Friday of the First Week of Lent
+ 에제키엘서 18, 21-28
< 내가 정말 기뻐하는 것이 악인의 죽음이겠느냐? 악인이 자기가 걸어온 길을 버리고 돌아서서 사는 것이 아니겠느냐? >
해설) 에제키엘은 학자이며 사제입니다. 예루살렘의 사제 가문에서 태어난 에제키엘은 젊어서부터 예루살렘 성전에서의 사제직 수행에 필요한 교육들을 받습니다. 사제인 에제키엘이 예언자의 소명을 받습니다. 주전 597년 최초의 유배자들과 함께 바빌론에 정착한 이후 그곳에서 예언자의 역할을 수행합니다.
주 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. 21 “악인도 자기가 저지른 모든 죄를 버리고 돌아서서, 나의 모든 규정을 준수하고 공정과 정의를 실천하면, 죽지 않고 반드시 살 것이다. 22 그가 저지른 모든 죄악은 더 이상 기억되지 않고, 자기가 실천한 정의 때문에 살 것이다. 23 내가 정말 기뻐하는 것이 악인의 죽음이겠느냐? 주 하느님의 말이다. 악인이 자기가 걸어온 길을 버리고 돌아서서 사는 것이 아니겠느냐? 24 그러나 의인이 자기 정의를 버리고 돌아서서 불의를 저지르고, 악인이 저지르는 온갖 역겨운 짓을 따라 하면, 살 수 있겠느냐? 그가 실천한 모든 정의는 기억되지 않은 채, 자기가 저지른 배신과 자기가 지은 죄 때문에 죽을 것이다. 25 그런데 너희는, ‘주님의 길은 공평하지 않다.’고 말한다. 이스라엘 집안아, 들어 보아라. 내 길이 공평하지 않다는 말이냐? 오히려 너희의 길이 공평하지 않은 것 아니냐? 26 의인이 자기 정의를 버리고 돌아서서 불의를 저지르면, 그것 때문에 죽을 것이다. 자기가 저지른 불의 때문에 죽는 것이다. 27 그러나 악인이라도 자기가 저지른 죄악을 버리고 돌아서서 공정과 정의를 실천하면, 그는 자기 목숨을 살릴 것이다. 28 자기가 저지른 모든 죄악을 생각하고 그 죄악에서 돌아서면, 그는 죽지 않고 반드시 살 것이다.”

Thus says the Lord GOD: 21 If the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed, if he keeps all my statutes and does what is right and just, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him; he shall live because of the virtue he has practiced. 23 Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? says the Lord GOD. Do I not rather rejoice when he turns from his evil way that he may live? 24 And if the virtuous man turns from the path of virtue to do evil, the same kind of abominable things that the wicked man does, can he do this and still live? None of his virtuous deeds shall be remembered, because he has broken faith and committed sin; because of this, he shall die. 25 You say, "The LORD's way is not fair!" Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? 26 When someone virtuous turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die. 27 But if the wicked, turning from the wickedness he has committed, does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life; 28 since he has turned away from all the sins that he committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
묵상) 바빌론 유배자들은 유배 상황을 선조들이 범한 죄의 결과로 생각합니다. 절망 속에서 삶의 희망을 잃은 유배자들에게 에제키엘은 주님의 말씀을 전합니다. 에제키엘 예언자는 개인의 자유와 책임을 강조하면서 각자의 신앙 생활을 회복할 수 있도록 합니다. 주님께서는 개개인의 삶에 따라 심판하십니다.

< 먼저 형제를 찾아가 화해하여라. >
해설) 예수님께서는 율법적인 사고방식을 넘어 율법의 참뜻을 밝히십니다. '살인하지 말라'는 율법을 심화하여 형제에게 분노하는 것조차 금지하십니다. 사람이 분노하면 그 분노는 입으로 나옵니다. 직접 살인하지 않았기 때문에 율법을 잘 지킨 것이 아니라, 입으로 하는 간접 살인도 하지 말아야 합니다.
그때에 예수님께서 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. 20 “너희의 의로움이 율법 학자들과 바리사이들의 의로움을 능가하지 않으면, 결코 하늘 나라에 들어가지 못할 것이다. 21 ‘살인해서는 안 된다. 살인한 자는 재판에 넘겨진다.’고 옛사람들에게 이르신 말씀을 너희는 들었다. 22 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 자기 형제에게 성을 내는 자는 누구나 재판에 넘겨질 것이다. 그리고 자기 형제에게‘바보!’라고 하는 자는 최고 의회에 넘겨지고, ‘멍청이!’라고 하는 자는 불붙는 지옥에 넘겨질 것이다. 23 그러므로 네가 제단에 예물을 바치려고 하다가, 거기에서 형제가 너에게 원망을 품고 있는 것이 생각나거든, 24 예물을 거기 제단 앞에 놓아두고 물러가 먼저 그 형제와 화해하여라. 그런 다음에 돌아와서 예물을 바쳐라. 25 너를 고소한 자와 함께 법정으로 가는 도중에 얼른 타협하여라. 그러지 않으면 고소한 자가 너를 재판관에게 넘기고 재판관은 너를 형리에게 넘겨, 네가 감옥에 갇힐 것이다. 26 내가 진실로 너에게 말한다. 네가 마지막 한 닢까지 갚기 전에는 결코 거기에서 나오지 못할 것이다.”

Jesus said to his disciples: 20 "I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven. 21 "You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. 22 But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna. 23 Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."
묵상) 형제와 화해하고 나서 하느님께 제사를 드려야 하며 서둘러 화해해야만 투옥을 면할 수 있습니다. 주님의 심판이 다가오고 있으니 서둘러 회개해야 합니다. 주님과 화해하고 이웃과 화해하는 것이 참된 회개입니다. 주님께서는 늘 자비와 사랑을 베푸시는 분이시므로 주님을 등진 사람은 주님께로 돌아서야 합니다.
주님 앞에서는 누구나 죄인입니다. 그러나 사람들끼리는 자기 눈의 들보는 보지 못한 채 다른 사람 눈의 티끌을 탓합니다. 주님은 죄인 하나도 잊지 않고 계시며 죄인 하나도 잃지 않으실 것입니다. 우리가 기도하고 영성수련을 하는 것은 우리 자신을 바로보기 위함입니다. 부족한 우리를 사랑하신다는 것을 깨닫는다면 진정 남을 용서할 수 있을 것입니다.

화해하여라

1. 나는 그리스도인으로서 어떻게 행동해야 합니까? 하느님을 따른다면서도 실제 행동은 정 반대로 하고 있지는 않습니까? 오늘 복음의 화해에 대한 예수님의 말씀은 내게 어떤 의미이고 그것은 내 안에 어떤 감정들을 일으킵니까?
2. 내가 지금 화해해야 할 사람은 누구입니까? 누군가 나에게 원망을 품고 있는 사람은 없습니까? 살면서 고의든 실수든 누군가에게 상처를 주어 아프게 하거나 고통을 준적은 없었습니까? 부모, 형제, 친구, 직장동료, 이웃 등, 내가 만나는 사람들 중에서 내가 마음의 담을 쌓고 사는 사람은 없습니까? 그들과 화해하기 위하여 어떤 노력을 하고 있습니까?

Ezekiel 18:21-28 / Matthew 5:20-26
The readings today remind us of the importance of interior conversion. In the reading from the Prophet Ezekiel we are told that God does not rejoice in the death of a wicked man but rejoices to see that person converted. More distasteful in his sight is a righteous man turning to wicked ways than a wicked man living wickedly.
In the gospel, we are told that our virtue must be more than the mere lip-service of the Pharisees – we must live and act from a deeply held conviction and faith and not just go through external emotions. God sees the inmost heart and judges accordingly. Jesus also reminds us to be reconciled with our family for any wrong we have done to them or they have done to us. Where we fall short on this we must take concrete steps towards conversion.
Prayer :
“May I be no man’s enemy, and may I be the friend of that which is eternal and abides. May I never quarrel with those nearest me: and if I do, may I be reconciled quickly. May I love, seek, and attain only that which is good. May I wish for all men’s happiness and envy none. May I never rejoice in the ill-fortune of one who has wronged me. When I have done or said what is wrong, may I never wait for the rebuke of others, but always rebuke myself until I make amends. May I win no victory that harms either me or my opponent. May I reconcile friends who are angry with one another. May I never fail a friend who is in danger. When visiting those in grief may I be able by gentle and healing words to soften their pain. May I respect myself. May I always keep tame that which rages within me. May I accustom myself to be gentle, and never be angry with people because of circumstances. May I never discuss who is wicked and what wicked things he has done, but know good men and follow in their footsteps.” Amen.

성 도시테우스(또는 도시테오)는 이교도로 자랐기 때문에 그리스도교 교리는 전혀 몰랐으나, 가끔 예루살렘 이야기를 들은 적이 있었기 때문에 그곳을 가보고 싶은 충동을 종종 느꼈다고 한다. 그는 게세마니(Gethsemane)를 비롯하여 예루살렘의 여러 곳을 방문하여 큰 감명을 받았으나, 어떤 낯선 부인을 만나기 전까지는 자기가 본 것을 이해하지 못하였다. 그는 이 부인이 일러 준 대로 가자에 있는 수도원에 입회하였다. 원장은 그의 외모를 보고 처음에는 거절했으나 그의 열성이 지극하여 결국 허락하였다고 한다. 그는 이때 성 도로테우스(Dorotheus)의 지도를 받았다.
그는 수도자의 길을 걸으면서 자기 자신의 의지를 극복하는 일을 목표로 삼고 큰 일이든 작은 일이든 최선을 다하여 높은 성덕을 얻게 되었다. 그는 매일 극히 소량의 빵으로 만족하고 나머지는 가난한 사람들을 돕는 데 사용하였다. 가끔 그는 인내심을 잃어버린 때도 있었지만, 그럴 때면 그는 주님께서 위로해 주실 때까지 땅에 엎디어 눈물을 흘리기도 하였다. 그는 항상 이렇게 말하였다. "기도하는 기회를 놓치지 말라." 또한 그는 여러 성인들의 환시를 보았다. 그때마다 그가 하는 말은 "저를 위하여 기도해 주소서"였다고 한다.
