Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion
십자가의 신비
오늘은 주님의 수난 성지 주일이며 이번 주간은 성주간이 시작되는 주간입니다. 오늘 성경 말씀의 주제는 십자가의 신비입니다. 부활로 향한 사순절의 여정이 성주간 안에 압축되어 있습니다. 십자가 앞에서 인간의 죄악과 사악함을 드러나고, 십자가 위에서 하느님의 크신 사랑이 드러납니다. 진정 그리스도의 십자가는 하느님의 신비입니다.
제1독서는 제3이사야 예언서의 말씀으로 주님의 종의 셋째 노래입니다. 고난 받는 주님의 종은 때리는 자에게 등을 맡기고 수염을 뽑는 자에게 턱을 내밉니다. 고난 받는 주님의 종은 고통 중에서도 말하고 들을 수 있으며 또한 다른 이를 위로할 수 있는 여유가 있습니다. 하느님을 신뢰하기 때문에 부끄러울 것이 없는 것입니다. 욕설과 침 뱉음 앞에서 얼굴을 가리지도 않고, 부끄러움 앞에서 얼굴 붉히지도 않습니다. 주님만을 신뢰하고 그래서 주님께서 인정해 주신다는 것을 확신하기 때문에 주님의 종은 조금도 두려워 않고 마음의 안정을 지니고 있습니다. 우리도 그리스도의 십자가 앞에 바로 서면 모든 슬픔과 괴로움, 걱정과 두려움을 넘어 참 평화를 찾을 것입니다.
제2독서는 필리피서 2장의 말씀으로 초대 교회의 그리스도께 대한 신앙 고백이며 그리스도의 영광송입니다. 예수 그리스도는 본질이 하느님과 같은 분이시지만 당신을 낮추시고 낮추셔서 우리와 같은 인간이 되셨습니다. 이렇게 인간으로 나타나셔서도 당신 자신을 더 낮추셨으며 마침내는 십자가에 달려 죽기까지 아버지 하느님께 순종하셨습니다. 그래서 하느님께서는 그분을 높이 올리시고 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 주셨습니다. 예수 그리스도로 인해 모두가 입을 모아 하느님을 찬양하게 되었습니다. 예수님께서 당신을 낮추신 것은 하느님의 뜻에 대한 순명입니다. 우리도 자신을 낮추고 내어주는 그만큼 하느님 구원의 열매를 맺을 것입니다.
오늘 복음은 마태오에 의한 수난 복음입니다. 선한 사람은 선한 말과 선한 행동을 하고, 악한 사람은 악한 말과 악한 행동을 합니다. 사악한 인간들이 예수님을 고발합니다. 예수님께서는 인간의 죄악을 침묵으로 받아들이십니다. 예수님은 말씀 자체이시며 정의 자체이십니다. 인간의 사악함이 진실과 정의를 흐려놓고 불의와 거짓으로 억지를 부릴 때 예수님께서는 침묵으로 그 모든 것을 받아들이십니다. 예수님 침묵의 끝은 십자가입니다. 십자가는 하느님의 사랑과 인간의 죄악이 만나는 곳입니다. 십자가 앞에서 인간은 사악함을 드러나고, 십자가 위에서 하느님께서는 당신의 그 크신 사랑을 드러내십니다. 진정 그리스도의 십자가는 하느님의 지혜이며 하느님의 신비입니다.

해설) 주님의 종은 하느님을 거역하지도 않고 꽁무니를 빼지도 않습니다. 주님의 종은 때리는 자에게 등을 맡기며 수염을 뽑는 자에게 오히려 턱을 내밉니다. 주님의 종은 욕설과 침 뱉음을 받지 않으려고 얼굴을 가리지도 않습니다. 하느님께서 함께하시고 도와주시니 고난 받는 주님의 종은 얼굴 빛 하나 변하지 않을 것입니다.
4 주 하느님께서는 나에게 제자의 혀를 주시어, 지친 이를 말로 격려할 줄 알게 하신다. 그분께서는 아침마다 일깨워 주신다. 내 귀를 일깨워 주시어, 내가 제자들처럼 듣게 하신다. 5 주 하느님께서 내 귀를 열어 주시니, 나는 거역하지도 않고, 뒤로 물러서지도 않았다. 6 나는 매질하는 자들에게 내 등을, 수염을 잡아 뜯는 자들에게 내 뺨을 내맡겼고, 모욕과 수모를 받지 않으려고 내 얼굴을 가리지도 않았다. 7 그러나 주 하느님께서 나를 도와주시니, 나는 수치를 당하지 않는다. 그러기에 나는 내 얼굴을 차돌처럼 만든다. 나는 부끄러운 일을 당하지 않을 것임을 안다.

해설) 그리스도 예수님께서는 본질이 하느님이시지만 당신의 권위를 다 내어 놓으시고 당신 자신을 낮추셔서 우리와 같은 인간이 되셨습니다. 인간의 모습으로 나타나셔서도 당신 자신을 더 낮추셔서 십자가에 달려 죽기까지 아버지의 뜻에 순종하셨습니다. 그래서 하느님께서는 예수님을 높이 올리셔서 온 세상의 주님이 되게 하셨습니다.
그리스도 예수님께서는 6 하느님의 모습을 지니셨지만, 하느님과 같음을 당연한 것으로 여기지 않으시고, 7 오히려 당신 자신을 비우시어 종의 모습을 취하시고 사람들과 같이 되셨습니다. 이렇게 여느 사람처럼 나타나 8 당신 자신을 낮추시어 죽음에 이르기까지, 십자가 죽음에 이르기까지 순종하셨습니다. 9 그러므로 하느님께서도 그분을 드높이 올리시고, 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 그분께 주셨습니다. 10 그리하여 예수님의 이름 앞에 하늘과 땅 위와 땅 아래에 있는 자들이 다 무릎을 꿇고, 11 예수 그리스도는 주님이시라고 모두 고백하며 하느님 아버지께 영광을 드리게 하셨습니다.

해설) 예수 그리스도는 하느님의 참 메시아입니다. 예수님은 고난과 죽임을 당하는 메시아입니다. 예수님은 유다인들이 기대하는 정치적 군주로서의 메시아가 아니라 고난 받는 주님의 종으로서의 메시아입니다. 예수님은 전능하신 분의 오른편에 앉으시고 장차 역사의 종말에 세상을 심판하러 오실 인자와 같은 메시아입니다.

방금 여러분은 하느님을 모독하는 말을 들었습니다. 66 여러분의 의견은 어떻습니까?” ○ 무리가 대답하였다. ⊙ “그자는 죽을죄를 지었습니다.” ○ 67 그때에 무리는 예수님의 얼굴에 침을 뱉고 그분을 주먹으로 쳤다. 더러는 손찌검을 하면서 말하였다. ● 68 “메시아야, 알아맞혀 보아라. 너를 친 사람이 누구냐?”○ 69 베드로는 안뜰 바깥쪽에 앉아 있었는데 하녀 하나가 그에게 다가와 말하였다. ● “당신도 저 갈릴래아 사람 예수와 함께 있었지요?” ○ 70 베드로는 모든 사람 앞에서 이렇게 부인하였다.● “나는 당신이 무슨 말을 하는지 모르겠소.” ○ 71 베드로가 대문께로 나가자 다른 하녀가 그를 보고 거기에 있는 이들에게 말하였다.● “이이는 나자렛 사람 예수와 함께 있었어요.”○ 72 베드로는 맹세까지 하면서 다시 부인하였다.● “나는 그 사람을 알지 못하오.” ○ 73 조금 뒤에 거기 서 있던 이들이 베드로에게 다가와 말하였다.⊙ “당신도 그들과 한패임이 틀림없소. 당신의 말씨를 들으니 분명하오.”○ 74 그때에 베드로는 거짓이면 천벌을 받겠다고 맹세하기 시작하며 말하였다.● “나는 그 사람을 알지 못하오.” ○ 곧 닭이 울었다. 75 베드로는 “닭이 울기 전에 너는 세 번이나 나를 모른다고 할 것이다.” 하신 예수님의 말씀이 생각나서, 밖으로 나가 슬피 울었다. 27, 1 아침이 되자 모든 수석 사제들과 백성의 원로들은 예수님을 사형에 처하기로 결의한 끝에, 2 그를 결박하여 끌고 가서 빌라도 총독에게 넘겼다. 3 그때에 예수님을 팔아넘긴 유다는 그분께서 사형 선고를 받으신 것을 보고 뉘우치고서는, 그 은돈 서른 닢을 수석 사제들과 원로들에게 돌려주면서 4 말하였다. ● “죄 없는 분을 팔아넘겨 죽게 만들었으니 나는 죄를 지었소.” ○ 수석 사제와 원로들은 말하였다. ⊙ “우리와 무슨 상관이냐? 그것은 네 일이다.”○ 5 유다는 그 은돈을 성전 안에다 내던지고 물러가서 목을 매달아 죽었다. 6 수석 사제들은 그 은돈을 거두면서 말하였다. ⊙ “이것은 피 값이니 성전 금고에 넣어서는 안 되겠소.”○ 7 수석 사제들은 의논한 끝에 그 돈으로 옹기장이 밭을 사서 이방인들의 묘지로 쓰기로 하였다. 8 그래서 그 밭은 오늘날까지 ‘피밭’이라고 불린다. 9 그리하여 예레미야 예언자를 통하여 하신 말씀이 이루어졌다. “그들은 은돈 서른 닢, 값어치가 매겨진 이의 몸값, 이스라엘 자손들이 값어치를 매긴 사람의 몸값을 받아, 10 주님께서 나에게 분부하신 대로 옹기장이 밭 값으로 내놓았다.”> 11 예수님께서 총독 앞에 서셨다. 총독이 물었다. ● “당신이 유다인들의 임금이오?” ○ 예수님께서 대답하셨다.+ “네가 그렇게 말하고 있다.” ○ 12 그러나 수석 사제들과 원로들이 당신을 고소하는 말에는 아무 대답도 하지 않으셨다. 13 그때에 빌라도가 예수님께 물었다. ● “저들이 갖가지로 당신에게 불리한 증언을 하는데 들리지 않소?”○ 14 예수님께서는 어떠한 고소의 말에도 대답을 하지 않으셨다. 그래서 총독은 매우 이상하게 여겼다. 15 축제 때마다 군중이 원하는 죄수 하나를 총독이 풀어 주는 관례가 있었다. 16 마침 그때에 예수 바라빠라는 이름난 죄수가 있었다. 17 사람들이 모여들자 빌라도가 그들에게 물었다.● “내가 누구를 풀어 주기를 원하오? 예수 바라빠요 아니면 메시아라고 하는 예수요?” ○ 18 빌라도는 사람들이 예수님을 시기하여 자기에게 넘겼음을 알고 있었던 것이다. 19 빌라도가 재판석에 앉아 있는데 그의 아내가 사람을 보내어 말하였다.● “당신은 그 의인의 일에 관여하지 마세요. 지난밤 꿈에 내가 그 사람 때문에 큰 괴로움을 당했어요.” ○ 20 그동안 수석 사제들과 원로들은 군중을 구슬려 바라빠를 풀어 주도록 요청하고 예수님은 없애 버리자고 하였다. 21 총독이 물었다.● “두 사람 가운데에서 누구를 풀어 주기를 바라는 것이오?” ○ 군중이 대답하였다. ◎ “바라빠요.” ○ 22 빌라도가 그들에게 물었다. ● “그러면 메시아라고 하는 이 예수는 어떻게 하라는 말이오?” ○ 군중이 모두 외쳤다. ◎ “십자가에 못 박으시오!” ○ 23 빌라도가 다시 물었다.● “도대체 그가 무슨 나쁜 짓을 하였다는 말이오?” ○ 군중은 더욱 큰 소리로 외쳤다. ◎ “십자가에 못 박으시오!” ○ 24 빌라도는 더 이상 어찌할 수가 없을 뿐만 아니라 오히려 폭동이 일어나려는 것을 보고, 물을 받아 군중 앞에서 손을 씻으며 말하였다.● “나는 이 사람의 피에 책임이 없소. 이것은 여러분의 일이오.” ○ 25 온 백성이 대답하였다. ◎ “그 사람의 피에 대한 책임은 우리와 우리 자손들이 질 것이오.”○ 26 빌라도는 바라빠를 풀어 주고 예수님을 채찍질하게 한 다음 십자가에 못 박으라고 넘겨주었다. 27 그때에 총독의 군사들이 예수님을 총독 관저로 데리고 가서 그분 둘레에 온 부대를 집합시킨 다음, 28 그분의 옷을 벗기고 진홍색 외투를 입혔다. 29 그리고 가시나무로 관을 엮어 그분 머리에 씌우고 오른손에 갈대를 들리고서는, 그분 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 이렇게 말하며 조롱하였다. ⊙ “유다인들의 임금님, 만세!” ○ 30 군사들은 또 예수님께 침을 뱉고 갈대를 빼앗아 그분의 머리를 때렸다. 31 그렇게 예수님을 조롱하고 나서 외투를 벗기고 그분의 겉옷을 입혔다. 그리고 예수님을 십자가에 못 박으러 끌고 나갔다. 32 그들은 나가다가 시몬이라는 키레네 사람을 보고 강제로 예수님의 십자가를 지게 하였다. 33 이윽고 골고타 곧 ‘해골 터’라는 곳에 이르렀다. 34 그들이 쓸개즙을 섞은 포도주를 예수님께 마시라고 건넸지만, 그분께서는 맛을 보시고서는 마시려고 하지 않으셨다. 35 그들은 예수님을 십자가에 못 박고 나서 제비를 뽑아 그분의 겉옷을 나누어 가진 다음, 36 거기에 앉아 예수님을 지켰다. 37 그들은 또 그분의 머리 위에 죄명을 붙여 놓았다. 거기에는 ‘이자는 유다인들의 임금 예수다.’라고 쓰여 있었다. 38 그때에 강도 두 사람도 예수님과 함께 십자가에 못 박혔는데, 하나는 오른쪽에 하나는 왼쪽에 못 박혔다. 39 지나가던 자들이 머리를 흔들어 대며 예수님을 모독하면서 40 이렇게 말하였다.⊙ “성전을 허물고 사흘 안에 다시 짓겠다는 자야, 너 자신이나 구해 보아라. 네가 하느님의 아들이라면 십자가에서 내려와 보아라.” ○ 41 수석 사제들도 이런 식으로 율법 학자들과 원로들과 함께 조롱하며 말하였다. ⊙ 42 “다른 이들은 구원하였으면서 자신은 구원하지 못하는군. 이스라엘의 임금님이시면 지금 십자가에서 내려와 보시지. 그러면 우리가 믿을 터인데. 43 하느님을 신뢰한다고 하니, 하느님께서 저자가 마음에 드시면 지금 구해 내 보시라지. ‘나는 하느님의 아들이다.’ 하였으니 말이야.” ○ 44 예수님과 함께 십자가에 못 박힌 강도들도 마찬가지로 그분께 비아냥거렸다. 45 낮 열두 시부터 어둠이 온 땅에 덮여 오후 세 시까지 계속되었다. 46 오후 세 시쯤에 예수님께서 큰 소리로 부르짖으셨다.+ “엘리 엘리 레마 사박타니?” ○ 이는 “저의 하느님, 저의 하느님, 어찌하여 저를 버리셨습니까?”라는 뜻이다. 47 그곳에 서 있던 자들 가운데 몇이 이 말씀을 듣고 말하였다. ⊙ “이자가 엘리야를 부르네.” ○ 48 그러자 그들 가운데 한 사람이 곧 달려가서 해면을 가져와 신 포도주에 듬뿍 적신 다음, 갈대에 꽂아 예수님께 마시게 하였다. 49 그러나 다른 사람들은 말하였다. ⊙ “가만, 엘리야가 와서 그를 구해 주나 봅시다.” ○ 50 예수님께서는 다시 큰 소리로 외치시고 나서 숨을 거두셨다.<무릎을 꿇고 잠시 묵상> ○ 51 그러자 성전 휘장이 위에서 아래까지 두 갈래로 찢어졌다. 땅이 흔들리고 바위들이 갈라졌다. 52 무덤이 열리고 잠자던 많은 성도들의 몸이 되살아났다. 53 예수님께서 다시 살아나신 다음, 그들은 무덤에서 나와 거룩한 도성에 들어가 많은 이들에게 나타났다. 54 백인대장과 또 그와 함께 예수님을 지키던 이들이 지진과 다른 여러 가지 일들을 보고 몹시 두려워하며 말하였다. ⊙ “참으로 이분은 하느님의 아드님이셨다.” ○ <55 거기에는 많은 여자들이 멀리서 지켜보고 있었는데, 그들은 갈릴래아에서부터 예수님을 따르며 시중들던 이들이다. 56 그들 가운데에는 마리아 막달레나, 야고보와 요셉의 어머니 마리아, 제베대오 아들들의 어머니도 있었다. 57 저녁때가 되자 아리마태아 출신의 부유한 사람으로서 요셉이라는 이가 왔는데, 그도 예수님의 제자였다. 58 이 사람이 빌라도에게 가서 예수님의 시신을 내 달라고 청하자, 빌라도가 내주라고 명령하였다. 59 요셉은 시신을 받아 깨끗한 아마포로 감싼 다음, 60 바위를 깎아 만든 자기의 새 무덤에 모시고 나서, 무덤 입구에 큰 돌을 굴려 막아 놓고 갔다. 61 거기 무덤 맞은쪽에는 마리아 막달레나와 다른 마리아가 앉아 있었다. 62 이튿날 곧 준비일 다음 날에 수석 사제들과 바리사이들이 함께 빌라도에게 가서 63 말하였다.⊙ “나리, 저 사기꾼이 살아 있을 때, ‘나는 사흘 만에 되살아날 것이다.’ 하고 말한 것을 저희는 기억합니다. 64 그러니 셋째 날까지 무덤을 지키도록 명령하십시오. 그의 제자들이 와서 시체를 훔쳐 내고서는, ‘그분은 죽은 이들 가운데에서 되살아나셨다.’ 하고 말할지도 모릅니다. 그러면 이 마지막 기만이 처음 것보다 더 해로울 것입니다.” ○ 65 빌라도가 대답하였다. ● “당신들에게 경비병들이 있지 않소. 가서 재주껏 지키시오.” ○ 66 수석 사제와 바리사이들은 가서 그 돌을 봉인하고 경비병들을 세워 무덤을 지키게 하였다.>.

The Betrayal by Judas.
14 Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver, 16 and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.
Preparations for the Passover.
17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The teacher says, “My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.”’” 19 The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover.
The Betrayer.
20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” 23 He said in reply, “He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. 24 The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
The Lord’s Supper.
25 Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” He answered, “You have said so.” 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.” 30 Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Peter’s Denial Foretold.
31 Then Jesus said to them, “This night all of you will have your faith in me shaken, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be dispersed’; 32 but after I have been raised up, I shall go before you to Galilee.” 33 Peter said to him in reply, “Though all may have their faith in you shaken, mine will never be.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.”35 Peter said to him, “Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you.” And all the disciples spoke likewise.
The Agony in the Garden.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me.” 39 He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, “My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!” 43 Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open. 44 He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again. 45 Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. 46 Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand.”
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus.
47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd, with swords and clubs, who had come from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 His betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying, “The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him.” 49 Immediately he went over to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and he kissed him. 50 Jesus answered him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then stepping forward they laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. 51 And behold, one of those who accompanied Jesus put his hand to his sword, drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled which say that it must come to pass in this way?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me. 56 But all this has come to pass that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin.
57 Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 Peter was following him at a distance as far as the high priest’s courtyard, and going inside he sat down with the servants to see the outcome. 59 The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, 60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61who stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild it.’” 62 The high priest rose and addressed him, “Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?” 63 But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him in reply, “You have said so. But I tell you: From now on you will see ‘the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power’and ‘coming on the clouds of heaven.’” 65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need have we of witnesses? You have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what is your opinion?” They said in reply, “He deserves to die!” 67 Then they spat in his face and struck him, while some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy for us, Messiah: who is it that struck you?”
Peter’s Denial of Jesus.
69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. One of the maids came over to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it in front of everyone, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about!” 71 As he went out to the gate, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazorean.” 72 Again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man!” 73 A little later the bystanders came over and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; even your speech gives you away.” 74 At that he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately a cock crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: “Before the cock crows you will deny me three times.” He went out and began to weep bitterly.
Jesus Before Pilate.
1 When it was morning,a all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. 2 They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.
The Death of Judas.
3 Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, deeply regretted what he had done. He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned in betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? Look to it yourself.” 5 Flinging the money into the temple, he departed and went off and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests gathered up the money, but said, “It is not lawful to deposit this in the temple treasury, for it is the price of blood.” 7 After consultation, they used it to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why that field even today is called the Field of Blood. 9 Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of a man with a price on his head, a price set by some of the Israelites, 10 and they paid it out for the potter’s field just as the Lord had commanded me.”
Jesus Questioned by Pilate.
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and he questioned him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You say so.” 12 And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he made no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?” 14 But he did not answer him one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
The Sentence of Death.
15 Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished. 16 And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, “Which one do you want me to release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus called Messiah?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over. 19 While he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him.” 20 The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus. 21 The governor said to them in reply, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They answered, “Barabbas!” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 But he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” They only shouted the louder, “Let him be crucified!” 24 When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. Look to it yourselves.” 25 And the whole people said in reply, “His blood be upon us and upon our children.” 26 Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified.
Mockery by the Soldiers.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around him. 28 They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him. 29 Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 They spat upon him and took the reed and kept striking him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him off to crucify him.
The Way of the Cross.
32 As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross.
The Crucifixion.
33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull), 34 they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall. But when he had tasted it, he refused to drink. 35 After they had crucified him, they divided his garments by casting lots; 36 then they sat down and kept watch over him there. 37 And they placed over his head the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. 38 Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left. 39 Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, if you are the Son of God, [and] come down from the cross!” 41 Likewise the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him and said, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. So he is the king of Israel! Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now if he wants him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 The revolutionaries who were crucified with him also kept abusing him in the same way.
The Death of Jesus.
45 From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 46 And about three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 Some of the bystanders who heard it said, “This one is calling for Elijah.” 48 Immediately one of them ran to get a sponge; he soaked it in wine, and putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink. 49 But the rest said, “Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save him.” 50 But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. 51 And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split, 52 tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they said, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” 55 There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
The Burial of Jesus.
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who was himself a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be handed over. 59 Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it [in] clean linen 60 and laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the tomb and departed. 61 But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained sitting there, facing the tomb. The Guard at the Tomb. 62 The next day, the one following the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that this impostor while still alive said, ‘After three days I will be raised up.’ 64 Give orders, then, that the grave be secured until the third day, lest his disciples come and steal him and say to the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead.’ This last imposture would be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “The guard is yours; go secure it as best you can.” 66 So they went and secured the tomb by fixing a seal to the stone and setting the guard.
호산나를 외치며 환호하던 백성의 외침이 십자가에 못 박으라는 아우성으로 바뀝니다. 인간의 죄악을 받아들이시고 십자가에 오르신 예수님께서는 십자가 위에서 아버지의 참 사랑을 보이십니다. 예수 그리스도께서는 성체성사 안에서 당신의 몸과 피까지 우리에게 내어 주시면서 온 세상에 하느님의 사랑을 드러내 보이십니다.

유다의 배신과 십자가에 못박혀 죽으시다

1. 예수님께서 인간이 되어 오셔서 십자가 길을 걸으시고 고통과 죽음을 견디어 내신 이유는 우리를 너무나 사랑하신 아버지의 사랑 때문이었습니다. 오늘 긴 복음을 읽고 묵상하면서 하느님의 사랑과 나의 삶의 이유를 비교 묵상해 보십시오. 나는 살면서 사랑 때문에 다른 사람을 대신하여 고통 받고 어렵고 힘든 길을 택한 적이 있습니까?
2. 유다는 예수님을 사랑하지 않았기에 예수님을 배신하였습니다. 그는 그의 이상 속에 있는 메시아와 현실의 메시아의 어떤 다른 모습을 찾았을까요? 예수님과 긴 시간을 함께 했으면서도 그가 놓친 것은 무엇이며 그의 마음속에 무엇이 들어갔습니까? 나는 살면서 나의 욕심이나 이기 때문에 사랑하는 사람을 배신하진 않았습니까? 그때 무엇이 나의 마음을 움직였습니까?
성녀 카실다(Saint Casilda)

성녀 카실다는 에스파냐 톨레도에서 무어인 부모에게 태어났다. 그녀의 아버지는 예수 그리스도와 관계된 것은 모두 증오하는 사람이었다. 성녀 카실다는 비밀리에 그리스도인 포로들을 방문하고 먹을 것을 가져다주다가 발각되자 아버지의 진노를 피해 부르고스(Burgos)의 브리비에스카(Briviesca)로 가서 세례를 받고 그리스도인이 되어 병고와 공포 속에서도 기쁨을 간직한 은수자로 살다가 선종하였다.
교회미술에서 성녀 카실다는 장미꽃을 나르는 사라센족의 처녀로 묘사되고 있다. 때때로 그녀는 장미를 든 사라센족의 공주로서 또는 헝가리의 엘리사벳(Elisabeth, 11월 17일)이나 포르투갈의 엘리사벳(7월 4일)처럼 빵이 장미꽃으로 변하는 모습으로 표현된다. 그녀는 지금도 사라고사(Zaragoza), 톨레도, 부르고스에서 특별한 공경을 받고 있다.
