복되신 동정 마리아의 배필 성 요셉
예수님께서는 성령으로 잉태되었으나, 아버지 성 요셉을 통하여 법적으로 다윗의 후손이 되고 메시아로 불릴 수 있게 됩니다. 성 요셉은 의로운 사람이고 동정녀 마리아의 남편으로 충실하고 현명한 가장입니다. 성 요셉은 성가정의 수호자요 아버지로서 예수님을 지키신 분입니다. 1970년 비오 9세는 성 요셉을 보편 교회의 수호자로 선언하고, 비오 12세는 노동자 성 요셉의 축일을 공포하며, 레오 13세는 가정의 모범으로 선포하고 성인 가운데 성모님 다음의 위치에 높입니다. 마리아가 교회의 어머니이듯이 마리아와 예수님의 보호자이신 성 요셉 역시 가톨릭교회 전체의 주보성인입니다.

해설) 사울은 주님의 뜻에 순종하지 않았기에 배척되어 주님의 뜻을 어긴 군주가 되고 반면에 다윗은 주님의 뜻을 충실히 따른 왕이 됩니다. 주님의 뜻에 충실한 그 보상으로 다윗의 왕조는 영구히 계속되는 축복을 받습니다. 다윗이 주님의 성전을 세우고자 하나 오히려 주님께서 다윗의 왕조를 세우십니다.

해설) 아브라함은 하느님을 온전히 신뢰합니다. 하느님께서는 당신을 믿는 아브라함의 그 믿음을 보시고 아브라함을 올바른 사람으로 인정하십니다. 이제 하느님의 능력이 예수 그리스도의 수난과 죽음과 부활 안에 드러납니다. 하느님께서는 그리스도를 믿는 그 믿음을 보시고 우리를 올바른 사람으로 인정하실 것입니다.

해설) 이스라엘에서는 부인이 간음하면 돌을 던져 죽입니다. 착한 남편의 경우에는 남편이 이혼장을 써서 부인에게 건네줌으로써 부인을 소박하며, 이것이 합법적인 이혼 절차입니다. 그러나 요셉은 공적인 이혼 절차를 포기하고 남모르게 마리아를 소박하기고 마음먹습니다. 마리아의 일을 세상에 드러내지 않으려고 한 것입니다.

요셉의 영성은 사순시기를 지내는 그리스도인이 추구해야 하는 영성입니다. 요셉은 믿음과 순종과 침묵과 인내와 성실과 온유의 성품을 지니고 있습니다. 그래서 다윗의 후손으로써 천주의 모친이신 성모 마리아의 배필로 주님께 선택됩니다. 우리도 요셉 성인과 같은 마음으로 예수님과 성모님을 사랑하고 섬길 수 있는 은총을 청합니다.

예수 그리스도의 탄생

1. 자신이 계획이 하느님의 개입으로 모두 틀어지고, 인간의 눈으로 볼 때 손해 보는 삶처럼 보일 수 있었지만, 성 요셉은 하느님의 뜻을 위해 순명함으로서 하느님의 구원사업을 완성하는 중요한 역할을 담당하고 큰 의인으로 거듭나게 됩니다. 그는 무엇을 보고 어떤 믿음을 갖고 있었기에 하느님의 뜻을 위해 모든 것을 내려놓았습니까? 하느님의 구원 역사 안에서 그가 맡은 한 부분은 어떤 것입니까? 그는 어떻게 그것을 완수합니까?
2. 나의 삶과 성 요셉의 삶에는 어떤 차이가 있다고 생각합니까? 나도 하느님의 뜻에 맞춰 살려고 노력하지만 때로 세속적 유혹과 손해 보는 느낌이 들어 힘들어 하거나 포기하고 싶었던 적은 없었습니까? 하느님의 뜻을 따르기에 내가 치를 대가가 너무 크다고 계산한 적은 없습니까? 현재 하느님을 위해 겪는 모든 어려움과 고통을 당신께서는 기억하셨다가, 몇 곱절의 큰 은총과 축복으로 다시 돌려주실 것임을 믿습니까?

How Jesus' birth came about
Little is known about Joseph except that he was of the line of David which was essential in order for Jesus to be legally of the house and line of David in fulfilment of the Scriptures. What is more important for us is the example which Joseph left us. He was a man of faith who played his role in God’s salvific plan for us; he was obedient to the will of God; he had a love for the Law and its fulfilment; he showed piety and fortitude in times of trial; he had a chaste love for the Blessed Virgin Mary and he exercised his paternal authority with due care. He is therefore a true example of Christian living and is the Protector of the Church. Joseph is also the patron of carpenters and manual workers.
In the first reading from the Prophet Samuel, we see God telling David that his throne will stand secure forever through one of his line. David’s line and sovereignty were created by the Lord and he guarantees its security.
The passage from the letter to the Romans recalls Abraham – the first servant of the true God – and reminds us that he was justified not because of any law but because of his faith. St Paul reassures us that we are the spiritual children of Abraham and that we must have faith and belief like him. From Abraham comes both the Jewish faith and King David and to both belong St Joseph.
The gospel from St Matthew recounts the narrative of the vision Joseph had which told him to take Mary as his wife though she was already pregnant. In this way Jesus was born of the line of David and everything that God had promised to David and to Abraham was fulfilled. As Joseph trusted in the Lord, so we are called to that same trust and belief. The key element for us is that Joseph was a man of faith just as Mary was a woman of faith. Both had annunciations and both accepted what must have been quite troubling but they did so without hesitation. In this way they ensured the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament while giving the child a strong faith-based family unit in which to grow up.
In the alternative gospel passage from St Luke we have the story of the finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple after he had been missing for three days. Mary says that both she and Joseph had been worried about him which shows that Joseph has taken his duties as husband and father seriously and is a true protector to Mother and Child. It is also clear that Jesus was dutiful towards his ‘earthly’ father and was obedient to Joseph. We have essentially nothing recorded of what Joseph every said and yet the image we have in the scriptures is of a man of deep faith and trust.

예수님의 양아버지 성 요셉(Josephus)에 관한 내용은 마태오 복음 1-2장, 루가 복음 1-2장의 예수 탄생 기사에서 발견되는 것이 성서상의 근거이다. 이에 따르면 요셉은 다윗(David) 왕가의 후손이고, 요셉 가문은 유대아의 베들레헴에서 왔으나 갈릴래아의 나자렛으로 이사하여 목수 일을 하고 있었고, 이미 의인으로 존경받고 있었다.
그는 마리아와 약혼하였으나 ‘성령으로 말미암아’ 아기를 가진 마리아와 파혼하지 말라는 천사의 말을 듣고 천사가 명한대로 마리아를 아내로 맞아들였다. 그는 마리아와 함께 아기 예수께 조배하러 온 동방박사의 방문을 받았고, 헤로데의 영아 학살을 피하기 위하여 가족을 이끌고 이집트로 피신하였다. 헤로데가 죽은 후에야 가족들은 나자렛으로 돌아와서 살았다. 그와 마리아는 아기에게 할례를 베풀었고, 주님을 예루살렘 성전에 봉헌하였다. 예수가 12세였을 때 그는 마리아와 예수와 함께 명절을 지내러 예루살렘을 다녀오다가 예수를 잃어버린 것을 알고 다시 돌아가서 예루살렘 성전에서 학자들과 이야기하는 아들을 찾기도 하였다.
이때부터 성 요셉은 루가 복음 4장 22절을 제외하고는 신약성서에서 언급되지 않는다. 성 요셉은 아마도 그리스도의 수난과 죽음 이전에 운명한 듯 여겨진다. 외경인 “야고보의 원복음서”에는 그가 마리아와 결혼하였을 때 이미 노인이었다고 말하기도 한다. 성 요셉에 대한 공경은 동방 교회에서부터 시작되었는데, "요셉 이야기"라는 외경은 4세기부터 7세기까지 대중들로부터 사랑받는 인기 있는 책이었다. 서방 교회에서는 아일랜드 사람인 웬거스 펠리르란 분이 9세기에 성 요셉 축일을 '기념'했다는 언급이 있으나 15세기까지는 요셉 공경이 확산되지 않다가, 1479년 교황 식스투스 4세(Sixtus IV)가 로마(Roma)에 요셉 신심을 도입한 이후 널리 전파되었다.
성 요셉 신심은 특히 아빌라(Avila)의 성녀 테레사(Teresia, 10월 15일)와 성 프란치스코 드 살(Francis de Sales, 1월 24일)에 의하여 보편화되었고, 1870년에 교황 비오 9세(Pius IX)가 요셉을 ‘교회의 수호성인’으로 선포하였으며, 교황 레오 13세(Leo XIII)는 요셉을 가장의 모범으로 선포하면서 성인들 가운데서 성모님 다음의 위치로 올리셨다. ‘노동자의 수호자’란 칭호는 교황 베네딕투스 15세(Benedictus XV)가 부여하였고, 교황 비오 11세(Pius XI)는 ‘사회정의의 수호자’로, 또 비오 12세는 1955년 공산주의자들의 노동절에 대응해서 5월 1일을 ‘노동자 성 요셉 기념일’로 제정 선포하였다. 성 요셉은 한국 교회의 수호성인이다.
