평화가 너희와 함께
오늘은 부활 제2주일입니다. 오늘 독서와 복음의 주제는 자비입니다. 하느님께서 초대교회 공동체에 많은 자비를 베풀어 주셔서 주님을 믿는 신자들의 수효가 날로 늘어납니다. 하느님께서 자비를 베푸셔서 사람들이 예수는 그리스도이시며 하느님의 아들이심을 믿고 또 그렇게 믿어서 주님의 이름으로 참 생명을 얻도록 하십니다.
제1독서는 사도행전 5장의 말씀입니다. 초대 교회 공동체는 사도들의 직접적인 가르침을 듣습니다. 사도들은 예수님과 함께 지내며 말씀하시고 행하신 것들과 수난 받으시고 죽으시고 묻히시고 부활하신 것들을 신자들에게 가르칩니다. 초대 교회 공동체는 형제적 친교의 나눔과 일치의 삶을 삽니다. 초대 교회의 형제적 친교의 삶은 부활을 사는 삶입니다. 또한 초대 교회 공동체는 빵을 떼어 나누는 성찬의 전례를 하며 기도하는 공동체입니다. 이렇게 그리스도를 따르는 삶을 살자 공동체 안에서 놀라운 기적과 표징이 일어나며 많은 이들이 호감을 가집니다. 하느님께서 초대 교회 공동체에 많은 자비를 베푸셔서 주님을 믿는 신도들의 수효가 날로 늘어납니다.
제2독서는 요한 묵시록의 말씀입니다. 자비로우신 하느님께서는 과거에 활동하신 것처럼 현재 그리스도 공동체 안에서 활동하시며 미래에도 활동하실 것입니다. 진실한 증인이시며 죽음으로부터 제일 먼저 살아나신 분이시며 땅 위의 모든 왕들의 지배자이신 예수님께서 우리를 사랑하신 나머지 당신의 피로써 우리를 죄에서 해방시켜 주시고 우리로 하여금 한 왕국을 이루게 하시고 하느님을 섬기는 사제가 되게 하십니다. 예수님은 하느님 자비와 하느님 활동의 중심입니다. 모든 영광과 권세는 주 예수님께 속합니다. 예수님은 진정 역사의 주님이시며 생명의 주님이십니다. 일곱 통의 편지는 전체 교회를 상징하며 예수님께서는 말씀을 통하여 교회 안에 현존하여 계십니다.
오늘 복음은 요한복음입니다. 안식일 다음날 저녁에 제자들은 두려움에 떨며 문을 모두 닫아걸고 있는데 예수님께서 들어오셔서 평화의 인사를 하십니다. 그러고 나서 당신의 못 자국 난 손과 발과 옆구리를 보여 주십니다. 제자들은 주님을 뵙고 기뻐합니다. 그러나 토마 사도는 그 자리에 없습니다. 토마 사도는 눈으로 못 자국을 보고 그 못 자국에 직접 손가락을 넣어 보아야만 주님의 부활을 믿겠다고 합니다. 주님의 부활을 보지 않고도 믿는 사람은 진정 복된 사람입니다. 하느님의 자비와 축복을 받은 사람들에게 예수님께서 평화의 선물을 주십니다. 그리스도의 평화 안에 화해와 일치가 있습니다. 부활하신 예수님께서 주시는 평화 안에 진정 하느님의 자비가 있습니다.

해설) 초대 그리스도 공동체의 특징은 사도들의 가르침을 직접 받으며, 서로 형제적 친교를 맺고, 빵을 떼어 나누는 성찬의 전례를 행하며, 기도하는 공동체입니다. 그러자 많은 이들이 호감을 가지고 그래서 교회 공동체 안에서 많은 놀라운 기적과 표징이 있으며, 공동체의 아름다운 모습을 보고 많은 이들이 입교하게 됩니다.
12 사도들의 손을 통하여 백성 가운데에서 많은 표징과 이적이 일어났다. 그들은 모두 한마음으로 솔로몬 주랑에 모이곤 하였다. 13 다른 사람들은 아무도 감히 그들 가운데에 끼어들지 못하였다. 백성은 그들을 존경하여, 14 주님을 믿는 남녀 신자들의 무리가 더욱더 늘어났다. 15 그리하여 사람들은 병자들을 한길까지 데려다가 침상이나 들것에 눕혀 놓고, 베드로가 지나갈 때에 그의 그림자만이라도 누구에겐가 드리워지기를 바랐다. 16 예루살렘 주변의 여러 고을에서도 많은 사람들이 병자들과 또 더러운 영에게 시달리는 이들을 데리고 몰려들었는데, 그들도 모두 병이 나았다.

Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon's portico. None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them. Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men and women, were added to them. Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them. A large number of people from the towns in the vicinity of Jerusalem also gathered, bringing the sick and those disturbed by unclean spirits, and they were all cured.

해설) 예수님은 하느님 계획의 중심입니다. 모든 영광과 권세는 예수님께 속합니다. 그리스도 신자들은 그리스도를 증거 하다가 박해를 받지만 부활하신 주님의 승리에 이미 참여하고 있기 때문에 그래서 환난과 고통 중에도 예수님을 믿고 증거 해야 합니다. 예수 그리스도는 영원무궁토록 살아 계시며 진정 우리를 살리시는 분입니다.
9 여러분의 형제로서, 예수님 안에서 여러분과 더불어 환난을 겪고 그분의 나라에 같이 참여하며 함께 인내하는 나 요한은, 하느님의 말씀과 예수님에 대한 증언 때문에 파트모스라는 섬에서 지내고 있었습니다. 10 어느 주일에 나는 성령께 사로잡혀 내 뒤에서 나팔 소리처럼 울리는 큰 목소리를 들었습니다. 11 그 목소리가 이렇게 말하였습니다. “네가 보는 것을 책에 기록하여 아시아에 있는 일곱 교회에 보내라.” 12 나는 나에게 말하는 것이 누구의 목소리인지 보려고 돌아섰습니다. 돌아서서 보니 황금 등잔대가 일곱 개 있고, 13 그 등잔대 한가운데에 사람의 아들 같은 분이 계셨습니다. 그분께서는 발까지 내려오는 긴 옷을 입고 가슴에는 금 띠를 두르고 계셨습니다. 17 나는 그분을 뵙고, 죽은 사람처럼 그분 발 앞에 엎드렸습니다. 그러자 그분께서 나에게 오른손을 얹고 말씀하셨습니다. “두려워하지 마라. 나는 처음이며 마지막이고 18 살아 있는 자다. 나는 죽었었지만, 보라, 영원무궁토록 살아 있다. 나는 죽음과 저승의 열쇠를 쥐고 있다. 19 그러므로 네가 본 것과 지금 일어나는 일들과 그다음에 일어날 일들을 기록하여라.”.

해설) 평화는 부활하신 예수님의 가장 큰 선물입니다. 세상의 생명을 위해 바친 예수님의 죽음으로 시작된 화해가 그리스도의 평화 안에 있습니다. 그리스도의 평화는 십자가에 못 박힌 예수님이 고통을 통해 성취하신 평화이며, 고통과 죽음을 통해 예수님이 처음으로 성취해 낸 평화입니다. 이 평화는 예수님의 희생으로부터 오는 평화입니다.
19 그날 곧 주간 첫날 저녁이 되자, 제자들은 유다인들이 두려워 문을 모두 잠가 놓고 있었다. 그런데 예수님께서 오시어 가운데에 서시며, “평화가 너희와 함께!” 하고 그들에게 말씀하셨다. 20 이렇게 말씀하시고 나서 당신의 두 손과 옆구리를 그들에게 보여 주셨다. 제자들은 주님을 뵙고 기뻐하였다. 21 예수님께서 다시 그들에게 이르셨다. “평화가 너희와 함께! 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것처럼 나도 너희를 보낸다.” 22 이렇게 이르시고 나서 그들에게 숨을 불어넣으며 말씀하셨다. “성령을 받아라. 23 너희가 누구의 죄든지 용서해 주면 그가 용서를 받을 것이고, 그대로 두면 그대로 남아 있을 것이다.” 24 열두 제자 가운데 하나로서 ‘쌍둥이’라고 불리는 토마스는 예수님께서 오셨을 때에 그들과 함께 있지 않았다. 25 그래서 다른 제자들이 그에게 “우리는 주님을 뵈었소.” 하고 말하였다. 그러나 토마스는 그들에게, “ 나는 그분의 손에 있는 못 자국을 직접 보고 그 못 자국에 내 손가락을 넣어 보고 또 그분 옆구리에 내 손을 넣어 보지 않고는 결코 믿지 못하겠소.” 하고 말하였다. 26 여드레 뒤에 제자들이 다시 집 안에 모여 있었는데 토마스도 그들과 함께 있었다. 문이 다 잠겨 있었는데도 예수님께서 오시어 가운데에 서시며, “평화가 너희와 함께!” 하고 말씀하셨다. 27 그러고 나서 토마스에게 이르셨다. “ 네 손가락을 여기 대 보고 내 손을 보아라. 네 손을 뻗어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보아라. 그리고 의심을 버리고 믿어라.” 28 토마스가 예수님께 대답하였다. “ 저의 주님, 저의 하느님!” 29 그러자 예수님께서 토마스에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 나를 보고서야 믿느냐? 보지 않고도 믿는 사람은 행복하다.” 30 예수님께서는 이 책에 기록되지 않은 다른 많은 표징도 제자들 앞에서 일으키셨다. 31 이것들을 기록한 목적은 예수님께서 메시아시며 하느님의 아드님이심을 여러분이 믿고, 또 그렇게 믿어서 그분의 이름으로 생명을 얻게 하려는 것이다.

주님께서 돌아가신 후 그들의 마음은 혼돈스러워 문을 닫아걸고 무서움에 떨고 있습니다. 부활하신 예수님께서 제일 먼저 제자들에게 주신 것은 그리스도의 평화입니다. 부활하신 예수님에 대한 확신이 없는 사람들에게 주님께서는 성령을 부어주시고 믿음을 주십니다. 예수님을 만난 사람은 주님께서 주시는 참 평화를 누릴 것입니다.

1. 제자들은 무엇이 두려워 문을 걸고 숨어 있었습니까? 예수님께서 그들에게 찾아와 "평화가 너희와 함께!" 말씀하셨을 때 그들의 반응은 어떠하였습니까? 예수님을 목격한 제자들은 토마스에게 어떤 말을 해주었으며 토마스는 왜 그들의 말을 불신합니까? 다른 제자들이 예수님과 만나고 있던 그 시각에 토마스는 어디서 무엇을 하고 있었을까요?
2. 나도 사람들과 세상이 두려워 마음의 문을 닫은 채 단절된 삶을 살고 있지 않습니까? 내가 두려워하는 것은 무엇입니까? 나의 믿음은 어떻습니까? 살면서 불안하고 자주 넘어지는 이유가 약한 믿음 때문은 아닙니까? 예수님을 직접 만나 꼭 눈으로 확인하고 만져보고 싶어 했던 토마스의 모습이 바로 나의 모습이 아닐까요? "평화가 너와 함께!" 라며 말씀하시는 예수님을 느껴 보십시오. 주님께서 말씀하시는 '평화'의 의미는 무엇입니까? 확고한 믿음을 위해 필요한 것은 무엇입니까?

Jesus appears to the disciples
In our first reading today we see that the apostles have continued to preach about Jesus Christ and his resurrection. They gather as a group at one of the entrances to the Temple in Jerusalem and people gather in such a way that they are in the path of the disciples. The disciples have worked signs and miracles just as Jesus did and people believe in the power they have. The mention of ‘the shadow of Peter’ reminds us of the woman with the haemorrhage who believed that in simply touching the Lord’s cloak she would be healed. The people are reluctant to join the group of believers but still hold them in high regard and seek favors from them. All that the apostles do is done in the name of Jesus and it is Christ who grants healing through their actions and words.
Our second reading comes from the opening chapter of St John’s Revelations in which John tells us that he has been imprisoned on the island of Patmos for having preached the word of God. During this imprisonment, John had a vision from God which takes place on the Lord’s Day, a Sunday, and the trumpet sound suggests that what is taking place is a theophany, a sacred meeting with God. In the vision, John comes face to face with Jesus who confirms that he had indeed died, but that he now lives forever. John is instructed to write down the full vision so that it may be passed on to others, that it may strengthen the faith of believers.
In our gospel, we see Jesus appearing to the disciples where they have locked themselves away for fear of the Jews. This is on Easter Day and is a continuation of the text of Easter Sunday. He stands among them and shows them his body and his wounds, answering the question from last week – ‘Where is he? Where is his body?’ He gives them his Spirit and sends them out to preach and to forgive in his name. This act of preaching and forgiveness is linked to receiving the Holy Spirit and is something which every Christian should practice in their lives because we have all received the Holy Spirit, most notably at Confirmation. Of particular importance to us is the absence of St Thomas. When the others told him that Jesus had appeared he refused to believe and only believed when Jesus appeared eight days later, on which occasion he receives something of a reprimand from the Lord for demanding a sign before believing. Thomas represents all of us who find the idea of resurrection difficult to grasp while the reading reminds us that the first apostles were also slow to come to full belief. Thomas also represents us when he makes his great declaration of faith – ‘My Lord and my God!’ – which is the high point of the gospel. This is the declaration which we too must make if we are to inherit eternal life through the Lord’s resurrection.

"Lord Jesus Christ, through your victory over sin and death you have overcome all the powers of darkness. Help me to draw near to you and to trust in your life-giving word. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and strengthen my faith in your promises and my hope in the power of your resurrection." - Amen.

프랑스 벨리(Belley) 근교 퀴에(Cuet)의 가난한 농부 집안에서 출생한 성 베드로 샤넬(Petrus Chanel)은 어린 시절을 목동으로 지내다가 16세 때 멕시미외(Meximieux) 소신학교에 입학하여 수학한 후 부르(Bourg) 대신학교에 들어가 1827년 7월 15일 사제로 서품되었다. 그는 1년 뒤 제네바 근처에 있는 암베리외(Amberieux) 대목구로 파견되어 여건이 불충분한 본당에서 3년 동안 본당신부로 있었으며, 1831년 콜랭(J.-C.M. Colin)이 외방선교를 위해 리옹(Lyon)에 설립한 마리아 선교 수도회에 입회하였으며, 그 후 5년 동안 벨리 신학교의 교수로 봉직하였다.
1836년 그는 남태평양의 뉴헤브리디스(New Hebrides)의 선교사로 파견되어 타이티 서쪽에 위치한 푸투나 섬에서 약간의 성공을 거두긴 하였으나, 추장의 반대를 무릅쓰고 그의 아들에게 세례를 주려다가 주민들로부터 살해당하였다. 샤넬은 1889년 11월 17일 교황 레오 13세(Leo XIII)에 의해 복자품에 올랐으며, 1954년 6월 12일에 교황 비오 12세(Pius XII)에 의하여 시성되었다. 그는 마리아 선교 수도회의 첫 순교자이자 오세아니아의 첫번째 순교자로서 오세아니아의 수호성인이다.
