성 티모테오와 성 티토 주교
리체니아에서 태어난 티모테오는 바오로 사도의 제자로서 전도 여행을 충실히 도왔습니다. 그는 바오로 사도의 협력자요 절친한 친구로서 테살로니카서, 코린토 후서, 필리피서, 콜로새서, 필레몬서의 전달자입니다. 그는 에페소 교회를 지도했습니다. 티토는 사도 바오로의 제자로서 새로운 교회를 조직하고, 불화를 해소시키기 위해 바오로 사도에 의해 협상 주도자로 파견되기도 했으며 크레타 교회를 지도했습니다.

해설) 바오로 사도는 감옥에 갇혀 순교를 준비하면서도 흔들림 없이 주님께 감사를 드립니다. 바오로는 감옥에 있으면서 에페소 교회의 책임을 맡은 젊은 지도자 티모테오에게 편지를 씁니다. 바오로 사도는 티모테오에게 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 부끄러워하지 말고 복음을 더 온전히 선포하라고 권고합니다.
1 하느님의 뜻에 따라, 또 그리스도 예수님 안에 있는 생명의 약속에 따라 그리스도 예수님의 사도가 된 바오로가, 2 사랑하는 아들 티모테오에게 인사합니다. 하느님 아버지와 우리 주 그리스도 예수님에게서 은총과 자비와 평화가 내리기를 빕니다. 3 나는 밤낮으로 기도할 때마다 끊임없이 그대를 생각하면서, 내가 조상들과 마찬가지로 깨끗한 양심으로 섬기는 하느님께 감사를 드립니다. 4 나는 그대의 눈물을 생각하면서 그대를 다시 볼 수 있기를 간절히 바랍니다. 그렇게 된다면 내가 기쁨으로 가득 찰 것입니다. 5 나는 그대 안에 있는 진실한 믿음을 기억합니다. 먼저 그대의 할머니 로이스와 어머니 에우니케에게 깃들어 있던 그 믿음이, 이제는 그대에게도 깃들어 있다고 확신합니다. 6 그러한 까닭에 나는 그대에게 상기시킵니다. 내 안수로 그대가 받은 하느님의 은사를 다시 불태우십시오. 7 하느님께서는 우리에게 비겁함의 영을 주신 것이 아니라, 힘과 사랑과 절제의 영을 주셨습니다. 8 그러므로 그대는 우리 주님을 위하여 증언하는 것을 부끄러워하지 말고, 그분 때문에 수인이 된 나를 부끄러워하지 마십시오. 오히려 하느님의 힘에 의지하여 복음을 위한 고난에 동참하십시오.

해설) 하느님의 일꾼은 오직 하느님 말씀을 전하는 일에만 마음을 모아야 합니다. 하느님 말씀을 전하는 선교에 나설 때는 돈주머니도 식량자루도 신도 지니지 말아야 하며, 누구와 인사하느라 가던 길을 멈추지도 말아야 합니다. 그리스도의 참 제자는 오직 그리스도의 복음 말씀을 전하는 일에만 마음을 써야 합니다.

묵상) 선한 사람은 항상 선한 것에 마음을 쓰고 그래서 선한 것을 선택합니다. 악한 사람은 늘 악한 것에 마음을 기울이고 그래서 악한 일을 합니다. 하느님 나라의 기쁜 소식이 선포됩니다. 이 기쁜 소식을 받아들인 사람은 항상 기쁨 안에 살 것입니다. 그러나 하느님의 기쁜 소식을 받아들이지 않는 사람은 늘 어둠 속에 살게 될 것입니다.
예수님께서 복음 선포를 위해 제자들을 보내실 때 그들에게 당신의 능력을 부어주십니다. 바오로 사도는 티모테오와 티토에게 복음 사명을 주고 격려합니다. 바오로의 안수로 그들은 예수님의 힘을 받습니다. 복음을 선포할 때 우리의 능력으로 하려면 되지 않을 것입니다. 성령의 도우심으로만 하느님 나라는 선포될 것입니다.

일흔두 제자를 파견하시다
+ 루카 10,1-9
1. 주님은 지금 나를 어디로 파견하고 계십니까? 그리고 내가 세상에서 추수해야 할 것들은 무엇입니까? 나는 세상에다 하늘나라를 어떻게 선포할 수 있습니까? 복음을 전하는데 어떤 두려움을 느낍니까? 무엇이 나를 두렵게 합니까?
2. 빈손으로 떠난 다는 의미를 묵상해 보십시오. 예수님은 길을 떠날 때 왜 아무것도 지니고 가지 말라고 하십니까? 모든 것은 주님께서 마련하시므로 내가 좀 더 주님께 집중할 수 있도록, 세속적인 것들을 모두 내려놓고 가라는 의미가 아닐까요? 주님께서 알려주시는 전교의 자세와 나의 자세의 차이점에 대해 생각해보고 고쳐야 할 부분은 없는지 살펴보십시오.

Seventy-two sent
Very little is known about these two saints who were companions and disciples of St Paul who is said to have written three letters to them and which are part of the canon of sacred scripture. Timothy was made bishop of Ephesus (in western Turkey) while still very young and is said to have been beaten and stoned to death in 97 AD for fighting against heathen worship. Titus was made bishop of Crete in the Mediterranean though he still went on missions for Paul from time to time but always returned to Crete where he eventually died.
In our first reading today from the second letter to Timothy, we see the author describe Timothy as someone who was sincere in the faith, and he traces the faith in Timothy’s family. The author is writing to him to encourage him to work to increase his faith, to ‘fan into a flame the gift which God gave’ him. That gift was something powerful with which to spread the faith and may at times have to endure hardship for the sake of the Good News.
In the alternative reading from his letter to Titus, we see the author saying that St Paul himself (in whose name he writes the letter) had been commissioned by God to spread the Good News, a message which contains the assurance of eternal life promised by God. In his turn, Paul commissioned Titus to organise the new religion on the island of Crete. The Psalm is a reminder to the two saints to ‘Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples’
Our gospel text from St Luke sees Jesus sending out the seventy-two to preach in his name and to bring his healing power to others. He gives them instructions about what they are to do and say, and he reminds them that there will be difficulties as he is sending them out ‘like lambs among wolves’. There is also the reminder that the harvest is rich but the labourers are few and still today that is very true, and so the example of Timothy and Titus is placed before us as an encouragement to follow their example and the example of the Apostles, and so go out in our own way and spread the Good News.

"Lord, may the joy and truth of the gospel transform my life that I may witness it to those around me. Grant that I may spread your truth and your light wherever I go.” Amen.

리카이니아(Lycaenia)의 리스트라(Lystra) 태생인 성 티모테우스(Timotheus, 또는 티모테오, 디모테오)는 그리스인 아버지와 유대교에서 개종한 에우니케(Eunice)의 아들이다. 그는 성 바오로(Paulus)가 리스트라에서 설교할 때 그의 제자가 되었으며, 그 후 성 바오로의 친구이자 오른팔 역할을 하였다(사도 16,1-4). 그는 혹시 말썽이 날까봐 할례를 받은 후 바오로의 제2차 전교 여행을 수행하였다.
바오로가 유대인의 적개심 때문에 베레아(Berea)를 몰래 빠져나갈 때, 성 티모테우스는 그대로 남아 있다가 테살로니카(Thessalonica)로 파견되어 그곳의 상황을 보고하고, 또 박해 중의 그리스도인들을 격려하였다. 58년 성 티모테우스와 에라스투스(Erastus)는 마케도니아(Macedonia)로 파견되었으며, 그 후 코린토스(Corinthos)로 가서 바오로의 가르침을 명심하라는 권고를 하였다. 바오로가 카이사레아(Caesarea)에서 투옥되고 또 로마(Roma)로 이감되었을 때, 성 티모테우스도 같이 있었음이 분명한데, 그 후 그는 에페수스로 가서 그곳의 초대주교로 봉직하였다. 그는 디아나(Diana)를 공경하는 카타고리아의 이교 축제를 공식적으로 반대하다가 돌에 맞아 순교하였다. 티모테우스에게 보낸 바오로의 두 편지는 65년경에 마케도니아에서 썼을 것이다.
