The Baptism of the Lord

< 여기에 나의 종이 있다. 그는 내 마음에 드는 이다. >
해설) 주님의 종은 하느님의 영을 받아 뭇 민족에게 바른 인생길을 펼 것입니다. 그는 성실하게 끝까지 바른 인생길만을 펼 것입니다. 주님의 종은 하느님의 정의를 세울 것이며 만국의 빛이 될 것입니다. 그는 소경들의 눈을 열어 주고 감옥에 묶여 있는 이들을 풀어 주고 캄캄한 영창 속에 갇혀 있는 이들을 놓아줄 것입니다.
주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “1 여기에 나의 종이 있다. 그는 내가 붙들어 주는 이, 내가 선택한 이, 내 마음에 드는 이다. 내가 그에게 나의 영을 주었으니 그는 민족들에게 공정을 펴리라. 2 그는 외치지도 않고 목소리를 높이지도 않으며 그 소리가 거리에서 들리게 하지도 않으리라. 3 그는 부러진 갈대를 꺾지 않고 꺼져 가는 심지를 끄지 않으리라. 그는 성실하게 공정을 펴리라. 4 그는 지치지 않고 기가 꺾이는 일 없이 마침내 세상에 공정을 세우리니 섬들도 그의 가르침을 고대하리라. 6 ‘주님인 내가 의로움으로 너를 부르고 네 손을 붙잡아 주었다. 내가 너를 빚어 만들어 백성을 위한 계약이 되고 민족들의 빛이 되게 하였으니 7 보지 못하는 눈을 뜨게 하고 갇힌 이들을 감옥에서, 어둠 속에 앉아 있는 이들을 감방에서 풀어 주기 위함이다.’

Thus says the LORD: 1 Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, 2 not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. 3 a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; 4 the coastlands will wait for his teaching. 6 I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, 7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.
묵상) 주님의 종은 하느님께서 믿고 마음에 들어 뽑아 세운 하느님의 종입니다. 하느님께서는 그를 통해 인류와 새로운 계약을 맺을 것입니다. 그래서 주님의 종은 만국의 빛이 될 것입니다. 주님의 종은 가난한 이들에게 기쁜 소식을 전하고, 포로들에게 해방을 알리고, 눈 먼 이들의 눈을 열어 주고, 억눌린 이들을 풀어 보낼 것입니다.

< 너는 내가 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다. >
해설) 예수님께서 공생활을 시작하시기 전에 요한의 세례를 받으십니다. 요한의 세례는 메시아를 맞아들이기 위한 회개의 세례입니다. 그런데 죄 없으신 예수님께서 요한에게 와서 세례를 받으십니다. 죄 없으신 분이 죄인들과 함께 세례를 받으신 것입니다. 예수님은 본질이 하느님이시지만 죄인을 구원하시기 위하여 죄인들과 함께 세례를 받으십니다.
그때에 요한은 7 이렇게 선포하였다. “나보다 더 큰 능력을 지니신 분이 내 뒤에 오신다. 나는 몸을 굽혀 그분의 신발 끈을 풀어 드릴 자격조차 없다. 8 나는 너희에게 물로 세례를 주었지만, 그분께서는 너희에게 성령으로 세례를 주실 것이다.” 9 그 무렵에 예수님께서 갈릴래아 나자렛에서 오시어, 요르단에서 요한에게 세례를 받으셨다. 10 그리고 물에서 올라오신 예수님께서는 곧 하늘이 갈라지며 성령께서 비둘기처럼 당신께 내려오시는 것을 보셨다. 11 이어 하늘에서 소리가 들려왔다. “너는 내가 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다.”

7 This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: "One mightier than I is coming after me.I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." 9 It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. 11 And a voice came from the heavens, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."
묵상) 예수님께서 세례자 요한에게 세례를 받으심으로써 당신 자신을 낮추십니다. 예수님의 세례 받으심은 자기 낮춤의 표지로 인류가 하느님과 올바른 관계를 갖고 생명을 얻게 하기 위해 당신이 십자가를 지실 것을 예고하신 것입니다. 예수님께서 세례 받으심으로 당신 자신을 낮추시는 겸손과 하느님의 크신 사랑을 보여주십니다.
예수님께서 공생활을 시작하시기 전에 세례를 받으십니다. 세례를 받으실 때 예수님 위로 하느님의 성령이 내려오십니다. 예수님께서는 하느님의 거룩한 영과 하나 되어 사람들에게 하느님의 통치를 밝히십니다. 예수님께서는 당신 말씀으로 하느님 나라를 선포하시고 당신 행적으로 하느님 나라의 위력을 드러내 보이십니다.

세례를 받으시다

1. 요한의 삶은 그리스도를 증언하는 삶이었습니다. 많은 사람들은 그가 메시아가 아닐까? 생각하며 그를 따랐지만 그럼에도 불구하고 요한은 끝까지 자신을 부정하며 예수님이야 말로 메시아로 오신 분임을 알립니다. 나는 나의 삶을 누구를 그리고 무엇을 위해 살고 있습니까?
2. 예수님께서 세례 받고 계신 모습을 떠 올려 보십시오. 성령이 비둘기 모양으로 내려오고 하느님의 음성이 들려왔습니다. “너는 내가 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다.”, 내가 세례 받던 때를 기억해 보십시오. 세례를 받는 나의 모습을 보시며 하느님께서 "내가 사랑하고 마음에 드는 아들딸이다." 라며 기뻐하시지 않았을까요?

The Baptism of the Lord
Mark 1:7-11
Why did Jesus, the Sinless One, submit himself to John’s baptism? John preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 3:3). In this humble submission we see a foreshadowing of the “baptism” of his bloody death upon the cross. Jesus’ baptism is the acceptance and the beginning of his mission as God’s suffering Servant. He allowed himself to be numbered among sinners. Jesus submitted himself entirely to his Father’s will. Out of love he consented to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins. Do you know the joy of trust and submission to God?
The Father proclaimed his entire delight in his Son and spoke audibly for all to hear. The Holy Spirit, too, was present as he anointed Jesus for his ministry which began that day as he rose from the waters of the Jordan river. Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all who come to believe in him. At his baptism the heavens were opened and the waters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, signifying the beginning of a new creation.
How can we enter into the mystery of Jesus’ humble self-abasement and baptism? Gregory of Nazianzus, a seventh century Church father tells us: “Let us be buried with Christ by Baptism to rise with him; let us go down with him to be raised with him; and let us rise with him to be glorified with him." Do you want to see changes in your life? And do you want to become a more effective instrument of the gospel? Examine Jesus’ humility and ask the Holy Spirit to forge this same attitude in your heart. As you do, heaven will open for you as well. The Lord is ever ready to renew us in his Spirit and to anoint us for mission. We are called to be “light” and “salt” to those around us. The Lord wants his love and truth to shine through us that others may see the goodness and truth of God’s message of salvation. Ask the Lord to fill you with his Holy Spirit that you may radiate the joy of the gospel to those around you.
Do you ever fell compelled or driven to do something for God? Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to spend forty days and nights in prayer and fasting in a lonely place. Why was he compelled to seek solitude for such a lengthy period? Was it simply a test to prepare him for his ministry? Or did Satan want to lure him into a trap? The word tempt in English usually means to entice to sin. The scriptural word here means test in the sense of proving and purifying someone to see if there are ready for the task at hand. We test pilots to see that they are fit to fly. Likewise God tests his servants to see if they are fit to be used by him. God tested Abraham to prove his faith. Jesus was no exception to this testing. Satan will try his best to induce us to choose our will over God's will. If he cannot induce us to apostasize or to sin mortally, he will then try to get us to make choices that will lead us away from what God wants for us. Jesus was tempted like us and he overcame not by his own human strength but by the grace and strength which his Father gave to him. He had to renounce his will for the will of his Father. He succeeded because he wanted to please his Father and he trusted that his Father would give him the strength to overcome the obstacles that stood in the way. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit to be our strength and guide and our consoler in temptation and testing. God the Father is ready to give us all that we need to live in his way of love and righteousness. Do you rely on the Lord for your strength and help?
Prayer :
"Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit and inflame my heart with the joy of the gospel. May I find joy in seeking to please you just as you found joy in seeking to please your Father". Amen.
성녀 구둘라 (Saint Gudula)

벨기에 브뤼셀을 찾는 사람들은 성녀 구둘라 대성당을 찾고 있지만, 성녀의 전기는 알려진 것이 거의 없다. 그녀는 비트겔(Witger) 백작과 그의 아내인 모뵈주(Maubeuge)의 성녀 아멜베르가(Amelberga, 7월 10일)의 딸로 니벨레스(Nivelles)의 수도원에서 그녀의 사촌인 성녀 제르트루다(Gertrudis, 3월 17일)로부터 종교적인 생활을 배우며 성장하였다. 성녀 제르트루다가 사망한 후 그녀는 부모의 집이 있는 알로스트(Alost) 근교 함(Hamme)으로 돌아와 함께 지내면서 오로지 이웃을 위한 자선활동과 신심생활에만 전념하였다. 그녀의 집과 모르셀(Moorsel) 성당이 약 3km 정도 떨어져 있었지만 그녀는 매일 아침 성당에 가서 기도하였다.
성녀 구둘라는 사망한 후 고향 마을에 있는 성당 정문 앞에 묻혔다. 그 후 그녀의 유해는 모르셀 성당에 안치되었다가 978년 브뤼셀로 옮겨졌고, 1047년에는 성 미카엘(Michael) 성당에 안치되었다. 그러나 1579년 칼빈주의자들에 의해 그녀의 묘는 파괴되었고 유해 또한 흩어지고 말았다. 그녀의 자매인 성녀 라이넬디스(Reineldis, 7월 16일)는 생트(Saintes)에 살다가 야만족의 침입 때 살해되었다.
