The Epiphany of the Lord
우리는 동방에서 그분의 별을 보고 그분께 경배하러 왔습니다
오늘은 주님 공현 대축일입니다. 예수 그리스도께서 공적으로 드러나십니다. 메시아의 탄생이 이스라엘을 넘어 온 세상에 알려집니다. 온 세상 임금들이 모두 와서 경배 드리며 만백성이 주님을 섬길 것입니다. 주님께서는 가난하고 소외된 이들을 구하시고 힘없고 약한 이들에게 당신 자비를 베푸실 것입니다.
제1독서는 제3이사야서의 말씀입니다. 주님께서 바빌론 유배 이후 예루살렘을 위한 희망의 메시지를 선포하십니다. 온 세상이 어둠에 덮여 모든 민족이 암흑에 싸여 있을 때, 주님의 거룩한 빛이 이스라엘을 비출 것입니다. 주님의 은총과 축복이 내릴 것입니다. 주님의 영광이 예루살렘 위에 나타날 것입니다. 이제 예루살렘은 절망으로부터 일어나야 합니다. 주님 영광의 빛을 받아 그 빛을 다른 민족에게도 비추어야 합니다. 그러면 온 세상 만백성들이 그 영광의 빛을 보고 모여들 것입니다. 왕들이 제물을 바치고 백성들이 봉헌 예물을 바칠 것입니다. 온 세상 만백성들은 주님의 영광을 찾아 몰려들 것입니다. 진정 예루살렘은 새로운 희망의 빛을 비추어야 합니다.
제2독서는 에페소서의 말씀입니다. 하느님께서 심오한 구원 계획을 알려 주십니다. 그 심오한 계획은 이방인들도 예수 그리스도의 복음을 들을 수 있다는 것입니다. 하느님의 심오한 구원 계획은 이방인들도 예수 그리스도의 복음을 듣고 그 복음을 받아들여 예수 그리스도와 함께 살면 하느님의 축복을 받는다는 것입니다. 이방인도 예수 그리스도의 복음을 받아들여 예수 그리스도와 한 몸의 지체가 되면, 하느님께서 약속하신 영원한 생명과 은총과 축복과 하느님 나라를 상속받을 것입니다. 이방인도 하느님의 자녀가 되도록 부르십니다. 하느님의 자녀라면 하느님 나라의 상속자입니다. 하느님의 참된 자녀는 하느님의 나라의 영원한 생명을 받습니다.
오늘의 복음은 마태오 복음입니다. 동방 박사들이 메시아께 경배를 드리러 옵니다. 멀리 동방에서 메시아의 별을 보고 경배 드리러 온 동방 박사들은 아기 예수님에게 황금과 유황과 몰약을 예물로 바칩니다. 아기 예수님을 찾아온 동방 박사들은 이방인의 왕들입니다. 이방인들이 메시아의 별을 알아보고 그분을 찾아온다는 것은 하느님의 구원이 이스라엘의 국경을 넘어 온 세상 만백성에게 전해졌다는 것입니다. 예수님은 유다의 가난하고 소외된 사람들에게 큰 기쁨을 줄 뿐만 아니라, 멀리 있는 이방인들에게도 구원과 희망을 주시는 분입니다. 예수님은 온 세상 모든 사람들에게 자비를 베푸시는 만민의 구세주이십니다. 예수님의 성탄과 공현은 이방인들에게도 구원의 희망과 기쁨을 줍니다.

해설) 주님의 영광이 예루살렘을 비춥니다. 이제 예루살렘은 일어나 비추어야 합니다. 주님의 빛을 받아서 그 빛을 온 세상에 비추어야 합니다. 그러면 만민들이 그 빛을 보고 모여들 것입니다. 바다의 보물과 뭇 민족의 재물이 밀려올 것입니다. 금과 향료를 싣고 사람들이 빛을 찾아 몰려들 것입니다. 예루살렘은 주님의 빛을 비추어야 합니다.
예루살렘아, 1 일어나 비추어라. 너의 빛이 왔다. 주님의 영광이 네 위에 떠올랐다. 2 자 보라, 어둠이 땅을 덮고 암흑이 겨레들을 덮으리라. 그러나 네 위에는 주님께서 떠오르시고 그분의 영광이 네 위에 나타나리라. 3 민족들이 너의 빛을 향하여, 임금들이 떠오르는 너의 광명을 향하여 오리라. 4 네 눈을 들어 주위를 둘러보아라. 그들이 모두 모여 네게로 온다. 너의 아들들이 먼 곳에서 오고 너의 딸들이 팔에 안겨 온다. 5 그때 이것을 보는 너는 기쁜 빛으로 가득하고 너의 마음은 두근거리며 벅차오르리라. 바다의 보화가 너에게로 흘러들고 민족들의 재물이 너에게로 들어온다. 6 낙타 무리가 너를 덮고 미디안과 에파의 수낙타들이 너를 덮으리라. 그들은 모두 스바에서 오면서 금과 유향을 가져와 주님께서 찬미받으실 일들을 알리리라.

해설) 하느님의 심오한 구원 계획은 이방인들도 예수 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 듣고 예수님과 함께 살면서 하느님의 축복을 받고, 하느님과 한 몸의 지체가 되어 하느님께서 약속하신 영원한 생명과 하느님 나라를 상속받는다는 것입니다. 하느님의 자녀는 하느님 나라의 상속자입니다. 하느님의 참된 자녀는 영원한 생명을 삽니다.
형제 여러분, 2 하느님께서 여러분을 위하여 나에게 주신 은총의 직무를 여러분은 들었을 줄 압니다. 3 나는 계시를 통하여 그 신비를 알게 되었습니다. 5 그 신비가 과거의 모든 세대에서는 사람들에게 알려지지 않았지만, 지금은 성령을 통하여 그분의 거룩한 사도들과 예언자들에게 계시되었습니다. 6 곧 다른 민족들도 그리스도 예수님 안에서 복음을 통하여, 공동 상속자가 되고 한 몸의 지체가 되며 약속의 공동 수혜자가 된다는 것입니다.

해설) 동방박사 세 사람이 하늘의 별을 보고 예수님께 경배하러 옵니다. 예수님을 찾아온 사람들은 유다인이 아닌 동방에서 온 왕들입니다. 동방의 왕들이 별을 보고 찾아온다는 것은 하느님의 구원이 유다의 국경을 넘어 온 세상에 전해졌다는 것을 뜻합니다. 예수 그리스도의 공현은 이방인에게도 구원의 기쁨과 희망을 주는 것입니다.
1 예수님께서는 헤로데 임금 때에 유다 베들레헴에서 태어나셨다. 그러자 동방에서 박사들이 예루살렘에 와서, 2 “유다인들의 임금으로 태어나신 분이 어디 계십니까? 우리는 동방에서 그분의 별을 보고 그분께 경배하러 왔습니다.”하고 말하였다. 3 이 말을 듣고 헤로데 임금을 비롯하여 온 예루살렘이 깜짝 놀랐다. 4 헤로데는 백성의 수석 사제들과 율법 학자들을 모두 모아 놓고, 메시아가 태어날 곳이 어디인지 물어보았다. 5 그들이 헤로데에게 말하였다. “유다 베들레헴입니다. 사실 예언자가 이렇게 기록해 놓았습니다. 6 ‘유다 땅 베들레헴아, 너는 유다의 주요 고을 가운데 결코 가장 작은 고을이 아니다. 너에게서 통치자가 나와 내 백성 이스라엘을 보살피리라.’” 7 그때에 헤로데는 박사들을 몰래 불러 별이 나타난 시간을 정확히 알아내고서는, 8 그들을 베들레헴으로 보내면서 말하였다. “가서 그 아기에 관하여 잘 알아보시오. 그리고 그 아기를 찾거든 나에게 알려 주시오. 나도 가서 경배하겠소.” 9 그들은 임금의 말을 듣고 길을 떠났다. 그러자 동방에서 본 별이 그들을 앞서 가다가, 아기가 있는 곳 위에 이르러 멈추었다. 10 그들은 그 별을 보고 더없이 기뻐하였다. 11 그리고 그 집에 들어가 어머니 마리아와 함께 있는 아기를 보고 땅에 엎드려 경배하였다. 또 보물 상자를 열고 아기에게 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드렸다. 12 그들은 꿈에 헤로데에게 돌아가지 말라는 지시를 받고, 다른 길로 자기 고장에 돌아갔다.

하느님께서 친히 사람이 되어 세상에 오십니다. 온 세상을 구원하실 메시아를 간절히 기다리던 동방의 왕들은 하늘의 별을 따라 아기 예수님께로 옵니다. 하느님의 구원을 간절히 바라는 사람은 성령의 이끄심으로 예수 그리스도를 알게 될 것입니다. 또 말씀 안에서 예수님을 만난 사람은 그리스도 안에서 구원의 삶을 살 것입니다.

1. 헤로데 왕은 왜 아기 예수님의 탄생 이야기를 듣고 당황하였습니까? 그리고 왜 마음에도 없는 거짓말을 하였습니까? 세 동방박사를 이끈 것은 무엇입니까? 그들은 왜 작고 초라한 모습으로 오신 예수님께 경배하기 위하여 멀고도 험한 여정을 택했습니까? 그들을 이끈 것은 무엇이며 그들 마음 속 무엇이 그들로 하여금 예수님을 찾도록 이끌었습니까? 그들은 여정을 통해 무엇을 찾을 수 있었습니까?
2. 나는 아기 예수님의 탄생에 대해 어떤 마음을 갖고 살고 있습니까? 육적인 삶에 대한 미련 때문에 변화를 두려워하는 헤로데처럼 예수님을 거부하고 있지는 않습니까? 지혜는 동방박사들이 예수님을 찾도록 광야로 이끌었습니다. 나도 그들처럼 일상의 삶 안에서 하느님을 찾는 지혜를 갖고 있습니까? 나의 마음속에 있는 별은 지금 나를 어디로 이끌고 있습니까? 나는 구유에 계신 아기 예수님께 무엇을 예물로 내어 드릴 수 있습니까?

The visit of the Magi
This solemnity recalls the visit of the Magi – the Three Wise Men – to the manger in Bethlehem where they found the Christ-Child. They had followed a star from the east and came to pay him homage – they discovered the Child by their own methods and not by the message of any angel. In the Eastern Churches this day is celebrated with more solemnity than Christmas Day for it is the day when the newborn Saviour was presented to his people. The peoples of the East were regarded as pagan peoples so the arrival of these three wise men – traditionally named Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar – is significant for it shows that Christ is already winning the hearts and minds of people. The gold represents Christ’s kingship, the frankincense his divinity, and the myrrh his burial.
The feast of the Epiphany celebrates the first formal presentation of the Christ-child to the world represented by the three Wise Men from the east, traditionally named Caspar, Balthasar and Melchior.
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah speaks of the glory of the Lord now becoming visible and of the great joy that this brings to the earth. It speaks of the glory being shown to the nations and of kings coming to the ‘dawning brightness’ just as happened in the days after the Lord’s incarnation. The one they come to see is the one who brings light to the earth and removes the darkness which covers the earth.
In the second reading from the letter to the Ephesians, the people are reminded that, as with the apostles, St Paul was given the Good News of Jesus Christ and which he brought to the Ephesians. This is a message which the people of old did not know or understand but which was given to the prophets and the apostles to bring to the peoples, and not just to the people of the House of Israel but to all peoples – Jew and pagan alike.
The gospel text from St Matthew recalls how the three Wise Men came to find the King of the Jews and the homage they paid to him. The three men in particular represent all peoples – Jew and Gentile alike – and on our behalf they pay homage to our infant king while also giving him gifts from us, gifts which represent his kingship, his divinity and his death. There is a contrast in the story between the palace of Herod in the capital city, and the stable in the humble town of Bethlehem. There are also echoes of the death of Jesus as they ask for the ‘King of the Jews’ which was the charge which would eventually have Jesus executed. Today we are unable to give him presents as the Wise Men did for he is no longer physically present but we can give him the gift of believing in him and of proclaiming the Gospel. As the Christmas carol says – ‘what I have I give him, give my all’.
Prayer :
"Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for bringing salvation to all the nations. May the gospel of salvation be proclaimed to every nation today and to every person on the face of the earth. Help me to be a good witness of the joy of the gospel to all I meet." Amen.

예수 아기를 예배하기 위하여 동방에서 온 현인 세 사람에 관한 기록이 마태오 2장 1-2절에 언급되어 있다. 그들은 헤로데로부터 아기 나실 곳이 어디냐는 질문을 받고, 유다 베들레헴이라고 대답하고 별을 따라 가서 아기를 찾아 “경배하고”, “황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드렸다.” 꿈에 헤로데에게로 돌아가지 말라는 지시를 받고 다른 길로 자기 나라로 돌아갔다. 고대의 전승에 의하면 이들은 현인(Magi)들로서 성 발타사르(Balthasar), 성 가스파르 그리고 성 멜키오르(Melchior)라고 한다. 현대 학자들은 그들이 바빌로니아(Babylonia)나 아라비아(Arabia)에서 온 점성가들로 믿고 있다.
