The Ascension of the Lord
너희는 이 일의 증인이다
오늘은 주님 승천 대축일입니다. 주님의 승천은 예수 그리스도의 지상 생애의 완결이며 초대 교회 공동체의 새로운 시작입니다. 예수 그리스도의 부활과 승천은 같은 사건의 새로운 신학적 이해입니다. 예수 그리스도의 승천으로 예수님의 지상적 삶은 마감하고 성령께서 이끄시는 새로운 그리스도 공동체의 시대가 시작됩니다.
제1독서는 사도행전입니다. 예수 그리스도께서는 당신의 말씀으로 하느님 나라를 가르치시고 당신의 행적으로 하느님 나라의 위력을 드러내 보이셨습니다. 예수 그리스도께서는 하느님 나라와 하느님의 구원 계획을 밝히셨습니다. 때가 되어 예수님께서는 고난을 받으시고 죽으시고 묻히셨으며 다시 일으켜지신 후에 여러 가지 증거로써 당신이 살아 계시다는 것을 드러내셨습니다. 사십일 동안 제자들에게 나타나셔서 하느님 나라에 관한 일들을 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 당신의 성령을 제자들에게 약속하시고 그들이 보는 가운데서 하늘 위로 올라가십니다. 하느님으로부터 오신 분이 다시 하느님께로 가신 것입니다. 하느님이신 분이 다시 하느님이 되신 것입니다. 주님의 승천은 부활의 또 다른 면입니다.
제2독서는 에페소서입니다. 하느님께서는 예수 그리스도 안에서 당신의 능력을 드러내셔서 그분을 죽은 이들 가운데서 일으키시고 하늘에서 당신 오른 편에 앉히십니다. 하느님께서는 그리스도 예수님을 모든 권력과 권세와 능력과 주권 위에 앉히십니다. 하느님께서는 그분을 현세에서 뿐만이 아니라 내세에서도 불려지는 온갖 이름 위에 군림하게 하십니다. 그리고 만물을 그리스도의 발아래에 굴복시키시고 그리스도 예수님을 만물 위에 교회의 머리로 삼으십니다. 그리스도 교회는 바로 그리스도의 몸이며 만물 안에서 만물을 충만케 하는 그리스도의 충만함입니다. 참된 충만은 오직 예수 그리스도 안에 있습니다. 만물을 완성하시는 하느님의 구원 계획이 진정 예수 그리스도 안에서 완전히 이루어집니다.
복음은 루카 복음으로 주님 승천을 보여 주고 있습니다. 루카 복음은 승천으로 끝을 맺고 있으며 사도행전은 승천으로 시작됩니다. 예수 그리스도의 승천은 하느님 구원 계획의 완결이며 동시에 새로운 시작입니다. 주님의 승천은 예수님에 대한 하느님의 영광과 승리를 뜻합니다. 주님의 승천은 부활하신 예수 그리스도의 성령에 의한 그리스도 교회 공동체의 시작을 알리는 신호입니다. 예수 그리스도는 고난을 겪고 사흘 만에 죽은 이들 가운데서 다시 살아나시며 예루살렘으로부터 시작하여 모든 민족들에게 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 죄를 용서하기 위한 회개가 선포 된다는 것을 주님의 제자는 알려야 합니다. 예수님께서는 승천하시면서 당신의 죽음과 부활을 널리 알리라는 복음 선포의 사명을 주십니다.

해설) 예수님의 승천으로 예수님의 지상 시대가 끝나고 그리스도 공동체의 시대가 열립니다. 예수님의 승천은 교회 시대가 막을 내리게 될 예수님 재림을 예시하는 사건입니다. 그런데 예수님께서 재림하실 종말은 임박하지 않았으며, 그래서 종말 이전까지 그리스도 공동체의 역사가 계속될 것입니다.
1 테오필로스 님, 첫 번째 책에서 저는 예수님의 행적과 가르침을 처음부터 다 다루었습니다. 2 예수님께서 당신이 뽑으신 사도들에게 성령을 통하여 분부를 내리시고 나서 승천하신 날까지의 일을 다 다루었습니다. 3 그분께서는 수난을 받으신 뒤, 당신이 살아 계신 분이심을 여러 가지 증거로 사도들에게 드러내셨습니다. 그러면서 사십 일 동안 그들에게 여러 번 나타나시어, 하느님 나라에 관한 말씀을 해 주셨습니다. 4 예수님께서는 사도들과 함께 계실 때에 그들에게 명령하셨습니다. “예루살렘을 떠나지 말고, 나에게서 들은 대로 아버지께서 약속하신 분을 기다려라. 5 요한은 물로 세례를 주었지만 너희는 며칠 뒤에 성령으로 세례를 받을 것이다.” 6 사도들이 함께 모여 있을 때에 예수님께 물었다. “주님, 지금이 주님께서 이스라엘에 다시 나라를 일으키실 때입니까?” 7 그러자 예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “그 때와 시기는 아버지께서 당신의 권한으로 정하셨으니 너희가 알 바 아니다. 8 그러나 성령께서 너희에게 내리시면 너희는 힘을 받아, 예루살렘과 온 유다와 사마리아, 그리고 땅끝에 이르기까지 나의 증인이 될 것이다.” 9 예수님께서는 이렇게 이르신 다음 그들이 보는 앞에서 하늘로 오르셨는데, 구름에 감싸여 그들의 시야에서 사라지셨다. 10 예수님께서 올라가시는 동안 그들이 하늘을 유심히 바라보는데, 갑자기 흰옷을 입은 두 사람이 그들 곁에 서서, 11 이렇게 말하였다. “갈릴래아 사람들아, 왜 하늘을 쳐다보며 서 있느냐? 너희를 떠나 승천하신 저 예수님께서는, 너희가 보는 앞에서 하늘로 올라가신 모습 그대로 다시 오실 것이다.”

1 In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up, 2 after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for "the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; 5 for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 6 When they had gathered together they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He answered them, "It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9 When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. 10 While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, 11 suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven."

해설) 예수님께서 갈릴래아에서 시작하여 하느님 나라를 선포하셨으나, 이제는 사도들이 예루살렘에서 시작하여 땅 끝에 이르기까지 예수님의 구원 사건을 선포할 것입니다. 사도들은 모든 민족에게 선포할 것입니다. 사도들은 예수님의 죽음과 부활의 증인들입니다. 예수님께서는 모든 권한을 사도들에게 맡기고 그리고 하늘로 올라가십니다.

빛을 가두어 둘 수 없듯이 참 기쁨도 감출 수 없습니다. 그 넘치는 기쁨과 그분의 사랑을 우리도 전해야 합니다. 그 찬란한 빛으로 온 세상을 환히 비추어야 합니다. 빛이신 주 예수님께서 하늘에 오르시니 예수님을 믿고 따르는 우리도 하늘에 오를 수 있으리라는 희망의 기쁜 소식을 온 세상에 널리 전해야 합니다.

1. 예수님께서는 제자들과 작별을 하시며 예수님의 행적과 말씀을 증거하는 증인으로 살라고 말씀하시며 아버지께서 약속하신 협조자 성령을 보내시겠다는 약속을 하십니다. 그리스도의 이름으로 죄를 용서하기 위한 회개가 선포된다는 기쁜 소식을 세상에 알리라는 사명을 남기고 하늘로 승천하시는 예수님을 바라보는 제자들의 모습을 떠올려 보십시오. 그들은 무엇을 느꼈을까요?
2. 나는 예수님의 제자입니다. 나는 세상에서 예수님께서 말씀하신 그 모든 일의 증인으로 어떻게 살며 그분의 말씀에 어떻게 응답하고 있습니까? 세상에 선포해야할 기쁜 소식을 전하는데 무엇이 나를 어렵게 합니까? 나의 게으름입니까? 아니면 세상에 대한 두려움입니까? 성령께 도움을 청해보십시오.

The Ascension
The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles tells us of the Ascension of Jesus when he was taken up into heaven in the sight of his followers. The text begins with Luke reminding Theophilus about Jesus Christ and his work and how he died and rose from the dead. He recounts how he met with his followers for forty days after this and how, as he was speaking to them, he was taken up to heaven and not seen by them again. Those who were with him at that moment continued to look into heaven because they had not realized what had actually taken place and had to be brought back to reality by two angels who told them that the Lord had returned to heaven. But before departing from them the Lord told them that they would receive the Holy Spirit and that this would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world.
The second reading from Ephesians tells us that Jesus Christ, now he has ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God and that everything is now subject to him. The reading is in the form of a prayer that the Holy Spirit will come to guide the people so that they can see the glory of God and his plan for his people. It is also a reminder that even though Christ has ascended to heaven he has a body here on earth in the form of the Church and so all those who believe in him are part of that body.In the alternative second reading, the Hebrews are reminded that when Christ ascended he went straight to heaven and not to anything human. He went to heaven to be in the presence of God where he would intercede on behalf of his followers. The author also tells them that because Christ had sacrificed himself there would be no need for any other sacrifice for sin and wrong-doing because Christ’s sacrifice wipes away all sin and is eternal. This means that the sins of the people are also removed once and for all and so the sanctuary (heaven) is open to them too because this is the promise made by Jesus Christ, and he is always faithful.
Our gospel reading gives St Luke’s second account of the ascension in which Jesus Christ promises the disciples the Holy Spirit who will lead and strengthen them. As soon as he has blessed them he is taken from them for ever and at that moment the disciples worship him – the only time Luke records that the disciples worship Jesus and this is a highlight because finally they understand who he really is. The gospel ends with the early followers of Jesus worshipping in the Temple where the gospel began and from where the disciples will carry the forgiveness of sins across the world. It is our Christian hope that as Christ has ascended into heaven, we too will follow him and will join him in the Kingdom. But we can only do this if we remain faithful to his teaching handed on through the Apostles and if we are open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

"Lord Jesus, through the gift of your Holy Spirit, you fill us with an indomitable spirit of praise and joy which no earthly trial can subdue. Fill me with your resurrection joy and help me to live a life of praise and thanksgiving for your glory. May I witness to those around me the joy of the gospel and the reality of your resurrection.” - Amen.

성 니콜라우스 페레그리누스(Nicolaus Peregrinus, 또는 니콜라오 페레그리노)의 생애는 거의 알려지지 않고 있다. 분명한 것은 그가 열심하고 단순한 마음을 지닌 그리스 사람이며, 이탈리아에서 이방인처럼 방랑생활을 했다는 것이다. 얼마 동안은 이탈리아 남동부 오트란토(Otranto)에 정착했지만, 곧 아폴리아 전역을 방랑하다가 병이 들어 트라니(Trani)에서 선종하였다. 그는 어디를 가든지 ‘키리에 엘레이손’(주님, 자비를 베푸소서)을 외치며 다녔다. 그는 가끔 사과나 혹은 어린이들이 좋아할 물건들을 들고 다니면서 아이들이 모이면 함께 찬미가를 노래했다. 또 가끔은 미친 사람으로 몰려 곤욕을 치루기도 했으나 그의 죽음을 계기로 하여 그의 높은 덕이 세상에 알려졌다고 한다. 그의 무덤은 치유의 기적으로 지금도 순례자들이 자주 찾는 곳이다. 성 니콜라우스 순례자 또는 성 니콜라우스 펠레그리누스(Nicolaus Pellegrinus, 또는 니콜라오 펠레그리노)로도 불리는 그는 1098년 교황 우르바누스 2세(Urbanus II)에 의해 시성되었다.
