The Fourth Sunday of Lent – Laetare Sunday
내가 잃었다가 도로 찾았다.
오늘은 사순 제4주일입니다. 오늘 성경 말씀의 주제는 새로움입니다. 광야에서 정화된 이스라엘은 모두 할례를 받고 새롭게 되어 약속의 땅에서 파스카 축제를 지냅니다. 아버지를 등지고 먼 곳으로 떠났던 작은 아들은 인생의 밑바닥에서 새로워져서 아버지께로 돌아옵니다. 누구든지 그리스도를 믿으면 새사람이 됩니다.
제1독서는 여호수아기의 말씀입니다. 출애굽의 백성은 약속의 땅에 들어가기까지 사십 년간 광야 생활을 합니다. 출애굽의 백성은 홍해바다를 건너면서 모두 할례를 받았지만 하느님께서 약속하신 땅에 들어가기까지 사십 년간 광야 생활 중에 태어난 광야의 백성은 아무도 할례를 받지 않았습니다. 광야 생활 도중에 할례 받을 기회가 없었던 것입니다. 이스라엘 백성의 할례는 하느님 백성 공동체의 표지입니다. 약속의 땅을 앞두고 이스라엘 공동체는 모두 길갈에서 할례를 받고 새로운 몸가짐과 마음가짐을 가집니다. 그리고 예리코 평야에서 첫 번째 파스카 축제를 지냅니다. 그들은 그 해에 그 땅의 소출을 먹습니다. 새로워진 이스라엘 백성은 주님께서 약속하신 땅으로 들어갑니다.
제2독서는 코린토 2서의 말씀입니다. 하느님께서는 예수 그리스도를 통하여 우리를 당신과 화해하게 해 주시고, 또 사람들을 하느님과 화해시키는 임무를 우리에게 주십니다. 하느님께서는 우리의 죄를 묻지 않으시고 예수 그리스도를 내세워 우리 인간과 화해하십니다. 하느님께서는 죄를 모르시는 그리스도를 우리를 위해 죄 있는 분으로 여기십니다. 그래서 우리는 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하느님으로부터 무죄 선언을 받게 됩니다. 낡은 것은 사라지고 새로운 것이 나타납니다. 우리의 외적 인간은 낡아지지만 내적 인간은 나날이 새로워지고 있습니다. 누구든지 그리스도를 알면 새롭게 변합니다. 누구든지 그리스도를 믿으면 새사람이 됩니다.
오늘 복음은 루카 복음입니다. 작은 아들은 자기에게 돌아올 유산을 미리 달라고 아버지에게 청합니다. 아버지의 유산을 받은 작은 아들은 자기 재산을 다 거두어가지고 먼 고장으로 떠나갑니다. 아버지를 등지고 먼 곳으로 떠나 방탕한 생활을 한 작은 아들은 결국 알거지가 됩니다. 그제야 제정신이든 작은 아들은 아버지께로 돌아옵니다. 아버지를 등지고 먼 곳으로 떠난 작은 아들은 인생의 밑바닥에서 새로워져서 아버지께로 되돌아옵니다. 아버지는 새롭게 변한 작은 아들에게 좋은 옷을 입히고 가락지를 끼우고 신을 신겨주고 살진 송아지를 잡고 잔치를 벌입니다. 죽었던 아들이 다시 살아왔고, 잃었던 아들을 다시 찾았고, 어리석은 아들이 새로워졌기 때문입니다.

< 하느님의 백성은 약속된 땅에 들어가서 파스카 축제를 지냈다. >
해설) 출애굽의 백성은 홍해를 건너면서 할례를 받았지만 광야에서 난 백성은 아무도 할례를 받지 않았습니다. 광야 생활 중에 할례 받을 기회가 없었던 것입니다. 할례는 하느님 백성에 속함을 나타내 주는 표지입니다. 주님의 계획을 받아들인 새 세대의 새로운 집단은 길갈에서 할례를 받습니다. 예리코 벌판의 파스카 축제로 광야의 시대는 끝이 납니다.
그 무렵 9 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 오늘 너희에게서 이집트의 수치를 치워 버렸다.” 10 이스라엘 자손들은 길갈에 진을 치고, 그달 열나흗날 저녁에 예리코 벌판에서 파스카 축제를 지냈다. 11 파스카 축제 다음 날 그들은 그 땅의 소출을 먹었다. 바로 그날에 그들은 누룩 없는 빵과 볶은 밀을 먹은 것이다. 12 그들이 그 땅의 소출을 먹은 다음 날 만나가 멎었다. 그리고 더 이상은 이스라엘 자손들에게 만나가 내리지 않았다. 그들은 그해에 가나안 땅에서 난 것을 먹었다.

9 The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.” 10 While the Israelites were encamped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they celebrated the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth of the month. 11 On the day after the Passover, they ate of the produce of the land in the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain. On that same day 12 after the Passover, on which they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased. No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.

< 하느님께서는 그리스도를 통하여 우리를 당신과 화해하게 하셨습니다. >
해설) 하느님께서는 그리스도를 통하여 인간과 화해하십니다. 예수님께서는 당신의 화해와 용서를 우리도 할 수 있게 하십니다. 성령께서 함께 하시면 우리도 성령의 도움으로 용서하고 화해할 수 있습니다. 누구든지 예수님을 믿으면 성령이 함께하고, 누구든지 예수님을 믿으면 변화되고, 누구든지 예수님을 믿으면 새사람이 됩니다.

< 너의 아우는 죽었다가 다시 살아났다. >
해설) 아버지를 떠난 작은 아들은 돼지를 치는 가장 천한 일을 합니다. 작은 아들은 가장 낮은 곳에서 주님을 체험하게 되고 그래서 변화되어 아버지에게로 되돌아가야 하겠다고 마음먹습니다. 주님은 낮은 곳에 계시며 가난한 사람, 상처 입은 사람, 한 맺힌 사람, 소외된 사람과 함께 하십니다. 가장 낮은 곳에 주님은 계십니다.
그때에 1 세리들과 죄인들이 모두 예수님의 말씀을 들으려고 가까이 모여들고 있었다. 2 그러자 바리사이들과 율법 학자들이, “저 사람은 죄인들을 받아들이고 또 그들과 함께 음식을 먹는군.” 하고 투덜거렸다. 3 예수님께서 그들에게 이 비유를 말씀하셨다. 11 “어떤 사람에게 아들이 둘 있었다. 12 그런데 작은아들이, ‘아버지, 재산 가운데에서 저에게 돌아올 몫을 주십시오.’ 하고 아버지에게 말하였다. 그래서 아버지는 아들들에게 가산을 나누어 주었다. 13 며칠 뒤에 작은아들은 자기 것을 모두 챙겨서 먼 고장으로 떠났다. 그러고는 그곳에서 방종한 생활을 하며 자기 재산을 허비하였다. 14 모든 것을 탕진하였을 즈음 그 고장에 심한 기근이 들어, 그가 곤궁에 허덕이기 시작하였다. 15 그래서 그 고장 주민을 찾아가서 매달렸다. 그 주민은 그를 자기 소유의 들로 보내어 돼지를 치게 하였다. 16 그는 돼지들이 먹는 열매 꼬투리로라도 배를 채우기를 간절히 바랐지만, 아무도 주지 않았다. 17 그제야 제정신이 든 그는 이렇게 말하였다. ‘내 아버지의 그 많은 품팔이꾼들은 먹을 것이 남아도는데, 나는 여기에서 굶어 죽는구나. 18 일어나 아버지께 가서 이렇게 말씀드려야지. ′아버지, 제가 하늘과 아버지께 죄를 지었습니다. 19 저는 아버지의 아들이라고 불릴 자격이 없습니다. 저를 아버지의 품팔이꾼 가운데 하나로 삼아 주십시오.′’ 20 그리하여 그는 일어나 아버지에게로 갔다. 그가 아직도 멀리 떨어져 있을 때에 아버지가 그를 보고 가엾은 마음이 들었다. 그리고 달려가 아들의 목을 껴안고 입을 맞추었다. 21 아들이 아버지에게 말하였다. ‘아버지, 제가 하늘과 아버지께 죄를 지었습니다. 저는 아버지의 아들이라고 불릴 자격이 없습니다.’ 22 그러나 아버지는 종들에게 일렀다. ‘어서 가장 좋은 옷을 가져다 입히고 손에 반지를 끼우고 발에 신발을 신겨 주어라. 23 그리고 살진 송아지를 끌어다가 잡아라. 먹고 즐기자. 24 나의 이 아들은 죽었다가 다시 살아났고 내가 잃었다가 도로 찾았다.’ 그리하여 그들은 즐거운 잔치를 벌이기 시작하였다. 25 그때에 큰아들은 들에 나가 있었다. 그가 집에 가까이 이르러 노래하며 춤추는 소리를 들었다. 26 그래서 하인 하나를 불러 무슨 일이냐고 묻자, 27 하인이 그에게 말하였다. ‘아우님이 오셨습니다. 아우님이 몸성히 돌아오셨다고 하여 아버님이 살진 송아지를 잡으셨습니다.’ 28 큰아들은 화가 나서 들어가려고도 하지 않았다. 그래서 아버지가 나와 그를 타이르자, 29 그가 아버지에게 대답하였다. ‘보십시오, 저는 여러 해 동안 종처럼 아버지를 섬기며 아버지의 명을 한 번도 어기지 않았습니다. 이러한 저에게 아버지는 친구들과 즐기라고 염소 한 마리 주신 적이 없습니다. 30 그런데 창녀들과 어울려 아버지의 가산을 들어먹은 저 아들이 오니까, 살진 송아지를 잡아 주시는군요.’ 31 그러자 아버지가 그에게 일렀다. ‘얘야, 너는 늘 나와 함께 있고 내 것이 다 네 것이다. 32 너의 저 아우는 죽었다가 다시 살아났고 내가 잃었다가 되찾았다. 그러니 즐기고 기뻐해야 한다.’”

1 Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, 2 but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 So to them Jesus addressed this parable: 11 “A man had two sons, 12 and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them. 13 After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. 14 When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. 15 So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. 16 And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. 17 Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. 18 I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’ 20 So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. 21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.’ 22 But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, 24 because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began. 25 Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. 26 He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. 27 The servant said to him, ‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ 28 He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 He said to his father in reply, ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. 30 But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’ 31 He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. 32 But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’”
하느님을 등진 인간이 하느님께로 돌아서는 것이 회심입니다. 그러나 하느님께 반역하고 하느님을 등지고 가다가 다시 그분께로 되돌아서는 것은 참으로 어렵습니다. 그나마 남은 양심이 죄인으로 주님 앞에 서는 것을 어렵게 합니다. 은총만이 '하느님은 사랑'이심을 깨닫게 할 것이며, 은총만이 마지막 돌아올 곳이 주님 품인 줄도 알게 할 것입니다.

되찾은 아들의 비유
+ 루카 15, 1-3. 11ㄴ-32
1. 나도 하느님께 무엇인지도 잘 모르면서 나의 몫을 내어달라고 청하지는 않았습니까? 나는 하느님께로부터 받아 누리고 있는 모든 것에 감사하지 않으면서 마치 나의 능력으로 얻은 것인 양 함부로 사용하며 살아가고 있지는 않습니까?
2. 아들의 회심 과정과 그가 돌아와 기쁜 아버지가 잔치를 여는 장면을 떠 올려봅시다. 나는 이 장면에서 지금 어디에 서있습니까? 돌아온 동생을 맞는 아버지처럼 기쁜 마음으로 그를 맞습니까? 아니면 복음에 나오는 큰 아들처럼 나의 불만을 표출하며 내가 현재 누리고 있는 것에 대해 부족해하거나 못마땅해 하고 있지는 않습니까?

Parable of lost & found
Today is referred to as ‘Laetare Sunday’ which is a call to be joyful. It is a reminder during this season of repentance that there is much to be joyful for. That is brought out in the readings for today where we are told that God is merciful, that he forgives our sins and that he will welcome us back with open arms.
In our first reading we see that the Israelites have arrived in the Promised Land which they entered with Joshua at their head, following the death of Moses. The Exodus journey has now come to an end and they celebrate the Passover for the first time in their new home where they also feed on the produce of the land itself, and so no longer receive the manna which sustained them for the last forty years. The Lord has fulfilled his promise to his Chosen People and removed the shame of slavery from them.
In the second reading St Paul writes to the people of Corinth about the reconciliation which has been won by Jesus Christ. Not alone have they been reconciled with God through Jesus Christ through the forgiveness of sins but they are now ambassadors of that reconciliation – they have a duty and responsibility as baptised Christians to bring that reconciliation to those whom they meet, beginning at home and then going out into the workplace. As ambassadors they don’t simply represent Jesus Christ but they prolong his visible presence in the world.
In our gospel for today we have the story of the Prodigal Son, a story which reminds us of the great love of the Father for his people even when they stray from his love. The younger son had essentially insulted his father by asking for his inheritance before the father died. He then went and squandered it and took up Gentile ways. By contrast to his rebellious younger brother, the older son was almost childishly obedient to his father as his comments at the end of the story show. The younger son has placed himself at the mercy of his father who receives him back and dresses him as a free man, while the dutiful son refuses to accept him as his brother and refuses to acknowledge that repentance and conversion are possible. The story is a powerful reminder that the Lord is always waiting for us to return and is happy to welcome us back. Yet at the same time we can continue to place ourselves outside of the banquet hall by continuing in our judgemental and selfish ways because God will not force his love on any of us – we must choose it for ourselves.
Prayer :
"Lord, let your light dispel the darkness that what is lost may be found and restored. Let your light shine through me that others may see your truth and love and find hope and peace in you. May I never doubt your love nor take for granted the mercy you have shown to me. Fill me with your transforming love that I may be merciful as you are merciful." Amen.

보나벤투라 토르니엘리(Bonaventura Tornielli)는 포를리 출신으로 훌륭한 가문에서 성장하였다. 그는 아마도 37세 때에 성모의 종 수도자가 된 듯하다. 그 후 사제가 된 그는 놀라운 설교 덕분으로 일약 유명한 수도자로 존경을 받게 되었다. 그는 교황 식스투스 4세(Sixtus IV)의 위임을 받은 선교사로 활약하였는데, 특히 이탈리아 토스카나(Toscana)와 베네치아(Venezia)에서는 수많은 귀족들을 개종시켰다. 1488년 말경에 그는 성모의 종 수도회 총장으로 선출되었음에도 불구하고 선교활동은 계속하였다.
