생명의 빵 (Bread of Life)
오늘은 연중 제18주일입니다. 독서와 복음은 생명의 빵에 관한 말씀입니다. 모세는 마라에서 쓴물을 단물로 만들어 목마른 이스라엘 백성에게 먹이고 광야에서 만나와 메추라기로 배불리 먹입니다. 예수님께서는 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리로 오천 명을 먹이십니다. 예수님은 하늘에서 내려온 생명의 빵입니다.
제1독서는 탈출기의 말씀입니다. 종살이 노예살이에서 해방된 이스라엘 백성은 광야에서 주님께 불평불만을 터뜨립니다. 어리석은 백성은 자기들을 살리시기 위해 해방시키시는 하느님의 계획보다는 자기들을 노예로 만들고 억압하는 지배자의 계획을 더 좋아 하고 빵을 배불리 먹던 그 시절을 그리워합니다. 고통과 앞에서 당하는 그 유혹은 자유와 해방과 생명을 뿌리치고 이미 얻은 자유를 달콤한 노예살이에 다시 팔아넘기고 싶은 유혹입니다. 하느님께서는 아침마다 먹을 만큼씩만 거두어들이게 만나를 내리십니다. 모든 사람은 필요한 재화를 모자라지 않게 차지할 권리를 갖습니다. 쓰고 남는 것을 쌓아 놓는 일은 탐욕과 불평등을 낳게 됩니다.
제2독서는 사도 바오로의 에페소인들에게 보낸 편지입니다. 참 그리스도인은 이방인처럼 살지 말아야 합니다. 이방인들은 헛되고 부질없는 가치관을 가지고 삽니다. 하느님을 등진 인간은 하느님께 돌아서야 합니다. 오직 예수 그리스도 안에 진리가 있습니다. 누구든지 예수 그리스도의 가르침을 그대로 듣고 배우고 행한다면, 어리석은 생활을 정리하고 낡은 인간성을 벗어버리고 가치관을 새롭게 하여 하느님의 형상으로 창조된 새로운 사람이 될 것입니다. 누구든지 예수 그리스도를 믿으면 새사람이 됩니다. 누구든지 그리스도를 만나면 새롭게 변화됩니다. 예수 그리스도로 인해 새롭게 된 사람은 올바르고 거룩한 진리의 생활을 할 것입니다.
오늘의 복음은 요한복음입니다. 예수님께서 티베리아 호수 건너편에서 보리빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가지고 오천 명을 먹이는 기적을 베푸십니다. 그러자 군중들은 예수님을 찾아다닙니다. 배부름과 음식의 풍요로움을 계속 만끽하고 싶은 것입니다. 자기들은 아무런 노력도 하지 않고 거저 주어지는 부유함을 누리고 싶은 것입니다. 예수님께서는 온전한 삶을 추구하려는 인간들에게 스스로의 노력을 요구하십니다. 육체적 생명을 위한 양식 외에도 예수님께 인격적으로 의존하고 매달려야만 참 양식을 얻을 것입니다. 예수님이 바로 참된 양식입니다. 예수님은 생명의 빵입니다. 예수님께 나아가는 사람은 결코 배고프지 않고 목마르지 않을 것입니다.

해설) 노예살이에서 해방되었어도 이스라엘은 주님께 불평을 터뜨립니다. 어리석은 백성은 해방의 주님보다 빵을 배불리 먹던 그 시절을 그리워합니다. 고통을 당할 때 그 고통을 고통으로만 여기는 사람은 고통을 통해서 오는 주님의 은총을 받지 못합니다. 주님께서는 고통을 통해서도 은총의 선물을 내리시는 분입니다.
그 무렵 2 이스라엘 자손들의 온 공동체가 광야에서 모세와 아론에게 불평하였다. 3 이들에게 이스라엘 자손들이 말하였다. “아, 우리가 고기 냄비 곁에 앉아 빵을 배불리 먹던 그때, 이집트 땅에서 주님의 손에 죽었더라면! 그런데 당신들은 이 무리를 모조리 굶겨 죽이려고, 우리를 이 광야로 끌고 왔소?” 4 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이제 내가 하늘에서 너희에게 양식을 비처럼 내려 줄 터이니, 백성은 날마다 나가서 그날 먹을 만큼 모아들이게 하여라. 이렇게 하여 나는 이 백성이 나의 지시를 따르는지 따르지 않는지 시험해 보겠다. 12 나는 이스라엘 자손들이 불평하는 소리를 들었다. 그들에게 이렇게 일러라. ‘너희가 저녁 어스름에는 고기를 먹고, 아침에는 양식을 배불리 먹을 것이다. 그러면 너희는 내가 주 너희 하느님임을 알게 될 것이다.’” 13 그날 저녁에 메추라기 떼가 날아와 진영을 덮었다. 그리고 아침에는 진영 둘레에 이슬이 내렸다. 14 이슬이 걷힌 뒤에 보니, 잘기가 땅에 내린 서리처럼 잔 알갱이들이 광야 위에 깔려 있는 것이었다. 15 이것을 보고 이스라엘 자손들은 그것이 무엇인지 몰라, “이게 무엇이냐?” 하고 서로 물었다. 모세가 그들에게 말하였다. “이것은 주님께서 너희에게 먹으라고 주신 양식이다.”

2 The whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, "Would that we had died at the LORD's hand in the land of Egypt, as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread! But you had to lead us into this desert to make the whole community die of famine!" 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will now rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not. 12 "I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them: In the evening twilight you shall eat flesh,and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread, so that you may know that I, the LORD, am your God." 13 In the evening quail came up and covered the camp. In the morning a dew lay all about the camp, 14 and when the dew evaporated, there on the surface of the desert were fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground. 15 On seeing it, the Israelites asked one another, "What is this?" for they did not know what it was. But Moses told them, "This is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat."

해설) 예수 그리스도 안에 참 자유와 진리가 있습니다. 누구든지 그리스도를 믿으면 새사람이 됩니다. 누구든지 그리스도를 만나면 새롭게 변화됩니다. 누구든지 예수 그리스도의 가르침을 행하면 주님의 새사람이 될 것입니다. 예수님으로 인해 새롭게 된 사람은 바르고 거룩한 생활을 합니다.
형제 여러분, 17 나는 주님 안에서 분명하게 말합니다. 여러분은 더 이상 헛된 마음을 가지고 살아가는 다른 민족들처럼 살아가지 마십시오. 20 여러분은 그리스도를 그렇게 배우지 않았습니다. 21 여러분은 예수님 안에 있는 진리대로, 그분에 관하여 듣고 또 가르침을 받았을 줄 압니다. 22 곧 지난날의 생활 방식에 젖어 사람을 속이는 욕망으로 멸망해 가는 옛 인간을 벗어 버리고, 23 여러분의 영과 마음이 새로워져, 24 진리의 의로움과 거룩함 속에서 하느님의 모습에 따라 창조된 새 인간을 입어야 한다는 것입니다.

Brothers and sisters: 17 I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; 20 that is not how you learned Christ, 21 assuming that you have heard of him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus, 22 that you should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and put on the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness of truth.

해설) 예수님께서 보리빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리로 오천 명을 먹이십니다. 그러자 군중은 음식의 풍요로움을 계속 만끽하고자 예수님을 찾아다닙니다. 그러나 인간은 빵으로만 사는 것이 아니라 하느님 말씀으로 사는 것입니다. 말씀이신 예수님께로 나아오는 사람은 결코 배고프지도 않고 결코 목마르지도 않을 것입니다.
그때에 24 군중은 예수님도 계시지 않고 제자들도 없는 것을 알고서, 배들에 나누어 타고 예수님을 찾아 카파르나움으로 갔다. 25 그들은 호수 건너편에서 예수님을 찾아내고, “라삐, 언제 이곳에 오셨습니까?” 하고 물었다. 26 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 나를 찾는 것은 표징을 보았기 때문이 아니라 빵을 배불리 먹었기 때문이다. 27 너희는 썩어 없어질 양식을 얻으려고 힘쓰지 말고, 길이 남아 영원한 생명을 누리게 하는 양식을 얻으려고 힘써라. 그 양식은 사람의 아들이 너희에게 줄 것이다. 하느님 아버지께서 사람의 아들을 인정하셨기 때문이다.” 28 그들이 “하느님의 일을 하려면 저희가 무엇을 해야 합니까?” 하고 묻자, 29 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “하느님의 일은 그분께서 보내신 이를 너희가 믿는 것이다.” 30 그들이 다시 물었다. “그러면 무슨 표징을 일으키시어 저희가 보고 선생님을 믿게 하시겠습니까? 무슨 일을 하시렵니까? 31 ‘그분께서는 하늘에서 그들에게 빵을 내리시어 먹게 하셨다.’는 성경 말씀대로, 우리 조상들은 광야에서 만나를 먹었습니다.” 32 예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 하늘에서 너희에게 빵을 내려 준 이는 모세가 아니다. 하늘에서 너희에게 참된 빵을 내려 주시는 분은 내 아버지시다. 33 하느님의 빵은 하늘에서 내려와 세상에 생명을 주는 빵이다.” 34 그들이 예수님께, “ 선생님, 그 빵을 늘 저희에게 주십시오.” 하자, 35 예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “ 내가 생명의 빵이다. 나에게 오는 사람은 결코 배고프지 않을 것이며, 나를 믿는 사람은 결코 목마르지 않을 것이다.”

What can you do? 31 Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat." 32 So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." 34 So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." 35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst."
예수님은 생명의 빵입니다. 예수님을 믿고 따르는 사람은 배고프지도 목마르지도 않을 것입니다. 지혜로운 사람은 썩어 없어질 양식이 아니라 우리를 영원히 살게 하는 예수님을 찾을 것입니다. 그리하여 예수님으로 인하여 새롭게 된 사람은 새로운 가치관으로 이웃에게 '사랑의 빵'이 되는 삶을 살 것입니다.

+ 요한 6, 24-35
1. 이스라엘 백성에게 빵을 주었던 분은 누구입니까? 군중들이 생각하는 기적의 양식은 무엇입니까? 그들은 예수님께 어떤 것을 요구하였습니까? 나는 어떤 양식을 찾고 있습니까? 나역시 영혼의 양식보다는 썩어 없어질 양식을 찾아 헤메지는 않습니까?
2. "내가 생명의 빵이다. 나에게 오는 사람은 결코 배고프지 않을 것이며, 나를 믿는 사람은 결코 목마르지 않을 것이다."라는 예수님의 말씀은 내게 어떻게 와 닿습니까? 사람의 아들이 주는 영원한 양식은 무엇입니까? 나는 그 양식은 어떻게 얻을 수 있습니까? 언제 어디서 예수님은 내 삶의 '빵'으로 현존하고 계십니까?

The crowds at Galilee seek out Jesus
Our readings today speak about bread coming down from heaven. In our first reading from the Book of Exodus, the Jewish people are travelling through the wilderness away from Egypt and they complain to Moses and Aaron that they have not enough to eat. Moses intercedes before the Lord for the people and the Lord agrees to their request by giving them manna – bread from heaven – to satisfy them.
In the gospel passage from St John we see Jesus telling the people that he is the bread of life. At the end of last Sunday’s gospel passage, we saw the Lord slipping away from the crowd as they wanted to make him a political king. The people have once again followed him and he says that this was because of the food he gave them. However, Jesus exhorts them not to look for the bread he gave the previous day because that bread was temporary and only sustained their physical bodies in the here and now. Instead, he tells them to seek the true bread which comes down from heaven, a bread that gives life to all who receive it so that they may live forever. From our vantage point we know that that bread is the bread of the Eucharist, the Lord’s own Body and Blood, and which is essential for the life of the soul. Belief in Jesus Christ nourished by the Bread of the Eucharist leads to eternal life in the Kingdom, and that is beginning to be revealed in this passage and will develop over the coming passages.
In the second reading, the author exhorts the readers to live a life worthy of their Christian vocation. In our previous passages the Ephesians had been told that they had been chosen by God as his own people and that they all shared the same promises sealed in the blood of Jesus Christ. Now they are called on to live a life which is better than the lives of the pagans around them. Their old way of living must be set aside and they must live the life of a Christian in the truth of God. They must undergo a spiritual revolution and put aside their material desires and, in so doing, they will draw closer to Christ and to the eternal life he has promised to all who believe in him.
Prayer :
"Lord, you alone can satisfy the deepest longing and hunger in our hearts. May I always hunger for the imperishable bread, that I may be satisfied in you alone as the True Bread of Heaven. Nourish and strengthen me that I may serve you with great joy, generosity, and zeal all the days of my life". - Amen.

자세한 전기는 알 수 없으나 성녀 논나는 그리스도인으로서 그레고리우스(Gregorius)란 사람과 결혼했는데, 남편은 카파도키아(Cappadocia)의 나지안주스의 지사였으며 유대인 이교인 그룹의 주요 멤버였다. 그녀는 오로지 자신의 표양만으로 남편을 그리스도인으로 개종시켰을 뿐만 아니라 사제가 되게 하였고, 그 후에는 주교까지 된 나지안주스의 성 그레고리우스(1월 1일)를 후원한 장본인이다. 그녀의 세 아이들 역시 모두 성인이 되었다. 나지안주스의 성 그레고리우스(1월 2일), 나지안주스의 성 카이사리우스(Caesarius, 2월 25일) 그리고 성녀 고르고니아(Gorgonia, 12월 9일)가 그들이다.
