 단식하고 있을 때에 성령께서 이르셨다. “내가 일을 맡기려고 바르나바와 사울을 불렀으니, 나를 위하여 그 일을 하게 그 사람들을 따로 세워라.” 3 그래서 그들은 단식하며 기도한 뒤 그 두 사람에게 안수하고 나서 떠나보냈다.

In those days 21 a great number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The news about them reached the ears of the Church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart, 24 for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. And a large number of people was added to the Lord. 25 Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the Church and taught a large number of people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians. 1 Now there were in the Church at Antioch prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." 3 Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off.
묵상) 예루살렘 모교회는 안티오키아 사람들이 주님의 복음을 믿게 되었다는 소식을 듣고 바르나바를 보냅니다. 바르나바는 타르수스에 있는 바오로를 안티오키아로 데려와서 일 년 동안 함께 안티오키아 그리스도 공동체를 공동 사목합니다. 이때 처음으로 안티오키아 그리스도 신자들이 '그리스도인'이라고 불리게 됩니다.

해설) 하느님 나라는 예수님 설교의 가장 핵심적인 주제입니다. 하느님 나라는 종말에 이르러 하느님 친히 임금님으로서 다스리시는 나라입니다. 하느님 나라는 하느님의 통치입니다. 하느님의 나라는 예수님을 통해서 이미 시작되었고 장차 종말에 이르러 완성될 것입니다. 다가오는 하느님 나라에 대비하는 길은 회개입니다.
그때에 예수님께서 사도들에게 말씀하셨다. 7 “가서 ‘하늘 나라가 가까이 왔다.’ 하고 선포하여라. 8 앓는 이들을 고쳐 주고, 죽은 이들을 일으켜 주어라. 나병 환자들을 깨끗하게 해 주고, 마귀들을 쫓아내어라. 너희가 거저 받았으니 거저 주어라. 9 전대에 금도 은도 구리 돈도 지니지 마라. 10 여행 보따리도 여벌 옷도 신발도 지팡이도 지니지 마라. 일꾼이 자기 먹을 것을 받는 것은 당연하다. 11 어떤 고을이나 마을에 들어가거든, 그곳에서 마땅한 사람을 찾아내어 떠날 때까지 거기에 머물러라. 12 집에 들어가면 그 집에 평화를 빈다고 인사하여라. 13 그 집이 평화를 누리기에 마땅하면 너희의 평화가 그 집에 내리고, 마땅하지 않으면 그 평화가 너희에게 돌아올 것이다.”

The laborer deserves his keep. 11 Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave. 12 As you enter a house, wish it peace. 13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you.
묵상) 예수님의 제자들은 예수님께로부터 치유와 구마 능력을 거저 받았으니 그 능력을 다른 이들에게 거저 주어야 합니다. 예수님께서는 제자들의 선교 여행에 필요한 돈이나 자루, 속옷이나 신발 심지어 지팡이조차도 금지합니다. 선교에 필요한 것들을 포기하는 것은 평화의 자세와 내적 자유를 드러내는 표지입니다.
바르나바는 온 재산을 팔아 사도들을 통해 하느님께 봉헌합니다. 그리고 타르수스에 있는 바오로를 데려와서 함께 이방인들을 위한 전도여행을 합니다. 성령께서는 굳은 믿음을 가진 바르나바를 통하여 많은 사람들을 그리스도인으로 만드십니다. 바르나바는 하느님께로부터 거저 받은 것을 주변 사람들과 함께 나눕니다.

1. 열 두 제자는 예수님에 의해 치유의 능력과 불림을 받고 복음을 설교하고 회개를 선포하도록 보내어졌습니다. 그들은 그것을 어떻게 받아들였습니까? 그렇다면 나는 어떻습니까? 불림을 받고 또 보내어짐을 나는 일상에서 언제 체험할 수 있습니까?

The mission of the twelve
Little is known about Barnabas but, like St Paul, he is always counted as an apostle because he was divinely called to spread the Gospel with Paul. He is the one who was sent to Paul to ‘bring him into Christianity’ after Paul’s vision on the road to Damascus and his baptism by Ananias, and is the one in Acts 4 who sold his land and gave the money to the common fund. He also attended the first council of the Church in Jerusalem with Paul. He is said to have been martyred on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, where he was born.
Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles recounts some of the work done by St Barnabas in spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are introduced to him as an envoy sent from the Church in Jerusalem to Antioch – where a large number have been converted – to ensure that the message is being properly preached. He is pleased with what he finds and encourages the community in its work and belief. He then goes on to look for Paul – who is still called Saul – and brings him to Antioch and eventually to Jerusalem. The faithful were still unsure about Paul, given his reputation, but through the work of Barnabas he is accepted. After a year in Antioch the Holy Spirit makes it known that he has a special task for Barnabas and Paul and so, after prayer and fasting and the laying on of hands, they head off to fulfil their duties.
The gospel passage for today sees Jesus sending out his Apostles and telling them how they should act as they enter each town they come to. This is very much applicable to Barnabas and Paul who spread the Gospel from Palestine to Greece and who brought healing and strength to those whom they met. We are called to be like Barnabas and to give our life to the service of God and the Word knowing that we are building up the Kingdom of God in our time and will be rewarded for our faithfulness. Barnabas is a particularly strong example as he gave up all he had for the sake of the Gospel (he sold his land and gave the money to the needy), he listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit and was guided by it, and he had a concern for the teaching of the true faith (orthodoxy). We are called to follow the Lord’s call and to serve him wherever we find ourselves and in whatever way we can, trusting that he is always with us to guide and protect us.

“Lord, may the joy and truth of the gospel transform my life that I may witness it to those around me. Grant that I may spread your truth and your light wherever I go.” - Amen.

성녀 마리아 로사 몰라스 이 바베(Maria Rosa Molas y Vallve)는 1815년 3월 24일 에스파냐 북동부의 타라고나(Tarragona) 근처 레우스(Reus) 시에서 태어났다. 그녀는 레우스 시에서 작은 상점을 운영하는 매우 경건한 부모 밑에서 성장했다. 그녀가 17살이 되었을 때 어머니가 그 지방에 퍼진 콜레라에 걸려 돌아가셨다. 그녀는 오랫동안 종교적인 성소를 갈망했지만 아버지는 그녀가 집을 떠나는 것을 허락하지 않았다. 그래서 그녀는 아버지 곁에 머물며 가사를 돕다가 26살 때 비로소 병원을 운영하며 가난한 사람들을 돕는 공동체에 입회하였다. 그녀는 종교적인 덕행뿐만 아니라 병들고 도움이 필요한 사람들을 실질적이고 효율적으로 돌보는 데 있어서 탁월한 재능을 보였다.
그녀가 에스파냐 토르토나(Tortona)에서 애덕의 집 책임자로 있을 때 정신적인 병을 앓고 있는 이들이 쓰레기처럼 방치되고 있는 현실에 큰 충격을 받았다. 요양기관에 입원한 300여명의 환자들은 의학적으로 적절하고 적합한 처치를 받지 못했다. 그래서 그녀는 위생체계와 환자들을 돌보는 방법을 현대적으로 개선해 나갔고, 모든 사람들이 공감할 수 있는 요양기관의 질서체계를 확립해 나갔다. 그녀는 질병에 취약한 유아들을 격리 수용하고 의료체계의 표준화와 개선된 간호방식을 만들어 나갔다.
성녀 마리아 로사가 책임자로 있는 8년 동안 이 요양기관은 그 시대의 의학적인 요청들을 하나하나씩 개선해 나갔다. 그러던 중 그녀는 자신이 입회한 공동체가 적법한 방식으로 설립되지 않았음을 알게 되었다. 그래서 그녀와 12명의 동료 수녀들은 관할권을 지닌 지역 주교의 뜻에 자신들을 맡겼고, 지역 주교는 그녀의 헌신과 탁월한 행정능력 그리고 개인적인 성덕을 보고 1857년 위로의 성모 수녀회(Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation)의 설립을 허락하였다. 이 수녀회의 수녀들은 도움이 필요한 사람들이 있는 곳이면 어디든 가지만, 특별히 가난한 지역을 찾아 성녀 마리아 로사의 자비의 사도직을 실천하는 데에 중점을 두고 있다.
성녀 마리아 로사는 자신의 일을 환자들을 돌보는 것에만 제한하지 않았다. 그녀는 분쟁 중에 있는 이들의 중재자로도 활약했다. 1843년 레우스 시를 둘러싸고 양측 군대가 치열한 전투를 벌이고 있을 때 협상을 위해 전선 한가운데를 지나가며 휴전을 이끌어내기도 했다. 그녀는 1876년 6월 11일 토르토나에서 선종하였다.
그녀는 1977년 교황 복자 바오로 6세(Paulus VI)에 의해 시복되었고, 1988년 12월 11일 로마의 성 베드로 대성당에서 교황 성 요한 바오로 2세(Joannes Paulus II)에 의해 성인품에 올랐다. 많은 사람들로부터 ‘자비의 사도’로 불리는 그녀는 자신의 직무를 실용적이며 누구나 공감할 수 있는 방식으로 수행한 사도로서 평가받고 있다. 그녀는 마리아 로사 돌로리부스 몰라스 이 바베(Maria Rosa Doloribus Molas y Vallve)로도 불린다.
