오늘의 말씀
재의 수요일로 사순시기가 시작됩니다. 참회의 상징으로 재를 머리에 얹는 예식에서 '재의 수요일'이란 명칭이 생겨났으며, 주님 수난 성지 주일에 축성한 나뭇가지를 태운 재를 머리나 이마에 얹습니다. 재는 참회의 상징으로 사용되었습니다. 사제는 오늘부터 회개와 속죄의 상징인 자색 제의를 입습니다. 사순 시기는 참회의 시기이며 부활을 준비하는 희망의 시기입니다. 사순 시기는 회개하며 자비와 은총을 구하는 시기이기에 특별히 '은총의 사순 시기'라 불립니다.

< 너희는 옷이 아니라 너희 마음을 찢어라. >
해설) 회개가 늦어지고 심판이 이미 결정되었다 하더라도 진심으로 뉘우쳐 주님께 돌아오기만 한다면 주님은 그 심판을 멈추실 것입니다. 이제라도 뉘우쳐 주님께 돌아오기만 한다면 재앙을 거두실 것입니다. 재를 뒤집어쓰고 단식하며 가슴을 치고 울어야 합니다. 옷만 찢지 말고 심장을 찢고 주님께로 돌아서야 합니다.
12 주님의 말씀이다. 이제라도 너희는 단식하고 울고 슬퍼하면서 마음을 다하여 나에게 돌아오너라. 13 옷이 아니라 너희 마음을 찢어라. 주 너희 하느님에게 돌아오너라. 그는 너그럽고 자비로운 이, 분노에 더디고 자애가 큰 이 재앙을 내리다가도 후회하는 이다. 14 그가 다시 후회하여 그 뒤에 복을 남겨 줄지 주 너희 하느님에게 바칠 곡식 제물과 제주를 남겨 줄지 누가 아느냐? 15 너희는 시온에서 뿔 나팔을 불어 단식을 선포하고 거룩한 집회를 소집하여라. 16 백성을 모으고 회중을 거룩하게 하여라. 원로들을 불러 모으고 아이들과 젖먹이들까지 모아라. 신랑은 신방에서 나오고 신부도 그 방에서 나오게 하여라. 17 주님을 섬기는 사제들은 성전 현관과 제단 사이에서 울며 아뢰어라. “주님, 당신 백성에게 동정을 베풀어 주십시오. 당신의 소유를 우셋거리로, 민족들에게 이야깃거리로 넘기지 마십시오. 민족들이 서로‘저들의 하느님이 어디 있느냐?’하고 말해서야 어찌 되겠습니까?” 18 주님께서는 당신 땅에 열정을 품으시고 당신 백성을 불쌍히 여기셨다.

< 숨은 일도 보시는 네 아버지께서 너에게 갚아 주실 것이다. >
해설) 참 그리스도인은 사람들에게 드러내 보이기 위해 자선과 기도와 단식을 하지 않습니다. 참 그리스도인은 숨은 일도 보시는 하느님께 보이려고 자선을 베풀고 기도하고 단식을 합니다. 숨은 일도 보시는 하느님께서는 우리의 참된 회개를 원하십니다. 지금이 바로 회개의 때이며 오늘이 그 구원의 날입니다.

And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. 16 "When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. 우리의 자선과 기도와 단식은 숨은 일도 보시는 하느님께 드리는 속죄 제물입니다. 하느님을 등진 채 살아가던 우리가 다시 정신을 차려 하느님께로 돌아가고자 하는 의지입니다. 우리의 잘못을 후회하고 속죄하는 마음을 보시어 주님께서 용서해 주시기를 바랍니다. 하느님의 용서로 우리는 의롭게 되어 하느님과 올바른 관계를 맺게 될 것입니다.

올바른 자선과 단식
+ 마태오 6, 1-6. 16-18
1. 나는 왜 기도합니까? 그리고 나는 기도 속에서 어떤 것들을 청하고 있습니까? 시간이 지나면서 나의 기도가 형식적이거나 가식적으로 변하지는 않았습니까? 나는 하루의 삶에서 얼마만큼의 시간을 주님을 위해 배려하며 기도를 통해 내게 주시려는 말씀에 얼마나 귀 기울입니까?
2. 예수님께서 말씀하시는 참 단식과 자선의 의미는 무엇입니까? 사순시기를 맞으며 비움과 나눔에 대해 묵상해 보십시오. 나의 삶에서 내가 절제 못하는 부분은 어떤 것이 있습니까? 혹시 내가 가지고 있는 것이 너무 많아, 그것에 정신 팔려있느라 정작 중요한 부분을 놓치고 있지는 않습니까? 나는 무엇을 나눌 수 있는지 찾아보십시오.

Joel 2:12-18 / 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2 / Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
Today we enter Lent – the great penitential season of the Church’s year – in preparation for the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the salvation of each of us. The readings today speak about repentance, about fasting, about preparation. We are called to prepare for the glory of the resurrection and our salvation by prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Throughout Lent many people give up various things such as chocolate or sugar, etc., but what we are asked to give up in the readings has far greater impact not just for ourselves but for others, for we are asked to give up sin and hypocrisy.
Our first reading comes from the book of Joel, one of the twelve Minor Prophets and is a book of hope. In today’s passage Joel lists the characteristics of God: ‘tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in graciousness, and ready to relent’. The people are told that if they turn back from their sins then the Lord – who cannot be forced to do anything – might turn back from the punishment they deserve. This turning back and repentance is to be done by everyone, rich and poor alike.
In the second reading, St Paul reminds the Corinthians that they are ambassadors for God and therefore they must be reconciled to him because they cannot be his ambassadors if they live lives contrary to his Law. There is also the reminder that it is always the favourable time for the Lord always listens to his people when they return to him.
In the gospel, we are told that what we do is to be done quietly, humbly and without drawing attention to ourselves for public displays of false piety do not win God’s favour. The great Lenten acts of almsgiving, prayer and fasting are addressed by the Lord and it is clear that all three are required.
Prayer :
"Lord, give me a lively faith, a firm hope, a fervent charity, and a great love for you. Take from me all lukewarmness in the meditation of your word, and dullness in prayer. Give me fervor and delight in thinking of you and your grace, and fill me with compassion for others, especially those in need, that I may respond with generosity” Amen.

오론테스(Orontes) 강 부근 시리아의 한 산에서 고적한 생활을 하던 성 마론은 주로 야외생활을 했다. 그는 꼭 필요할 경우에만 염소 가죽을 덮은 움막에서 지냈는데, 그 움막을 사용하는 일은 거의 없었다. 그는 어느 날 버려진 신전을 하나 발견하자 이를 개조하여 하느님께 봉헌하고 기도의 집으로 가끔 이용하였다. 그를 지극히 존경하던 성 요한 크리소스토무스(Joannes Chrisostomus, 9월 13일)는 그에게 편지를 보내 그로부터 무슨 말을 듣고 싶어 했지만 성공하지 못한 듯하다. 그는 선 채로 기도했는데 나이가 들어서는 지팡이로 자신의 몸을 받치고 기도했다. 그는 말씀을 청하는 사람들에게 극히 짧은 말로 권고하였다. 이런 그에게 하느님은 사람들의 영육을 치유하는 능력을 허락하셨으며, 놀라운 영적 지혜로 사람들을 권면할 수 있게 해주셨다. 레바논 사람들도 성 마론을 큰 성인으로 공경하고 있다. 그는 마로(Maro)로도 불린다.
