The Nativity of the Lord - Christmas
오늘 너희를 위하여 구원자가 태어나셨다.
오늘은 주님 성탄 대축일입니다. 오늘 오늘 성경 말씀의 주제는 구원의 기쁜 소식입니다. 어둠 속에 있는 하느님 백성이 거룩한 빛을 봅니다. 하느님께서 우리를 구원하러 오십니다. 하느님께서 우리와 함께 계시기 위해서 임마누엘 주님으로 오십니다. 우리의 하느님은 우리의 기쁨이요 희망이며 진정 우리의 구원입니다.
제1독서는 이사야 예언서의 말씀입니다. 어둠 속을 찾아 헤매는 하느님 백성이 큰 빛을 봅니다. 캄캄한 땅에 사는 하느님 백성에게 주님의 빛이 비쳐옵니다. 하느님께서 당신 백성을 구원하러 오십니다. 메시아께서는 당신 백성이 짊어진 멍에와 어깨에 멘 장대를 부러뜨리시고 혹사하는 자들의 채찍을 꺾으실 것입니다. 백성을 짓밟던 군화와 군복은 불에 타 사라질 것입니다. 그분의 어깨에 하느님의 주권이 메어질 것입니다. 그분은 탁월한 경륜가, 용사이신 하느님, 영원한 아버지, 평화의 왕이라 불릴 것입니다. 그분은 다윗의 왕좌에 앉아 하느님의 주권을 행사하고 온 세상에 하느님의 법과 정의를 굳게 세우실 것이며 끝없는 평화를 영원까지 이루실 것입니다.
제2독서는 티도서의 말씀입니다. 우리 구세주 하느님께서 당신 사랑으로 우리를 구원하십니다. 우리가 무슨 옳은 일을 했다고 해서 우리를 구원해 주시는 것이 아니라 오직 그분이 자비하신 분이시기 때문에 당신 성령으로 우리를 깨끗이 씻어서 다시 나게 하시고 새롭게 해 주심으로써 우리를 구원하십니다. 하느님 구원의 은총이 모든 사람에게 나타납니다. 그 은총은 불경건한 생활과 세속적 욕심을 버리게 하고 이 세상에서 바르고 거룩한 삶을 살게 합니다. 그 은총은 하느님과 그리스도께서 영광스럽게 나타나실 그 복된 희망을 기다리게 합니다. 주님의 은총은 구원의 기쁜 소식을 마음속에 늘 간직하고 진정 그리스도를 따르는 삶을 살게 합니다.
오늘 복음은 루카 복음입니다. 천지가 창조되기 전부터 말씀이 있으셨습니다. 말씀은 하느님과 함께 계셨고 하느님과 같은 분입니다. 때가 되어 말씀이 사람이 되십니다. 말씀이 사람이 되셔서 우리와 함께 계십니다. 우리와 함께 계시는 말씀이신 하느님은 임마누엘 주님입니다. 임마누엘 주님은 당신 백성과 함께 하시려고 오십니다. 그래서 그분은 하루 밤만 묵고 가는 여관방에서 태어나실 수 없습니다. 그분은 당신 백성을 구원하러 오시기 때문에 가장 낮은 곳으로 오셔서 마구간에서 태어나십니다. 하느님을 섬기는 그 섬김으로 당신 백성을 섬기기 위해 자신을 낮추신 것입니다. 하느님께서 우리를 구원하러 인간으로 오셨다는 것이 기쁜 소식입니다.
+ 이사야서 9, 1-6
< 우리에게 한 아들이 주어졌습니다.>
해설) 다윗 가문의 한 아기에 의해 참된 해방과 평화와 정의가 이루어질 것입니다. 그것은 죽음의 어둠 속에서 오랫동안 애타게 기다려온 사람에게 쏟아지는 큰 빛과 같은 것입니다. 그 아기는 세상을 비추고 억압의 멍에를 부수는 용사이신 주님이며 우리에게 살아갈 희망과 용기를 주시는 분입니다.
1 어둠 속을 걷던 백성이 큰 빛을 봅니다. 암흑의 땅에 사는 이들에게 빛이 비칩니다. 2 당신께서는 즐거움을 많게 하시고, 기쁨을 크게 하십니다. 사람들이 당신 앞에서 기뻐합니다, 수확할 때 기뻐하듯, 전리품을 나눌 때 즐거워하듯. 3 정녕 당신께서는 그들이 짊어진 멍에와, 어깨에 멘 장대와, 부역 감독관의 몽둥이를, 미디안을 치신 그날처럼 부수십니다. 4 땅을 흔들며 저벅거리는 군화도, 피 속에 뒹군 군복도, 모조리 화염에 싸여 불꽃의 먹이가 됩니다. 5 우리에게 한 아기가 태어났고, 우리에게 한 아들이 주어졌습니다. 왕권이 그의 어깨에 놓이고, 그의 이름은 놀라운 경륜가, 용맹한 하느님, 영원한 아버지, 평화의 군왕이라 불리리이다. 6 다윗의 왕좌와 그의 왕국 위에 놓인 그 왕권은 강대하고, 그 평화는 끝이 없으리이다. 그는 이제부터 영원까지 공정과 정의로 그 왕국을 굳게 세우고 지켜 가리이다. 만군의 주님의 열정이 이를 이루시리이다.

1 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. 2 You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. 3 For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. 4 For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames. 5 For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. 6 His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David's throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!

< 모든 사람에게 하느님의 은총이 나타났습니다. >
해설) 주님 구원의 은총이 모든 사람에게 나타납니다. 그 은총은 우리의 불경건한 생활을 버리게 하고 세속적 욕심을 버리게 하여 이 세상에서 바르고 경건하게 살아가게 합니다. 주님의 은총은 그리스도께서 영광스럽게 나타나실 그 복된 희망을 기다리게 하고 구원의 기쁜 소식을 마음속에 늘 간직하고 그리스도를 따르는 삶을 살게 합니다.
사랑하는 그대여, 11 모든 사람에게 구원을 가져다주는 하느님의 은총이 나타났습니다. 12 이 은총이 우리를 교육하여, 불경함과 속된 욕망을 버리고 현세에서 신중하고 의롭고 경건하게 살도록 해 줍니다. 13 복된 희망이 이루어지기를, 우리의 위대하신 하느님이시며 구원자이신 예수 그리스도의 영광이 나타나기를 기다리는 우리를 그렇게 살도록 해 줍니다. 14 그리스도께서는 우리를 위하여 당신 자신을 내어 주시어, 우리를 모든 불의에서 해방하시고 또 깨끗하게 하시어, 선행에 열성을 기울이는 당신 소유의 백성이 되게 하셨습니다.

Beloved: 11 The grace of God has appeared, saving all 12 and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, 13 as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good.

< 오늘 너희를 위하여 구원자가 태어나셨다.>
해설) 천사가 목동들에게 선포한 메시지는 기쁨과 승리의 메시지였습니다. 기쁜 소식은 목동들만을 위한 것이 아니라 온 세상 모든 사람들이 누리게 될 기쁜 소식인 것입니다. 구원의 기쁜 소식의 내용은 오늘 구세주께서 탄생하셨다는 것입니다. 구세주를 알아보는 표지는 한 갓난아기가 포대기에 싸여 구유에 누워 있는 모습입니다.
1 그 무렵 아우구스투스 황제에게서 칙령이 내려, 온 세상이 호적 등록을 하게 되었다. 2 이 첫 번째 호적 등록은 퀴리니우스가 시리아 총독으로 있을 때에 실시되었다. 3 그래서 모두 호적 등록을 하러 저마다 자기 본향으로 갔다. 4 요셉도 갈릴래아 지방 나자렛 고을을 떠나 유다 지방, 베들레헴이라고 불리는 다윗 고을로 올라갔다. 그가 다윗 집안의 자손이었기 때문이다. 5 그는 자기와 약혼한 마리아와 함께 호적 등록을 하러 갔는데, 마리아는 임신 중이었다. 6 그들이 거기에 머무르는 동안 마리아는 해산 날이 되어, 7 첫아들을 낳았다. 그들은 아기를 포대기에 싸서 구유에 뉘었다. 여관에는 그들이 들어갈 자리가 없었던 것이다. 8 그 고장에는 들에 살면서 밤에도 양 떼를 지키는 목자들이 있었다. 9 그런데 주님의 천사가 다가오고 주님의 영광이 그 목자들의 둘레를 비추었다. 그들은 몹시 두려워하였다. 10 그러자 천사가 그들에게 말하였다. “두려워하지 마라. 보라, 나는 온 백성에게 큰 기쁨이 될 소식을 너희에게 전한다. 11 오늘 너희를 위하여 다윗 고을에서 구원자가 태어나셨으니, 주 그리스도이시다. 12 너희는 포대기에 싸여 구유에 누워 있는 아기를 보게 될 터인데, 그것이 너희를 위한 표징이다.” 13 그때에 갑자기 그 천사 곁에 수많은 하늘의 군대가 나타나 하느님을 이렇게 찬미하였다. 14 “지극히 높은 곳에서는 하느님께 영광, 땅에서는 그분 마음에 드는 사람들에게 평화!”

1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. 2 This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5 to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. 9 The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. 10 The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." 13 And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: 14 "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."
아기 예수님께서 기쁜 소식으로 세상에 오십니다. 밤새워 어둠 속에서 양 떼를 지키던 목동들에게 가장 먼저 모습을 드러내십니다. 빛은 어둠 속에서 제 빛을 발합니다. 마음과 육신이 가난하고 소외되었기에 주님만 의지하는 사람들에게 아기 예수님은 기쁨과 행복과 자유와 평화가 되어 주실 것입니다.

+ 루카 2:1-14
1. 주님께서 오셨습니다. 영광스러운 모습이 아닌 작고 초라한 모습으로 구유에 오셨습니다. 우리를 너무나 사랑한 나머지 죄에서 우리를 구하시겠다고 우리와 같은 모습으로 비천한 인간의 모습으로 오셨습니다. 오늘 예수님의 강생은 어떤 의미이며 우리에게 어떤 희망을 주고있습니까?
2. 목동들이 목격한 놀라운 광경은 무엇입니까? 어둠을 밝히는 불빛, 하늘의 군대와 천사들의 찬양, 그 영광과 찬양 속에서 천사들은 목동들에게 어떤 소식을 전하고 있습니까?

+ 이사야서 62, 11-12
< 보라, 너의 구원이 다가온다.>
해설) 이제 우리를 구원하실 분이 오십니다. 우리를 구원하실 분께서 오시는 그 길을 닦아야 합니다. 큰길을 닦고 걸림돌과 장애물을 치우고 뭇 백성들 앞에 깃발을 올려야 합니다. 우리를 구원하실 분이 곧 오시기 때문입니다. 그분은 승리의 보람으로 당신 백성을 앞세우고 오실 것입니다. 그 백성은 거룩한 백성이라 불릴 것입니다.
11 보라, 주님께서 땅끝까지 선포하셨다. 딸 시온에게 말하여라. “보라, 너의 구원이 다가온다. 보라, 그분의 상급이 그분과 함께 오고 그분의 보상이 그분 앞에 서서 온다.” 12 사람들이 그들을 ‘거룩한 백성’, ‘주님의 구원을 받은 이들’이라 부르리라. 그리고 너는 ‘그리워 찾는 도성’, ‘버림받지 않은 도성’이라 불리리라.

< 하느님께서는 당신 자비에 따라 우리를 구원해 주셨습니다. >
해설) 하느님께서는 당신의 성령으로 우리를 깨끗하게 하시고 다시 나게 하셨으며 새롭게 해 주심으로써 우리를 구원하셨습니다. 하느님께서는 그리스도를 통해서 당신의 성령을 우리에게 풍성하게 부어 주셨습니다. 그래서 우리는 그 은총으로 하느님과 올바른 관계를 갖게 되었고 하느님의 상속자가 되어 영원한 생명을 바랄 수 있게 된 것입니다.
사랑하는 그대여, 4 우리 구원자이신 하느님의 호의와 인간애가 드러난 그때, 5 하느님께서 우리를 구원해 주셨습니다. 우리가 한 의로운 일 때문이 아니라 당신 자비에 따라, 성령을 통하여 거듭나고 새로워지도록 물로 씻어 구원하신 것입니다. 6 이 성령을 하느님께서는 우리 구원자이신 예수 그리스도를 통하여 우리에게 풍성히 부어 주셨습니다. 7 그리하여 우리는 그분의 은총으로 의롭게 되어, 영원한 생명의 희망에 따라 상속자가 되었습니다.

해설) 하느님께서는 가난한 목동들을 선택하여 구세주 탄생에 관한 소식을 전하게 하셨습니다. 하느님께서는 목동들을 메시아의 목격 증인으로 삼으시고 기쁜 소식을 선포하는데 합당하게 하셨습니다. 모든 사람이 다 구세주 탄생의 목격 증인이 되지 않았습니다. 하느님께서 미리 선택한 사람들만이 그 증인이 된 것입니다.
15 천사들이 하늘로 떠나가자 목자들은 서로 말하였다. “베들레헴으로 가서 주님께서 우리에게 알려 주신 그 일, 그곳에서 일어난 일을 봅시다.” 16 그리고 서둘러 가서, 마리아와 요셉과 구유에 누운 아기를 찾아냈다. 17 목자들은 아기를 보고 나서, 그 아기에 관하여 들은 말을 알려 주었다. 18 그것을 들은 이들은 모두 목자들이 자기들에게 전한 말에 놀라워하였다. 19 그러나 마리아는 이 모든 일을 마음속에 간직하고 곰곰이 되새겼다. 20 목자들은 천사가 자기들에게 말한 대로 듣고 본 모든 것에 대하여 하느님을 찬양하고 찬미하며 돌아갔다.

15 When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." 16 So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. 18 All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. 19 And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.
밤새 양떼를 지키던 목자들에게 주님의 천사가 기쁜 소식을 전하였습니다. 제일 먼저 주님의 탄생 소식을 들은 목자들은 베들레헴으로 가서 구유에 누운 예수님을 직접 눈으로 보았습니다. 성령의 이끄심과 우리의 응답이 만나는 곳에 구원이 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 성모님처럼 우리도 이 모든 일을 가슴 속에 간직해야겠습니다.

오늘의 말씀
세상이 창조되기 전부터 말씀이 계셨습니다. 말씀은 하느님과 함께 계셨고 하느님과 같은 분이셨습니다. 모든 것이 말씀을 통해 생겨났고 이 말씀 없이 생겨난 것은 하나도 없었습니다. 생겨난 모든 것이 그에게서 생명을 얻었으며 그 생명은 사람들의 빛이었습니다. 말씀이 곧 참 빛이었습니다. 그 빛이 이 세상에 와서 모든 사람을 비추었습니다. 말씀이 사람이 되신 것입니다. 오늘 이 세상에 그 빛이 오신 것입니다. 거룩한 날이 밝았습니다. 구세주께서 탄생하셨습니다. 온 세상이 고요히 잠들어 있을 때 말씀이 사람이 되시어 우리 가운데 오셨습니다. 이 아기는 우리에게 참된 기쁨을 가져다 줄 평화의 왕이십니다. 구유에 누워 계신 아기 예수님께 모든 백성은 와서 경배 드려야 합니다.

< 땅끝들이 모두 우리 하느님의 구원을 보리라.>
해설) 하느님께서 당신의 구원을 드러내 보이시고 그 정의를 만백성들 앞에서 밝히실 것입니다. 우리 하느님의 구원하심을 모두가 우러러볼 것입니다. 하느님께서 당신 백성을 위로하시고 하느님의 도성 예루살렘을 다시 찾으실 것입니다. 하느님께서 만민 앞에서 당신의 팔을 걷어붙이시니 온 세상이 이제 하느님의 승리를 볼 것입니다.
7 얼마나 아름다운가, 산 위에 서서 기쁜 소식을 전하는 이의 저 발! 평화를 선포하고 기쁜 소식을 전하며 구원을 선포하는구나. “너의 하느님은 임금님이시다.” 하고 시온에게 말하는구나. 8 들어 보아라. 너의 파수꾼들이 목소리를 높인다. 다 함께 환성을 올린다. 주님께서 시온으로 돌아오심을 그들은 직접 눈으로 본다. 9 예루살렘의 폐허들아, 다 함께 기뻐하며 환성을 올려라. 주님께서 당신 백성을 위로하시고 예루살렘을 구원하셨다. 10 주님께서 모든 민족들이 보는 앞에서 당신의 거룩한 팔을 걷어붙이시니 땅끝들이 모두 우리 하느님의 구원을 보리라.

7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings, announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, and saying to Zion, "Your God is King!" 8 Hark! Your sentinels raise a cry, together they shout for joy, for they see directly, before their eyes, the LORD restoring Zion. 9 Break out together in song, O ruins of Jerusalem! 해설) 하느님께서는 당신 아들을 통해서 온 세상을 창조하셨으며 당신 아들에게 세상 만물을 물려주시기로 하셨습니다. 하느님의 아들은 하느님의 영광을 드러내는 찬란한 빛이시고, 하느님의 본질을 그대로 간직하신 분이시며, 그의 능력의 말씀으로 만물을 보존하시는 분이십니다. 그분은 인간의 죄를 깨끗이 씻어 주시는 분이십니다.
1 하느님께서 예전에는 예언자들을 통하여 여러 번에 걸쳐 여러 가지 방식으로 조상들에게 말씀하셨지만, 2 이 마지막 때에는 아드님을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하셨습니다. 하느님께서는 아드님을 만물의 상속자로 삼으셨을 뿐만 아니라, 그분을 통하여 온 세상을 만들기까지 하셨습니다. 3 아드님은 하느님 영광의 광채이시며 하느님 본질의 모상으로서, 만물을 당신의 강력한 말씀으로 지탱하십니다. 그분께서 죄를 깨끗이 없애신 다음, 하늘 높은 곳에 계신 존엄하신 분의 오른쪽에 앉으셨습니다. 4 그분께서는 천사들보다 뛰어난 이름을 상속받으시어, 그만큼 그들보다 위대하게 되셨습니다. 5 하느님께서 천사들 가운데 그 누구에게 “너는 내 아들. 내가 오늘 너를 낳았노라.” 하고 말씀하신 적이 있습니까? 또 “나는 그의 아버지가 되고 그는 나의 아들이 되리라.” 하고 말씀하신 적이 있습니까? 6 또 맏아드님을 저세상에 데리고 들어가실 때에는 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “하느님의 천사들은 모두 그에게 경배하여라.”

When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say: You are my son; this day I have begotten you? Or again: I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me? 6 And again, when he leads the firstborn into the world, he says: Let all the angels of God worship him.

< 말씀이 사람이 되시어 우리 가운데 사셨다.>
해설) 천지가 창조되기 전부터 말씀이 계셨으며 그 말씀은 하느님과 본질이 같은 분이셨습니다. 모든 것이 말씀을 통해 생겨났습니다. 생겨난 모든 것이 그에게서 생명을 얻었으며 그 생명은 사람들의 빛이었습니다. 말씀이 곧 참 빛이었습니다. 그 빛이 이 세상에 와서 모든 사람을 비추었습니다. 그 말씀이 사람이 되신 것입니다.

하느님의 말씀이 사람이 되시어 세상에 오셨으니 그분이 예수 그리스도이십니다. 온 세상은 이미 하느님의 말씀으로 만들어졌으니 모든 것은 그분을 통하여 생겨난 것입니다. 사람도 말씀으로 하느님을 닮은 모습으로 지어내셨습니다. 우리를 위하여 만드신 이 세상에서 우리는 늘 하느님을 찬미하며 살아야 할 것입니다.

The Birth of Jesus Christ
Our first reading from Isaiah is a hymn of thanksgiving for the birth of a particular but very important child. This child would be king and would free the people from the yoke, the bar and the rod of those who oppress them. He would be called Wonder-Counselor because he would have no need of anyone’s advice, unlike those kings who listened to the wrong advice which brought about the downfall of Israel. His rule would be like that of a loving father and this quality would bring about a peace without end. He would destroy war and oppression while assuming all authority.
In the second reading, the author of the letter to Titus wrote that the grace of God had now been revealed and had taken flesh in Jesus Christ. This was not simply confined to the Chosen People but was now available to all people because God had now granted his grace to everyone. The author also reminded Titus that they were waiting for the second coming of Christ and, until that happens, he should have no ambition other than to do good while teaching the people.
Our gospel passage from St Luke tells of the lowly birth of Jesus at Bethlehem. Luke names the Roman Emperor of the day who had brought peace and stability to the empire and says that this census was of the whole world, all of which serves to highlight that while the emperor was called Augustus, it was in fact this child who was Lord of Creation and who would bring about true peace. The shepherds, because of their proximity to the stable, were the first to hear the glad tidings and again the angel began with the greeting ‘Do not be afraid’ because the good news about Jesus Christ and the Good News he preached dispel all fear and bring about peace. We too are called on to hear these same glad tidings afresh and to believe in and worship our Savior not just for these few days every year but right throughout the year and throughout our lives.

God, with the birth of your Son, your glory breaks on the world. As we celebrate his first coming, give us a foretaste of the joy that you will grant us when the fullness of his glory has filled the earth." -Amen

He was named Jesus
Isaiah tells us in the first reading this morning that our Savior comes – he has been born for us. The text was written at the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles and speaks about the joys of the feast. The titles given at the end were descriptive titles for the redeemed Zion, the redeemed city of Jerusalem, which would be a place that all peoples would become part of.
In the second reading, the author of the letter to Titus wrote that that the Savior came to redeem and free the people from their slavery to sin for no other reason than the fact that the Lord had compassion for all his people. Despite all that the people had done and continued to do the Lord was compassionate and sought to save them. The people themselves could do nothing to make themselves righteous: only the freely-given grace of God through Jesus Christ could make the people righteous.
In the gospel passage from St Luke we see that the shepherds have listened to the message of the angels and hurried to the stable to find the child. When they arrived there, they repeated everything they had been told before going away again and giving praise and glory to God. As at the annunciation, we are told that Mary ‘treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart’, which is something which we too should do today: we should take some time to reflect on the meaning which this birth has for us and for our salvation. With the shepherds we too are called to worship ever anew the Savior who has been born for us and who still seeks to enter our hearts.

The Eternal Word becomes flesh
Our first reading for today comes from the book of the prophet Isaiah and is one of jubilation because the people were about to be redeemed. The time of exile and the great troubles the people had labored under because of their sins were now being removed by the Lord and he himself was coming to redeem them. The ruined city of Jerusalem was to be the focal point and there the watchmen on the ruined walls would see the king approaching and rouse the people to give praise and thanks. Salvation was dawning for the people and all the ends of the earth would see this.
Our second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews is a post-resurrection text in which the author says that God had spoken to his people in times past through various prophets and in diverse other ways. But now he has spoken to the people through his own Son who existed before all time and who was present at the creation of the world. This Son has now destroyed the power of sin and death and, for his sacrifice, has been exalted at God’s right hand in heaven.
In the gospel passage, we read the prologue of St John’s Gospel in which he speaks of Jesus Christ as the Word of God, a Word which has been with God since the beginning, a Word which was God. He reminds us that this Word was in the world from the very beginning, but the world did not recognize it and ultimately rejected it. Those who recognize it and accept it are the ones who would be saved. We too will be saved if we truly accept that the Child who is born to us today is the Son of God and has not only the desire but the power to save us. The text is broken by the passage on John the Baptist, but this reminds us that the Word entered into our world after someone had prepared the way. We are reminded that we should be today’s messengers and so bring this message of salvation to all peoples, in this way helping to secure our own salvation.

"Almighty God and Father of light, your eternal Word leaped down from heaven in the silent watches of the night. Open our hearts to receive his life and increase our vision with the rising of dawn, that our lives may be filled with his glory and his peace.” - Amen

판노니아(Pannonia) 시르미움(오늘날 유고슬라비아의 미트로비카) 태생으로 알려진 성녀 아나스타시아는 디오클레티아누스 황제의 박해 때 감옥에 갇힌 신자들을 만나기 위해 아퀼레이아(Aquileia)에서 시르미움으로 갔다가 붙잡혀 같은 해 12월 25일 팔마리아(Palmaria) 섬에서 참수당했고, 유해는 훗날 성당으로 바뀐 아폴로니아(Apollonia)의 집에 안장되었다.
전설적인 자료에 의하면 그녀는 로마 귀족 프레텍사투스(Praetexatus)의 딸로서 이방인이던 푸빌리우스(Pubilius)와 결혼하였다. 남편이 죽자 그녀는 페르시아로 선교여행을 떠나 아퀼레이아까지 갔다가 디오클레티아누스 황제의 박해로 그녀 역시 체포되었다. 그녀는 배에 실려서 팔마리아 섬으로 끌려갔는데, 그 배에는 죄수들이 가득하여 괴롭힘을 당하다가 성녀 테오도타(Theodota)의 도움으로 기적적으로 구출되기도 하였다. 그녀는 5세기부터 로마(Roma)에서 공경을 받고 있으나 그녀에 관한 이야기들은 근거가 희박하다.
