성 요한 사도 복음사가
(?-100?) 12사도 중의 한 사람. 갈릴래아의 어부이며 제베대오의 아들로서 형 야고보와 함께 일찍부터 예수님의 제자가 됩니다. 12제자 중에서도 베드로와 야고보와 함께 대표적인 인물이며 과격한 성격 때문에 천둥의 아들이라 불립니다. 성령강림 후 베드로와 함께 예루살렘과 사마리아에서 선교활동을 합니다. 전승에 의하면 도미티아누스 황제의 대박해 때에 파트모스섬으로 유배되었다가 에페소로 돌아가 주후 100년경에 90세로 세상을 떠났다고 합니다. 파트모스섬에서는 「요한 묵시록」을, 에페소에서는 「요한 복음」과 서간을 요한 공동체와 함께 썼다고 전해지고 있습니다. 그의 문장은 독수리입니다.

해설) 다른 사람을 사랑하는 것은 하느님과 하나 되는 것입니다. 다른 사람을 사랑하는 것은 빛 속에 살아가는 것이며, 형제자매인 모든 사람과 하나 되는 것입니다. 하느님을 사랑하는 것은 하느님의 정의와 사랑을 실천하는 것이고 하느님의 자녀가 되는 것이고 그래서 죄를 용서받는 것이며 두려움에서 벗어나는 것입니다.
사랑하는 여러분, 1 처음부터 있어 온 것, 우리가 들은 것, 우리 눈으로 본 것, 우리가 살펴보고 우리 손으로 만져 본 것, 이 생명의 말씀에 관하여 말하고자 합니다. 2 그 생명이 나타나셨습니다. 우리가 그 생명을 보고 증언합니다. 그리고 여러분에게 그 영원한 생명을 선포합니다. 영원한 생명은 아버지와 함께 계시다가 우리에게 나타나셨습니다. 3 우리가 보고 들은 것을 여러분에게도 선포합니다. 여러분도 우리와 친교를 나누게 하려는 것입니다. 우리의 친교는 아버지와 또 그 아드님이신 예수 그리스도와 나누는 것입니다. 4 우리의 기쁨이 충만해지도록 이 글을 씁니다.

Beloved: 1 What was from the beginning, what we have heard,what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life — 2 for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was made visible to us— 3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing this so that our joy may be complete.
묵상) 영원한 생명은 아버지와 함께 있다가 아들에게 전달되며, 아들로부터 그리스도의 증인들에게 그리고 증인들로부터 신자들에게 전달됩니다. 참 생명은 사랑과 친교로 더 넓게 전달됩니다. 그리스도 공동체는 영원한 생명을 지향하는 공동체입니다. 그리스도 공동체는 아버지와 아들 사이의 긴밀한 일치를 증언하고 그래서 참 기쁨을 낳습니다.

< 다른 제자가 베드로보다 빨리 달려 무덤에 먼저 다다랐다. >
해설) 예수님께서 사랑하신 제자가 부활 사건을 알리는 빈 무덤에 베드로보다 먼저 달려가 도착합니다. 그러나 그는 겸손하게 으뜸 사도인 베드로가 먼저 무덤 안으로 들어가게 하고 자신은 그 뒤를 따라 들어갑니다. 예수님께서 사랑하신 제자는 부활을 믿은 첫 사람이 되어 이 모든 사실의 목격 증인으로 그리스도의 부활을 전합니다.
주간 첫날, 마리아 막달레나는 2 시몬 베드로와 예수님께서 사랑하신 다른 제자에게 달려가서 말하였다. “누가 주님을 무덤에서 꺼내 갔습니다. 어디에 모셨는지 모르겠습니다.”3 베드로와 다른 제자는 밖으로 나와 무덤으로 갔다. 4 두 사람이 함께 달렸는데, 다른 제자가 베드로보다 빨리 달려 무덤에 먼저 다다랐다. 5 그는 몸을 굽혀 아마포가 놓여 있는 것을 보기는 하였지만, 안으로 들어가지는 않았다. 6 시몬 베드로가 뒤따라와서 무덤으로 들어가 아마포가 놓여 있는 것을 보았다. 7 예수님의 얼굴을 쌌던 수건은 아마포와 함께 놓여 있지 않고, 따로 한곳에 개켜져 있었다. 8 그제야 무덤에 먼저 다다른 다른 제자도 들어갔다. 그리고 보고 믿었다.

1 On the first day of the week, 2 Mary Magdalene ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they put him." 3 So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. 4 They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; 5 he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. 6 When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, 7 and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. 8 Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.
묵상) 참 사랑은 사랑하는 분에게 온전히 예속되게 하고 자신을 온전히 투신하게 하는 신비스런 힘을 가지고 있습니다. 예수님께서 살아 계시다는 것을 그 제자는 사랑의 눈으로 알아봅니다. 누구보다도 예수님을 사랑하고 예수님을 가까이 따랐던 그 제자는 한결같은 사랑으로 그분을 증언하는 '사랑의 사도'가 됩니다.
예수님께서 사랑하신 제자는 늘 예수님과 함께 하며 예수님께서 십자가에서 돌아가실 때에도 성모님과 함께 십자가 아래에 있습니다. 예수님께서 사랑하신 제자는 빈 무덤에도 뛰어가며, 마지막에는 성모님을 어머니로 모십니다. 예수님께서 사랑하신 제자는 자기가 보고 들은 사랑의 예수님을 증언하고 글로 남겨 후세에 전합니다.

1. 마리아 막달레나는 왜 이른 아침부터 무덤에 찾아갔습니까? 예수님이 사랑하시던 제자 요한은 어떤 마음으로 무덤까지 달려갔습니까? 마리아와 요한이 발견한 것은 무엇입니까?
2. 텅 빈 주님의 무덤이 나에게 주는 의미는 무엇입니까? 나는 항상 나의 삶 속에 살아 계시는 주님을, 인간적 눈으로만 보고판단하기에 예수님의 참 모습을 발견하지 못하며 살고 있지는 않습니까? 예수님의 죽음과 부활은 내 삶에 어떤 의미를 주고 있습니까?

The Empty Tomb
The younger brother of St James the Greater, John was the only apostle that we know of who did not suffer martyrdom, but died at a good age in Ephesus (near the modern-day town of Selçuk in western Turkey) maybe as late as 100 AD. He is attributed with authorship of the fourth Gospel, of three epistles and of the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse) though it is doubtful that he is the author of the last of these. He is sometimes referred to as ‘John the Divine’ or ‘John the Theologian’. Being ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved’ and the only apostle to be present at the foot of the Cross, he was entrusted with the care of Our Lady by our Lord at the crucifixion.
In the first reading, St John is giving testimony that what he has said and written about Jesus Christ is the truth and it reminds us of the Prologue to his Gospel. He again says that the Lord has existed from the very beginning and existed in the world for ever but only now has become visible and tangible through the Incarnation. He is writing this account because he wants to share with others his joyful friendship with God and with Jesus Christ. It is almost John’s affidavit that what he is saying is correct and not some made up story.
In the gospel, we have the account of John and St Peter going to the tomb having heard that Jesus was no longer there. John gets there first but waits for Peter – the first among equals – before he goes in. They see that Jesus has risen and they believe all that he has said and this is what John’s testimony in the first reading points to. It is a little strange to have a reading concerning Jesus’ burial so soon after celebrating his birth but without this particular episode the birth of Jesus would be irrelevant for it is his death and resurrection which restored us to union with the Father. We too are challenged today to believe in God having been given assurances by John that Jesus is the Savior.

"Lord Jesus, you have triumphed over the grave and you have won new life for us. Give me the eyes of faith to see you in your glory. Help me to draw near to you and to grow in the knowledge of your great love and power." Amen

성 요한 스톤(Joannes Stone)은 성 아우구스티누스회의 수도자로서 신학박사였고, 영국 캔터베리(Canterbury)에서 태어나 그곳에서 순교했다는 사실 외에는 알려진 것이 거의 없다. 그는 드로이트위치(Droitwich)에서 교수와 수도원장으로서 봉사하다가 캔터베리로 돌아와서 헨리 8세 왕의 수장령을 반대한 죄로 1538년(또는 1539년) 12월에 체포되어 웨스트게이트(Westgate)에 수감되었다가 교수형과 극형을 받고 순교하였다. 아마도 12월 27일에 처형이 이루어졌으리라 추정하고 있다. 그는 1886년 교황 레오 13세(Leo XIII)에 의해 시복되었고, 1970년 10월 25일 교황 바오로 6세(Paulus VI)에 의해 잉글랜드와 웨일스(Wales)의 40명의 순교자 중 한 명으로 시성되었다. 그래서 10월 25일에 함께 축일을 기념하기도 한다.
