성 바오로 사도
사도 바오로의 개종 축일을 지내는 이유는 '개종이야말로 하느님의 큰 은총'이기 때문입니다. 부활하신 그리스도께서 영광스러운 모습으로 나타나시자 바오로가 즉시 순종한 것은 하느님 은총의 결과입니다. 바오로를 이방인의 사도로 변화시켜주신 주님의 놀라운 업적을 찬양하기 위해 개종 축일을 지내며 10세기부터는 모든 교회가 이 축일을 지내게 됩니다. 바오로 사도가 다마스쿠스로 가는 길에서의 예수님과의 만남을 근거로 1월 25일을 개종 축일로 지냅니다.

해설) 바오로는 유다인으로 킬리키아의 타르수스에서 나지만, 예루살렘으로 유학을 가서 가말리엘의 제자로 정통 유다 율법을 전수 받은 사람입니다. 바오로는 예루살렘의 의회의원이고 그래서 대사제의 권한을 위임받아서 그리스도교 신자라면 남녀를 가리지 않고 붙잡아 감옥에 넣으면서까지 그리스도교를 박해하던 사람입니다.
그 무렵 바오로가 백성에게 말하였다. 3 “나는 유다 사람입니다. 킬리키아의 타르수스에서 태어났지만 이 도성 예루살렘에서 자랐고, 가말리엘 문하에서 조상 전래의 엄격한 율법에 따라 교육을 받았습니다. 오늘날 여러분이 모두 그렇듯이 나도 하느님을 열성으로 섬기는 사람이었습니다. 4 또 신자들을 죽일 작정으로 이 새로운 길을 박해하여, 남자 여자 할 것 없이 포박하고 감옥에 넣었습니다. 5 대사제와 온 원로단도 나에 관하여 증언해 줄 수 있습니다. 나는 그들에게서 동포들에게 가는 서한까지 받아 다마스쿠스로 갔습니다. 그곳에 있는 사람들도 결박하여 예루살렘으로 끌고 와 처벌을 받게 하려는 것이었습니다. 6 그런데 내가 길을 떠나 정오쯤 다마스쿠스에 가까이 이르렀을 때, 갑자기 하늘에서 큰 빛이 번쩍이며 내 둘레를 비추었습니다. 7 나는 바닥에 엎어졌습니다. 그리고 ‘사울아, 사울아, 왜 나를 박해하느냐?’ 하고 나에게 말하는 소리를 들었습니다. 8 내가 ‘주님, 주님은 누구십니까?’ 하고 여쭙자, 그분께서 나에게 이르셨습니다. ‘나는 네가 박해하는 나자렛 사람 예수다.’ 9 나와 함께 있던 이들은 빛은 보았지만, 나에게 말씀하시는 분의 소리는 듣지 못하였습니다. 10 ‘주님, 제가 어떻게 해야 합니까?’ 하고 내가 여쭈었더니, 주님께서 나에게 이르셨습니다. ‘일어나 다마스쿠스로 들어가거라. 장차 네가 하도록 결정되어 있는 모든 일에 관하여 거기에서 누가 너에게 일러 줄 것이다.’ 11 나는 그 눈부신 빛 때문에 앞을 볼 수가 없어, 나와 함께 가던 이들의 손에 이끌려 다마스쿠스로 들어갔습니다. 12 거기에는 하나니아스라는 사람이 있었습니다. 그는 율법에 따라 사는 독실한 사람으로, 그곳에 사는 모든 유다인에게 좋은 평판을 받고 있었습니다. 13 그가 나를 찾아와 앞에 서서, ‘사울 형제, 눈을 뜨십시오.’ 하고 나에게 말하였습니다. 그 순간 나는 눈을 뜨고 그를 보게 되었습니다. 14 그때에 하나니아스가 말하였습니다. ‘우리 조상들의 하느님께서는 당신을 선택하시어, 그분의 뜻을 깨닫고 의로우신 분을 뵙고 또 그분의 입에서 나오는 소리를 듣게 하셨습니다. 15 당신이 보고 들은 것을 모든 사람에게 전하는 그분의 증인이 되라는 것입니다. 16 그러니 이제 무엇을 망설입니까? 일어나 그분의 이름을 받들어 부르며 세례를 받고 죄를 용서받으십시오.’”

Paul addressed the people in these words: 3 "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city. At the feet of Gamaliel I was educated strictly in our ancestral law and was zealous for God, just as all of you are today. 4 I persecuted this Way to death, binding both men and women and delivering them to prison. 5 Even the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify on my behalf. For from them I even received letters to the brothers and set out for Damascus to bring back to Jerusalem in chains for punishment those there as well. 6 "On that journey as I drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?' 8 I replied, 'Who are you, sir?' And he said to me, 'I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.' 9 My companions saw the light but did not hear the voice of the one who spoke to me. 10 I asked, 'What shall I do, sir?' The Lord answered me, 'Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told about everything appointed for you to do.' 11 Since I could see nothing because of the brightness of that light, I was led by hand by my companions and entered Damascus. 12 "A certain Ananias, a devout observer of the law, and highly spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, 13 came to me and stood there and said, 'Saul, my brother, regain your sight.' 묵상) 바오로는 그리스도를 믿는 신자들을 잡아서 예루살렘으로 끌고 가려고 다마스쿠스로 가다가 부활하신 예수님을 만납니다. 부활하신 예수님과의 직접적인 만남으로 바오로는 회심하게 됩니다. 예수님과의 만남으로 바오로는 그리스도인을 박해하던 자에서 그리스도의 복음을 선포하는 사도로 변하게 된 것입니다.

해설) 예수님께서는 당신 제자들에게 온 세상으로 가서 모든 피조물들에게 복음을 선포하라고 하십니다. 복음 선포에 대한 반응은 믿음 아니면 불신입니다. 믿음은 죽으시고 부활하신 예수님을 받아들이는 결단입니다. 이 결단을 내린 사람은 그리스도와 함께 죽고 그리스도와 함께 부활하는 결단을 내린 사람으로서 그리스도의 세례를 받을 것입니다.
그때에 예수님께서 열한 제자에게 나타나시어 15 그들에게 이르셨다. “너희는 온 세상에 가서 모든 피조물에게 복음을 선포하여라. 16 믿고 세례를 받는 이는 구원을 받고 믿지 않는 자는 단죄를 받을 것이다. 17 믿는 이들에게는 이러한 표징들이 따를 것이다. 곧 내 이름으로 마귀들을 쫓아내고 새로운 언어들을 말하며, 18 손으로 뱀을 집어 들고 독을 마셔도 아무런 해도 입지 않으며, 또 병자들에게 손을 얹으면 병이 나을 것이다.”

묵상) 믿음의 세례를 받은 사람은 지금 여기서부터 영원한 생명의 삶을 살 것입니다. 그러나 믿지 않는 사람은 멸망할 것입니다. 예수님을 모르면 결코 예수님을 믿을 수가 없습니다. 예수님을 바르게 알면 예수님을 사랑하고 믿게 됩니다. 부활하신 예수님과 만난 바오로는 예수님을 알게 되고 믿게 되고 그리스도의 복음을 전하게 됩니다.
우리는 삶의 한가운데서 주님을 만나는 경우가 있습니다. 바오로는 어느 날 큰 빛으로 오신 예수님을 만납니다. 그러자 예수님을 박해하던 사람에서 그리스도의 복음을 전하는 사람으로 변합니다. 누구든지 그리스도를 만나면 새롭게 됩니다. 삶의 목표를 오직 주님께만 두고 사는 사람은 진정 축복받은 사람입니다.

제자들에게 나타나시어 사명을 부여하시다

1. 주님께서 내게 부여하신 선교의 사명에 충실합니까? 나는 구원의 기쁜 소식을 세상에 어떻게 선포하며 살고 있습니까?
2. 주님은 지금 나에게 어떤 말씀을 하고 계십니까? 믿음이 없는 사람들에게 구원의 기쁜 소식을 전하는데 내게 부족한 부분은 없습니까? 삶 속에서 믿는 이들에게 따르는 표징을 체험한 적이 있습니까? 그 표징이 주는 의미는 무엇입니까?

Jesus' great commision
Paul (also known by his Jewish name Saul) was born in Tarsus in Cilicia in modern-day Turkey. He was educated and was a Pharisee which meant that he was well acquainted with both the Law and the Scriptures which is evident in his writings. As a faithful Jew he persecuted the early Christians until he was struck down on his way to Damascus (in modern-day Syria) to arrest some Christians. In this incident, the Risen Lord appeared to Paul and from then on Paul becomes the greatest champion of the faith and is known as the Apostle to the Gentiles. He met with St Peter and the other Apostles in Jerusalem on a number of occasions and undertook three great missionary journeys to spread the faith. These journeys took him through Palestine but also through Syria, Turkey, Crete, Greece and Malta. During some of these journeys he funded himself through his work as a tent maker. Eventually Paul ends up in Rome where, even under house arrest, he spreads the faith and writes some of the letters found in the New Testament to the churches he had founded on his travels and also to individuals to bolster their faith. These letters also contain Paul’s understanding of who Jesus Christ is and the importance of the death and resurrection of Christ. He was beheaded during the persecutions in the reign of Emperor Nero.
Today we celebrate the conversion of one of the greatest persecutors of the early Christian Church and the two texts from the Acts of the Apostles recount the moment when the Lord himself appeared to Saul. The first account is told by Paul himself and he begins by reminding the people that he was a faithful Jew, and a Pharisee, who persecuted the early Christians.
The second account is told from a historical perspective. It was not unusual for the Jews of the time to have a traditional Jewish name and a Roman equivalent and so we have Saul and the Roman name of Paul. What is key is that the Apostle to the Gentiles now goes by his Roman name showing that he has left his old way of life behind and has devoted himself completely to the Christian Way. The Psalm takes up the instruction found in our gospel for today.
Our gospel text is a post-resurrection encounter between Jesus and the Eleven and in the passage he tells them to ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation’. He gives them power and authority and the gift of tongues so that the message may be spread far and wide. That same instruction is given to us in our own day but we will only be effective in that duty if we are converted daily to the gospel. As the Lord called Saul to conversion he is calling us also, though not necessarily as obviously as he called Saul.
Prayer :
“Lord Jesus, through the gift of your Holy Spirit, you fill us with an indomitable spirit of praise and joy which no earthly trial can subdue. Fill me with your resurrection joy and help me to live a life of praise and thanksgiving for your glory. May I witness to those around me the joy of the gospel and the reality of your resurrection.” Amen.

주님의 명을 받고 사울을 찾아 나섰던 다마스쿠스의 성 아나니아는 사울에게 손을 얹어 눈을 뜨게 하였고 또 사울에게 세례를 베풀었다(사도 9,10-19). 전설에 의하면 성 아나니아는 다마스쿠스와 엘레우테로폴리스(Eleutheropolis)의 선교사로 활약하다가 순교하였다.
하나니아스는 바오로의 회심에 깊이 관여된 인물이다. 다마스쿠스로 교인들을 잡으러 가던 바오로는 도중에 강렬한 빛을 만나 바닥에 엎어진다. 그러자 예수님의 음성이 들렸다. “사울아 왜 나를 박해하느냐”(사도 9,3-4) 이렇게 해서 바오로는 살아 계신 예수님을 만나고 삶의 방향을 바꾼다.순간 그는 눈이 멀어 있었다. 실제로 눈이 멀었을 수도 있지만 무얼 해야 할지 아무것도 모르는 상황을 상징하기도 한다. 그토록 자신감에 차서 교인들을 박해하던 사람이 그게 아니라는 확신을 받았으니 어쩔 줄 몰랐을 것이다. 이 상황의 설명이 눈이 멀었다는 것으로 표현되었을 것이다.이후 바오로를 초대교회 안으로 이끌어준 사람이 하나니아스였다. 그가 안수하자 바오로는 다시 보게 된다(사도 9,18). 안수를 통해 삶의 방향을 확신한 것이다. 성령체험이었다. 바오로는 전혀 새로운 사람으로 눈을 뜬 것이다. 이렇듯 하나니아스는 바오로의 영적 스승이었다. 하지만 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 성경에도 짧게 등장한다.사도행전에 의하면 어느 날 그에게 주님께서 나타나신다. “일어나 유다의 집에 있는 사울이라는 사람을 찾아라.” 그러자 하나니아스가 답한다. “주님 그가 교인들에게 얼마나 못된 짓을 했는지 많은 이들에게서 들었습니다.” 그러나 주님께서는 “가거라. 그는 내가 선택한 그릇이다.”(사도 9,10-17) 그는 즉시 순명하며 사울을 만난다. 믿음의 사람이었던 것이다.이렇듯 하나니아스는 주님의 명령에 자신의 편견을 접었다. 그리하여 아무런 의심 없이 바오로와 지내며 복음의 핵심을 가르쳤다. 바오로는 워낙 똑똑한 사람이었기에 질문도 많았을 것이다. 많은 부담을 느꼈을지 모른다. 그러나 하나니아스는 주님의 말씀을 떠올리며 그에게 선교의 발판을 마련해 주었다.그리고 다마스쿠스에서 바오로가 신앙의 뿌리를 내리도록 후견인이 되어주었다. 이후 그는 초대교회 무대에서 사라진다. 바오로는 하나니아스라는 스승을 만났기에 그의 사상이 풍요로워질 수 있었을 것이다. 사도 뒤에는 이렇듯 알려지지 않은 위대한 스승이 있었던 것이다. 하나니아스의 뜻은 ‘주님은 은혜롭다’라는 의미다.
