+ 민수기 21, 4ㄴ-9
<뱀이 사람을 물었을 때, 그 사람이 구리 뱀을 쳐다보면 살아났다.>
해설) 약속의 땅으로 가던 이스라엘 백성이 광야를 지나는 동안에 먹을 것과 마실 것 때문에 모세와 하느님께 불평합니다. 그러자 하느님께서 뱀들을 보냅니다. 뱀에게 물린 백성들이 모세에게 와서 도움을 청합니다. 하느님께서는 구리 뱀을 만들어 기둥에 달아놓고 그것을 바라보게 합니다. 구리 뱀을 쳐다본 사람은 살아납니다.
4 길을 가는 동안에 백성은 마음이 조급해졌다. 5 그래서 백성은 하느님과 모세에게 불평하였다. “당신들은 어쩌자고 우리를 이집트에서 올라오게 하여, 이 광야에서 죽게 하시오? 양식도 없고 물도 없소. 이 보잘것없는 양식은 이제 진저리가 나오.” 6 그러자 주님께서 백성에게 불 뱀들을 보내셨다. 그것들이 백성을 물어, 많은 이스라엘 백성이 죽었다. 7 백성이 모세에게 와서 간청하였다. “우리가 주님과 당신께 불평하여 죄를 지었습니다. 이 뱀을 우리에게서 치워 주시도록 주님께 기도해 주십시오.” 그래서 모세가 백성을 위하여 기도하였다. 8 그러자 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 불 뱀을 만들어 기둥 위에 달아 놓아라. 물린 자는 누구든지 그것을 보면 살게 될 것이다.” 9 그리하여 모세는 구리 뱀을 만들어 그것을 기둥 위에 달아 놓았다. 뱀이 사람을 물었을 때, 그 사람이 구리 뱀을 쳐다보면 살아났다.

4 With their patience worn out by the journey, 5 the people complained against God and Moses, "Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert, where there is no food or water? We are disgusted with this wretched food!" 6 In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents, which bit the people so that many of them died. 7 Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned in complaining against the LORD and you. Pray the LORD to take the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people, 8 and the LORD said to Moses, "Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if any who have been bitten look at it, they will live." 9 Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
묵상) 인간은 무엇을 바라보느냐에 따라서 그런 사람이 됩니다. 생명 자체이신 주님의 표징을 바라보면 생명을 얻습니다. 십자가에 달리신 예수 그리스도를 바라보면 참 생명을 얻고 치유의 은총을 받습니다. 예수님의 상처는 우리의 상처를 낫게 하는 명약입니다. 십자가에 달리신 그리스도를 바라보면 내적 치유와 영적 성장의 은총을 받습니다.

<그리스도께서는 당신 자신을 낮추셨습니다. 그러므로 하느님께서도 그분을 드높이 올리셨습니다.>
그리스도 예수님께서는 6 하느님의 모습을 지니셨지만 하느님과 같음을 당연한 것으로 여기지 않으시고 7 오히려 당신 자신을 비우시어 종의 모습을 취하시고 사람들과 같이 되셨습니다. 이렇게 여느 사람처럼 나타나 8 당신 자신을 낮추시어 죽음에 이르기까지, 십자가 죽음에 이르기까지 순종하셨습니다. 9 그러므로 하느님께서도 그분을 드높이 올리시고 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 그분께 주셨습니다. 10 그리하여 예수님의 이름 앞에 하늘과 땅 위와 땅 아래에 있는 자들이 다 무릎을 꿇고 11 예수 그리스도는 주님이시라고 모두 고백하며 하느님 아버지께 영광을 드리게 하셨습니다.

Brothers and sisters: 6 Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. 7 Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, 8 he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. 9 Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

< 사람의 아들도 들어 올려져야 한다. >
해설) 하느님께서는 이 세상을 사랑하셔서 외아들을 보내 주시어 그를 믿는 사람은 누구든지 멸망하지 않고 영원한 생명을 얻게 하십니다. 하느님께서 외아들을 세상에 보내신 것은 세상을 단죄하시려는 것이 아니라 아들을 통하여 구원하시려는 것입니다. 구리뱀이 광야에서 모세의 손에 높이 들렸던 것처럼 십자가의 예수님도 높이 올려 져야 합니다.
그때에 예수님께서 니코데모에게 말씀하셨다. 13 “하늘에서 내려온 이, 곧 사람의 아들 말고는 하늘로 올라간 이가 없다. 14 모세가 광야에서 뱀을 들어 올린 것처럼, 사람의 아들도 들어 올려져야 한다. 15 믿는 사람은 누구나 사람의 아들 안에서 영원한 생명을 얻게 하려는 것이다. 16 하느님께서는 세상을 너무나 사랑하신 나머지 외아들을 내 주시어, 그를 믿는 사람은 누구나 멸망하지 않고 영원한 생명을 얻게 하셨다. 17 하느님께서 아들을 세상에 보내신 것은, 세상을 심판하시려는 것이 아니라 세상이 아들을 통하여 구원을 받게 하시려는 것이다.”

Jesus said to Nicodemus: 13 "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life." 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.
묵상) 구리 뱀이 광야에서 모세의 손에 높이 들렸던 것처럼 사람의 아들도 높이 들려야 합니다. 사람의 아들이 높이 들려진 것은 그를 믿는 사람은 누구나 영원한 생명을 얻게 하기 위해서 입니다. 하느님께서는 이 세상을 사랑하셔서 당신의 아들을 보내주시는데 누구든지 그를 믿는 사람은 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하십니다.
대부분의 사람들은 성공과 행복을 추구하며 그 소망을 이루기 위해 하느님을 선택합니다. 그러나 성당에 들어서면 제일 먼저 우리를 반기시는 분은 십자가에 달리신 예수님입니다. 십자가의 예수님께서 우리를 십자가로 초대하십니다. 십자가의 예수님을 하늘의 영광으로 부르신 하느님이 우리의 참된 소망임을 믿는 것이 참 신앙입니다.

+ 요한 3,13-17
1. 광야에서 들려진 구리 뱀과 십자가가 보여주는 것은 무엇입니까? 나의 수고와 노력 없이 그저 바라보고 믿는 것만으로 구원받을 수 있다는 것은 어떤 의미입니까? 현재 내가 바라보고 내가 믿고 있는 것은 무엇입니까? 참 진리를 바라보려 하지 않고 내 손에 움켜진 것만 바라보고 있지는 않습니까?
2. 예수님께서 말씀하시는 영원한 생명은 무엇이라고 생각합니까? 그리고 나는 그것을 어떻게 얻을 수 있습니까? 예수님은 어떻게 우리에게 구원의 길을 열어주셨습니까? 예수님의 십자가 사건을 묵상하며 나는 하느님께서 인간을 얼마나 사랑하시는지 어떻게 알 수 있습니까?

God's love and judgment
Today’s feast celebrates three things: the first is the finding of the relics of the true Cross in 326 in an expedition led by St Helen (Helena, who was, for a time, wife of Emperor Constantius and mother of Emperor Constantine I – the first emperor to become a Christian); the second is the dedication of the churches at the site of the Holy Sepulchre in 335 which encompassed the Mount of Calvary and the tomb where the Lord was placed; and the return of the True Cross to Jerusalem in 629 by Emperor Heralcius II after the city had been liberated from the Persians. More importantly still and outside of the Easter Season, this annual feast is a chance for us to reflect on the significance of the Cross in our lives and of the redemption which Christ won for us by his death and resurrection. It is only through his death on the Cross and his resurrection from the dead that we are saved and only this gives meaning to the other celebrations throughout the liturgical year.
The first reading for today from the Book of Numbers recalls how the people in the wilderness had complained against God despite the fact that he had freed them from slavery in Egypt. For their ungratefulness, the Lord sent serpents among the people to punish them. Moses interceded with God and was told to fashion a bronze serpent to save from death those who were bitten by the serpents.
The second reading from the letter to the Philippians is one of the most beautiful passages in scripture for it tells us of how Jesus humbled himself and surrendered his equality with God to become one of us in order to save us. Through his humility he was raised above all other creatures and won our salvation. In return, ‘every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father’.
In the gospel, Jesus tells us that he had to be raised high, just as Moses raised the serpent, so that all peoples may be saved and be brought to eternal life. He tells Nicodemus in the passage that he was sent into the world to redeem it and not to condemn it. In the Cross is our salvation and the salvation of all peoples and it is this redemption which we celebrate today.
Prayer :
Jesus, thank You for dying so I could be saved. Help me to truly understand the significance of it. Remove my self-condemnation. Teach me to forgive myself as You have forgiven me. Allow me to live a saved person always extending the mercy You’ve shown me to others. - Amen.

성 마테르누스(또는 마테르노)는 독일 쾰른의 초대주교이며, 도나투스파와의 논쟁을 주도하던 인물이다. 전설적인 이야기에 따르면 그는 복음서에 나오는 나임 과부의 부활한 아들이다. 그 후 그는 열렬한 그리스도인이 되어 그리스도를 증거하다가 성 베드로(Petrus)의 명을 받고 성 에우카리우스(Eucharius, 12월 8일)와 성 발레리우스(Valerius, 1월 29일)와 함께 프랑스 지방 선교 길에 올랐다. 성 마테르누스는 통그레스(Tongres, 오늘날 벨기에 림부르흐 지방의 통게렌 Tongeren), 쾰른 그리고 트리어(Trier) 및 그 인근 지역을 맡았고, 쾰른 교구를 세우고 초대주교로 봉직하다가 선종하였다.
